Music Download Store Experimenting With
Demand-Based Pricing

Music Download Store Experimenting With
Demand-Based Pricing
01/08/2004 08:41 PM
One of the very good complaints about online music stores is that they offer all songs at the exact same price - which doesn't make much sense in the market place. So, one company is trying to test that out by offer ing dynamic pricing for its downloadable songs. The songs all start at the low low price of $0.10 per song, and then fluctuate based on demand. The company is still paying the $0.67 per song price to the music labels, so they're losing money on plenty of songs - but are saying that's the cost of the experiment. After they've spent the amount they've set aside, they'll go back to the old way of pricing. There are a few problems with this. First, explicit dynamic pricing tends to get a negative reaction from consumers - who feel they get ripped off when someone else bought the same product from the same store at a lower price. More importantly, though, true market pricing isn't just a function of demand - but of supply and demand. In this case, there's an infinite supply, so we're not really talking about market pricing at all. Furthermore, this service competes against plenty of other services that charge around a dollar for songs, so there's a clear upper limit on what they can charge for any song, no matter how popular. An interesting experiment, certainly, but not necessarily indicative of market pricing.

apple_osaka.jpg imageImpress Watch took advantage of Apple's offer to members of the press for a sneak preview of the Shinsaibashi store (in Osaka, Japan), and brought back images that remind me of... the Apple store in the mall. Not that it's an entirely bad thing - the mall stores are pretty swanky.

While we're on the topic of things not being bad, Apple's market in Japan certainly isn't either. This two story, 500 square meter Osaka store is the second Apple store in the country. Though the first floor appears to be your common Apple store, a glass staircase will take you to the second floor that features a bar and 25-person seminar room. The store will open to the public on the 28th, so I'm expecting a bunch of people to bum rush the place and help Apple pay for that much square footage in downtown Osaka.

While we're on the subject of Apple stores, the company also announced a third Apple store in Japan at the press event: Nagoya, to open early next year.

One Less Online Music Store To Deal With

One Less Online Music Store To Deal With 06/11/2004 12:55 PM
In early 2003 a group of the top brick-and-mortar music retail shops announc ed plans for a unified downloadable music store that got lots of attention. We were a bit skeptical, assuming (like most companies) they wouldn't really want to cannibalize their existing business models and would come up with something that was expensive and weak. They didn't even get that far. Without ever launching, they've pulled the plug on the program, claiming that there's just not enough business in online music sales for it to matter to them. While it's nice that there's not "yet another" online music store offering music that won't work with any music you buy from any other music download store, this is quite a statement on how these stores view downloadable music. Downloadable music is much more of a threat to the record stores' business models than the record labels, yet the stores have mostly decided to put their heads in the sand and assume it's not worth worrying about. Someone ought to send them a copy of < i>The Innovator's Dilemma.
