Hitachi to produce 1 TB drives
Hitachi to produce 1 TB drives
04/04/2005 11:36 AMHitachi on Monday is set to announce it will release hard drives
containing 230 gigabits of data per square inch by 2007, making a
1-inch 20 GB microdrive, allowing for a 20 GB iPod mini.
According to senior vice president of product strategy and marketing
at Hitachi Bill Healy, the density breakthrough represents a
refinement in perpendicular recording. Hard drives currently store
data in a longitudinally, with the heads scanning over a horizontal
plane. For perpendicular recording, data bits are aligned vertically,
allowing for more data to be placed into an area.
"We're redesigning the head and disc quite significantly," Healy told
CNET. "All we have done is longitudinal recording in hard drives since
the 1950s. We've got a babysitting program running in the back to see
how the hard drives are doing. We are building up our understanding
of our quality and reliability."

Shouldn't be much of a surprise, but the leakiest PR group in
hard drives, Hitachi, has confirmed that they're newest 6GB Microdrive
will be used inside one of Palms PDAs—almost certainly a
successor to, or upgraded version of the LifeDrive.
Also, note! CanalPDA is translating some of their news items into
English. That's a good thing, because the only words I can understand

Hitachi Pal and Chum Robots
Hitachi Pal and Chum Robots
03/22/2005 04:46 PM
Lots of robots are showing up for the World Exposition in
Japan's Aichi prefecture later this month, including these two bots
from Hitachi that look a bit like Segways. Dubbed 'Pal and Chum,' for
their ability to both lure and befriend sharks, the 150-pound robots
are reported to have reaction times as low a 1/10th of a second.
We spoke of the duo last week as walking assistants, but apparently
that's not the case. In fact, if you were to use them to stop yourself
from falling, they'd probably go right over. Plus, it took me a week
to think of that shark gag.

02/01/2005 09:08 PM
Hitachi has announced a new Japanese PDA called the
FLORA-ie MX1, a 400MHz Pocket PC running Windows Mobile 2003SE. The
most stand-out feature of the MX1 is definitely the Zaurus-like
slide-out keyboard which is certain to make it lusted after by many
Western Pocket PC fans, who have been privy to integrated keyboards
before, but nothing quite the same. As a big fan of the Zaurus form
factor (and less so the Linux environment it runs) I'd say it's a
pretty appealing design. I hope Hitachi considers bringing it to the
US.
It's beefy, too, with a 4-inch VGA screen, built-in Bluetooth and
Wi-Fi, and SD and CF slots—everything a Windows pocket-sagger
should be.
