TiVo, Comcast Replace Stale Ignored Ads
With Fresh Ignored Ads
04/05/2005 05:40 PMIn the cat-and-mouse game of getting DVR owners to watch ads, you have
to hand it TiVo and friends on one score: they're not afraid to try
new things. You may recall from a couple years ago the
sweeps
takes gimmick tied to Lexus ads, and more recently they've been
testing a program that will put
pop-u
p ads in your fast-forwarded ads. The latest twist is a joint
development by TiVo and Comcast that will
update your DVR's recordings
with newer, more targeted ads. What's interesting here is not
necessarily the impact on viewers -- negligible, at best, despite the
inevitable protests of privacy advocates -- but rather TV's possible
transformation to more Internet-like advertising concepts such as
relevancy. More power to them, if they can pull it off.

TiVo Lives: Comcast Partnership

TiVo Lives: Comcast Partnership
Officially Announced
03/17/2005 03:52 AM
Well just leave it to
everyone's favorite DVR company to wait until the 11th hour to find a
way to resurrect themselves. TiVo and Comcast today announced a
strategic partnership wherein TiVo will develop new software to be
integrated into Comcast's existing DVR platform. TiVo's vice chairman
toyed a bit with grand understatements:
It is very
important that TiVo has found a way to work with the nation's largest
cable operator on a cooperative basis to develop a state-of-the-art
TiVo Service, fully integrated with a cable set-top box, that will
make TiVo available to millions of cable viewers.
As a
TiVo subscriber and one of those loyal fans you hear so much about (or
from, rather), I didn't want to believe
the reports about TiVo's forthcoming
demise. Rather, I grabbed onto whatever thread of sunshine I could,
praying TiVo wouldn't fall asunder. Just like an old-time Nintendo
fan, (which I also am) my blind loyalty has paid off, at least for
now, and TiVo will live to see another day. Besides, I actually enjoy
using TivoToGo.

Or Just Mispromoting A Small Deal?
TiVo Offering To Buy Off Journalists...
Or Just Mispromoting A Small Deal?
03/22/2005 05:03 PMApparently, TiVo sent out an email to a number of journalists recently
discussing their "TiVo Media Accommodation Program," that would let
people buy an 80 hour TiVo DVR with a $200 rebate. It didn't take
long, of course, for some to wonder if TiVo was trying to
buy off the
press. Others however, point out that
the deal isn't really
limited to the press and it wasn't that good of a deal in the
first place -- since other rebates are out there, and the real cost of
a TiVo is in the service. Still, the naming of the program and the
fact that it
was emailed out to journalists does seem a bit
questionable. Even if it was open to anyone, the fact that they're
specifically targeting special deals towards the press does raise some
questions. Unfortunately, this sort of stuff does happen all the time
-- but just doesn't get that much discussion.

Comcast Celebrates By Turning Off DNS
04/08/2005 12:13 PMIt looks like Adelphia cable broadband customers who are about to get
shifted over to Comcast have plenty of outages to look forward to.
The same evening that it's announced that
Time Warner and Comcast will jointly devour what's left of
Adelphia for about $18 billion, Comcast
had major DNS
issues leaving many of their users offline. Of course, in
explaining the widespread outage, Comcast is using their favorite
phrase:
"scheduled
maintenance." That's the same thing they told me when Comcast
turned off my service nearly every weekday last October. I would call
every morning and be told that it was "scheduled maintenance."
However, when I asked what the schedule was and if I'd have service
the next day, I was told they had no idea. Apparently, it doesn't
become scheduled until it actually cut you off.

Comcast Outages Prevent Comcast From
Commenting On Comcast Outages
04/14/2005 01:21 PMLast week, we noted that Comcast was having widespread outage
problems, which they
chalk
ed up to "scheduled maintenance", even though no one was actually
informed of said schedule ahead of time. It turns out that schedule
is pretty crowded, because all week long, there have been
continued
reports of recurring outages all across the Comcast network.
Comcast, of course, continues to be pretty much silent on the issue,
leaving its increasingly fed up call center staff to deal with
incredibly angry customers who feel they're getting no information at
all. How hard is it to admit that they screwed up and they're working
on fixing the problem? Instead of chalking it up to bogus scheduled
maintenance or pretending there's nothing wrong, admit what the
problem is and give people real updates. People would still be
unhappy, but at least they'd feel like the company wasn't ignoring
them. Of course, maybe they can't do that because Comcast staffers
don't have any internet access either...

Friends finale and NBC Tivo-b0rking --
TiVo Strikes Back
05/07/2004 10:49 AMFollowing up on yesterday's post about NBC's apparent attempts to b0rk
potential TiVoers of the Friends finale, BoingBoing reader Douglas
Clark says,
I am a loyal Tivo user and Tivo did send out a
message alert to users about the Friends episode. It was more along
the lines of "if you manually extend the time of a recording, you may
miss the beginning of the friends final episode." I find that Tivo is
pretty good about catching unusual start times and other wonky tricks
the networks play. The previous comment about HUT and ratings was
right on the money...
Link to previous BoingBoing post.
Tech maven Meg Hourihan
adds, "Even weirder is that I got a message on my Tivo warning me that
the finale of Friends would have abnormal times. The message warned
that if I wasn't just using the automatic "start on time" and "end on
time" settings (i.e. I manually set the start time as 8 PM) that I
might miss some. What makes things weirder and worse is that Tivo
still didn't record the whole show! I made sure my settings were what
the message instructed, and happened to watch the show live. Tivo
kicked in to record at 8:59 PM (which is what it listed the start time
as) but stopped at 9:59! According to the time on my digital cable
box, the program didn't end until 10:03 PM. So if I hadn't watched it
live, I would have missed the last four minutes. Seems like a major
screw-up on Tivo's part, especially after sending out that
message!"
