Book Scanning Made Simple
Book Scanning Made Simple

uncovered: A nice look at a book scanning machine.
A technician lays the book onto a special cradle inside
the machine and air jets gently fluff up pages on the right side. A
robotic arm swings over the book and sucks up one page with a special
vacuum, and pulls the page over. Two more robotic arms then swing over
and flatten out the pages with clear plastic clamps.
I love this idea. When I was a kid, I lived in the public library.
I just loved the idea that so much knowledge was contained in the
books around me. I have a subscription to O'Reilly's Safari, and I love
that so many books are available to me, on demand.
The words "archives" and "library" give me goosebumps. This
article almost got me teary-eyed, thinking about its implications.
I have professional fantasies of becoming a librarian.
All my hopes and dreams for the Internet are riding on machines
like this. I want every printed word in the history of Mankind
available instantly. Is that too much to ask? I have a huge smile on
my face right now, just thinking about it.

You Can't Spell RFID without "If"
You Can't Spell RFID without "If"
11/03/2003 02:35 PMRadio frequency identification tags are coming, but are they friend,
foe, or just too expensive?: WalMart's mandate of RFID tags on
products entering their maelstrom will push the adoption of the
technology, but some of the futurists' visions of milk carton's
reporting in to their home base when they're empty seem like a
combination of The Jetsons and 1984. RFID tags are also way too
expensive for this vision of the future -- whether AT&T "You Will"
utopic or Brave New World dystopic. The cost has to come way down to
make them useful for individual products and shelves. Right now, the
palette level is the right price point. (Intrepid staffer Nancy
Gohring filed the story for The Seattle Times; Nancy is on vacation
this week.)...

Book Publishers Selling Direct - Pissing
Off Book Retailers
02/13/2004 05:52 AMOne of the struggles that companies have as distribution and sales
mechanisms change is handling legacy channel conflict issues. Dell
became huge by selling direct to customers, but when rival Compaq
started to move in that direction, their retail partners freaked out -
and Compaq had to scale back their plans. It appears that book
publishers are now going through the same process. They've realized
that if someone is looking for info about certain books on their site,
it makes sense to also offer them a chance to buy it. However, it's
pissing off retailers, who don't
want to hear that their suppliers are competing with them. Retailers
say a reasonable compromise would be having the publishers point to
the retailers, which was my first response as well. However, then it
becomes a political situation of who do you link to and why? There's
also the fact that this makes for a less enjoyable consumer
experience. I know that, more than once, I've been annoyed at online
sites where I go for info on buying a product, but when I try to buy
am given a big list of retailers instead of a way to buy right away.
