Better UI for big screens

"Our user interface designs do not scale well to the available screen real estate. Windows are hard to access on very large or heterogeneous displays, like Tablets and non-touch-enabled devices. Notifications come up where one is not attending, and windows open in unexpected places or are improperly sized for their contents." -- Microsoft Research VIBE, Visualization and Interaction for Business and Entertainment

The Microsoft team presents a number of ideas for dealing with complexity across large screens. I like the idea of Drag-and-Pop which might help navigate even not so big. yet cluttered desktops like mine.

More on 15" Powerbook screens... 11/12/2003 01:19 PM

This is probably well known by now, but according to a friend of mine who is still trying to work out whether to get the 12" or 15" Apple Powerbook, he's been advised by a man he talked to at a London Apple Centre that a 15" variety will take longer to be delivered because Apple have accepted there's a problem with the screen getting brighter spots on it. Apparently they've definitely ceased production while they look into it. This is probably extremely good news for those of us who have a Powerbook with this problem, and it might explain why I have still not received my return voucher, over a week and a half after I rang them up. I'll be checking up on this later, but I thought I should probably share the news. If anyone has more information on the subject, please feel free to add links in the comments.

Now We Need Two Screens To Play Games?

Now We Need Two Screens To Play Games? 01/22/2004 03:08 AM
Lots of folks talking about Nintendo's latest efforts to stay ahead of the quickly approaching competition for handheld video game players. Since all those others are trying to take the basic success of the Nintendo Gameboy and build on that, Nintendo apparently decided to rethink the whole concept and go in a different direction. Therefore, they've decided to create a gaming device that includes dual screens. We had reported back in November the rumor that Nintendo was working on a secret new product that wasn't an update to the Gameboy or to the GameCube - and apparently this is it (and, it's not, as we had thought it might be, their "iQue" in-between device). Of course, if you're going to come out with a completely new, funky device, it certainly would help to offer a picture - which they didn't. The idea is interesting, but will require an entirely thought process in creating games. Nintendo says the dual screens can be use to show two different perspectives during the game, or perhaps one screen could show a map and the other could be the in-game perspective. It certainly opens up some possibilities, but in the gaming business, the question is always about what software titles you have, and making it trickier to develop software titles could slow that process down. From the sound of things though, I think Nintendo is kidding themselves if they think this device won't take away from Gameboy sales. How many portable gaming devices do you really need? Also, there's no word on whether or not this device will include any wireless capabilities, which seems to be what many competitors are banking on.

Users take a picture of whatever lies directly behind their displays, crop them accordingly, set the picture as their new wallpaper, and take a picture of the whole set up. Ultimately a lot of time spent on something that only works if you don't move the computer at all, it's a novel little visual trick nonetheless (and not Photoshopped, either.) If nothing else, it might give you some inspiration for fun desktop wallpapers of your own. Or you could use someone else's and pretend to be on another desk altogether.

Although there isn't a whole lot in this AP article about new displays at he Society for Information Display trade show that regular Gizmodo readers probably haven't seen before, this picture of Polymer Vision's Rollable Display is pretty great, not because of its picture quality, but because of the promise of rollable displays in the future. The article also mentions a 3D monitor from SeeReal Technologies (picture inset) that features two built-in cameras that track eye movement, adjusting the output of the 3D so that it projects properly no matter what the angle of the viewer.

JVC Big Screen EXE Rear Projection TVs

JVC Big Screen EXE Rear Projection TVs 04/07/2005 12:44 PM

jvc_exe.gif imageJVC will introduce a few new rear projection TVs for the Japanese market, under the "Big Screen EXE" brand. The 61" "HD-61MD60" will cost 787,500 yen, and the 51" 682,500 yen. They do appear to have some nice specs, such as a 700cd/m2 brightness on the 52 inch. But they're being marketed based on a low power consumption: 198W, not that we Americans really care. Speaking of Americans, JVC plans to introduce these two sets here in July, as well as add a 70" model.

Canon to Start Making Rear Projection
TVs in 2005
01/04/2005 01:23 PM
Japanese camera and office equipment maker Canon Inc. said on Tuesday it would start producing rear projection televisions later this year, aiming to secure a chunk of the rapidly growing market for big screen TVs. Canon also said it plans to invest in a liquid crystal display (LCD) panel joint venture by Hitachi Ltd., Toshiba Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd.

It added, however, that details of the planned investment, including the size of the stake, have yet to be decided and it had no plan to make LCD televisions. "We are aiming to offer rear projection TVs on a commercial basis by the end of the year. Since they are to be used at schools and other public facilities, we don't expect them to sell as well as consumer goods," a Canon spokesman said. The rear projection TVs would be the second flat-panel TVs for Canon, which also plans to launch surface conduction electron emitter display (SED) TVs this year.

Sony's Black is Beautiful Projection
Screen
06/18/2004 09:28 AM

So I saw this yesterday, then spent way too much time trying to track down a picture without subscribing to the Wall Street Journal (I steal my neighbor's copy), but it's too interesting not to mention. Apparently, Sony is showing off a new projector screen that is black (instead of the normal white or gray) that looks incredible even in high ambient light situations. What they've done is add a filter to the screen that only reflects red, green, and blue, ignoring (shunning!) white and yellow light from incandescent or fluorescent bulbs, and perhaps even that cursed floating hydrogen bulb, our sun. So that's great and all, but can we get a pic? Without paying $70, I mean?

I swear, once the Journal went to color they sold out all their indie cred.

sony_high_contrast.jpg imageHere's another shot of that Sony Hi-Contrast black front projection screen from CEDIA (it's the one producing the gorgeous colors on the left). While it may not replace white and gray screens for all applications, in situations with a lot of ambient light, this could really open up the market even more for front projection.

They aren't going to come cheap, though. Rumor pricing has it pegged at around $2,000 for an 80"-100" model, with chatter about a next summer release. That's just the screen we're talking about, not a projector to go with it.

Verbatim to To Intro Dual Layer DVD+R Discs : The folks in the MPAA can't be too happy about this one. DVD copying programs are everywhere but unless you get fancy with video compression, your standard Hollywood flick wouldn't fit on a DVD+R, until now.

Verbatim has announced that "it is on schedule to deliver industry's first Double-Layer DVD+R (DVD+R DL) discs". The first 8.5 GB DVD+R9 media should ship this spring and will be 2.4x speed discs according to Verbatim.

The first recording layer of the Verbatim DVD+R DL disc is semi-transparent, providing enough reflectivity for writing/reading data on the first layer, yet transmitting enough laser power to read/write on the second layer by refocusing the laser.

Details are slim -- I couldn't even find a picture, although I'm sure there's not much to see-- but Philips is pushing a new 16x DVD writer into the market that supports the Dual Layer standard. Although the news is clocking the burner at around six minutes per disc, I suspect that rate is only for single-layer DVDs. The 8.5-gigabyte dual layer burners from other manufacturers have been benchmarking much more slowly, in the 20 to 30 minute range for a single disc. Cost estimates are around $200-220 for consumers, and Dell is slated to recieve the first batch. Still, fast, like a cheetah, or a monkey on a cheetah. (Thanks, Jos!)
