Sony VAIO Pocket Review, iPod Comparison

Sony VAIO Pocket Review, iPod Comparison 06/09/2004 09:10 AM

pocket_vs_ipod.jpg imageIf you want to stumble through the Babelfish translation, AV Watch Japan has a review of the Sony VAIO Pocket, the hard disk-based music player that's getting the most buzz as Sony's attempt to create an iPod-killer. Among other things, they compare sizes (!), and really that battery nodule on the back of the VAIO Pocket does it a disservice in pictures -- it's not nearly as big as it seems. Of course, the chink in the VAIO Pocket's armor is its inability to play any format but Sony's proprietary ATRAC3, meaning every song you want to copy to the VAIO Pocket has to be converted. 20GB of conversion is going to be sucky, but manageable; it's really just the principle of the thing (even Apple, head up their AAC, lets the iPod play MP3).

New Sony Cybershots, HP Photosmarts,
Including Sony T3 (Rawr!)

Sony_DSC-T3.jpg imageGott im Himmel, ze cameras! There have been like two dozen new cameras announced in the last few weeks as various manufacturers start ramping up for Christmas, and Sony and HP are no exception. Among the new Sonys announced today are two pocket-sized beauties that I want right now: the T3, an update to the T1 and Japan-only T11, a 5.1-megapixel camera that is Sony's thinnest at less than three-quarters of an inch; and the DSC-L1, a candy bar 4.1-megapixel unit that is only 3.75-inches long. Just when I was ready to buy a new camera Sony has to muck it all up with at least two that really do it for me. Oh, and there's also the new DSC-V3, a 7-megapixel unit that looks mighty fine, as well.

The HPs, well, they are okay, but I'll be honest, they don't get me all riled up as much as the two featherweight cameras from Sony do. If they fixed the middling image quality of the T1 in the T3, that may be my next sidearm. Living Room has a bunch of the press releases, and I'll add to this post if any more info comes through during the day.

Newsday’s Stephen Williams reports on seeing Sony’s NW-HD1 audio player in a store: “‘How’s it compare to the iPod?’ I asked a salesman. ‘Battery life is a lot longer, up to 30 hours,’ he said. ‘The LCD readout is kind of dim,’ I said. ’Battery life is a lot longer,’ he said. ‘I understand it can’t play MP3 files,’ I said. ‘Battery life is a lot longer,’ he said.” [Aug 17]

Ok, this story is appearing everywhere, and is a few days old, but people keep submitting it. So, in case you haven't caught it at one of the fifty other sites that have linked to it, according to the Florida State University newspaper, some administration folks there have decided to work out a great "compromise" deal with Apple to let FSU distribute iTunes for free on campus. Yes, that's right, the software that is already free everywhere, will also be free on FSU's campus. We can only assume they had blocked it out entirely before. Even better, FSU administrators struck a hard bargain with those Apple music barons by getting them to take a whopping $0.00 off the price of each song so, yes, you guessed it, each song will cost people $0.99. Such a deal! The best part, of course, are the quotes: "I think it is a fantastic idea," and "This just makes it more available for everybody else to use it." Ah yes, by offering the same deal that everyone else gets, it's now "more available." One hopes that in this "deal" FSU isn't actually paying anything to Apple, but if they are, congratulations Apple for suckering FSU. Someone might suggest (just maybe) that some of the administrators at FSU should sit in on a few classes taught by the wonderfully named Ransom McClung, teacher of classes on financial accounting and, yes, fraud examination.

Levels of Consciouness - A Comparison

Levels of Consciouness - A Comparison 09/12/2004 08:15 PM
Alain Morin of Mount Royal College has released another interesting paper on consciouness. Titled, Levels of consciousness and self-awareness: A comparison and integration of various views (PDF format), it attempts to bring some order to the wide range of theoretical models used to explain levels of consciousness. While the idea of "level of consciousness" has been around for more than a century, few theorists bother to explain their models with reference to previous models, while at the same time, they introduce new terms and concepts that add to the confusion. Alain compares nine theoretical models to find convergences, divergences, and especially important concepts that occur most frequently.

Can You Ban Customers From Comparison

Can You Ban Customers From Comparison
Shopping?
08/16/2004 04:25 PM
While Korean bookstores are worried about students photo graphing textbooks with camera phones, according to Alan Reiter, Dick's Sporting Goods is claiming to ban customers from using camera phones to stop them from comparison shopping. Why don't they just scream out that they're more expensive and to avoid them in the first place? While a store can decide which customers they want to serve, it seems particularly anti-customer to tell your customers they can't use a camera phone in your store. While I don't have a camera phone, I do often use my phone to look up more information about products I am looking at in a store, and it's helped convince me to buy a product quite a few times (though, the opposite is also true). Under the rules at Dick's Sporting Goods, apparently, they'd kick me out of the store for trying to be a more informed shopper. Companies can try to target just the dumb shoppers, but with the ease of information transfer these days, they're looking at a shrinking market.
