Hydro-Foam: Flying R/C Boat
Hydro-Foam: Flying R/C Boat
06/24/2005 04:00 PM
Although the inventor seems a little stressed out ("Please do
not email me") he's made a pretty fantastic thing, so we're going to
cut him some slack. The 'Hydro-Foam' R/C vehicles are currently
prototypes, powered by a brushless motor and lithium-polymer
batteries. What makes them so special is their ability to travel not
only on the water, but through the air, and on the ground at serious
speeds. And this isn't a 'park it and swap some parts thing.' The
videos show the Hydro-Foams moving from water to air to ground and
back again with just a flick of the flaps.
They definitely look easy to destroy—creator Michael
Connally's website makes it clear that this is "not a beginner
airplane"—but they will be available for purchase sometime in
the future (sooner if you'd just leave Connally in peace). (Thanks,
Spinelli!)

Non-Lethal Slippery Foam, an
Anti-Traction Material for the ages
07/28/2004 05:48 AMThe Mobility Denial System is an oil-slick-in-a-can, a combination of
"Drilling Mud Additive, Flocculent and water" that renders surfaces as
slippery as wet ice. Lots of tasty acronyms and buzzwords on the sell
page, including "Anti-Traction Material (ATM)" and "Non-Lethal
Slippery Foam."
Once applied, the material will degrade or impair the adversary's
ability to move. For Interior applications it can be applied to flat,
smooth, non-porous surfaces such as linoleum, tile, wood floors or
staircases. Exterior applications include sloped, rough, porous
surfaces such as concrete, asphalt, and grassy areas.

Cool blog about the designs
baristas
can make in the foamy milk that sits on top of your caffe latte. My
favorite coffee hang in Los Angeles is
Urth (even though I can
never get a table), in part because their coffee is dark, sweet,
earthy, and delicious -- and in part because the guys who make it draw
little hearts and zigzags in the foam.

Latte art, part two
Latte art, part two
04/25/2004 07:22 PMFollowing up on
this
earlier Boingboing post, an anonymous reader points us to this
cool news article about a guy in Australia who one-ups all those sucka
baristas makin' hearts and zigzags in the caffe lattes.
"When you pour the milk in and the cream hits, it's just like a blank
canvas on which to paint," the 36-year old said. Mr Phillips and
fiancee Bernadette Farrugia started Flavors of Lakhoum in Swan St five
years ago and he dabbled with the idea while pouring coffee.
"Sometimes you see swirls and patterns when you're pouring the coffee
in, and one day I was pouring it and I saw an eye appear," he said.
"From there I just drew in a mouth and ears. I've been slowly
practising since then, but have got pretty good in the last few months
- every month I find ways to add more detail."

Espresso/Cappuccino/Latte Machine
04/12/2005 07:44 AM
Gizmodo is powered more by
coffee than any other (non-Class 2) narcotic, so we have a vested
interest in any gadgets that can bring a better cup to our lips each
morning. Enter the Delonghi Magnifica: Simply pour some fresh coffee
beans into the machine, add your water and your milk and press the
button and you're off to the espresso, cappuccino or latté
races. It has a sleek, austere design and will make a welcome addition
to any kitchen counter. It's available for $900, but with this level
of convenience and versatility, some may find it a worthwhile
investment indeed.

Photos shot before, during and after the war
from a collaborative weblog maintained by members of a family in
Baghdad. American tanks roaming the streets, Mom (Faiza) at work
behind her computer, old brick buildings, a 'net cafe, spring flowers
in the front yard, a stack of sweet watermelons at the market ("it's
the best fruit in the hot summer, we call it Raggi.")

Portraits of iconoclastic Japanese street fashionistas. I really like
the punk bride images (like the one at left from Meiji Jingu subway,
2001) because they remind me so much of Mexican-American gangbanger
girls' street style here in Southern California. Instead of rhinestone
tears, imagine black inkdrops on a young
chola's cheeks.

Voyeuristic vintage snapshots of
Disneyland

Disneyland is one of the most-photographed piecces of real-estate in
the world. Since 1955, visitors to the park have been exhaustively
documenting it with photos and slides. Now, the Disnephiles of The
Imaginary World have assembled a "virtual tour" made up of scans of
slides shot at Disneyland in the 1950s and 1960s. This combines the
thrill of fanboy history with the voyeurism of going through family
photo albums found at thrift shops, and just about made my day.

MirBSD 20050330 (Snapshots branch)
MirBSD 20050330 (Snapshots branch)
04/19/2005 09:12 AM
MirOS originated as a patch set against OpenBSD-current, a
4.4BSD-derived ultra secure operating system. It features bugfixes,
code removal for the sake of simplicity, and feature enhancements over
stock OpenBSD. MirOS works on Intel Pentium machines with more than 32
MiB RAM. A version for SPARC exists, and a port to Apple PPC is in
preparation.
Changes:
This snapshot is the first after the transition to
the new CVS repository. GCC, Binutils, MirLibtool,
and Lynx have been updated to current versions.
XFree86 was updated to 4.5.0. The build system has
been improved, and everything is built under
systrace now. Many bugs were fixed, but C++ is
still broken.
