In sunny San Diego

In sunny San Diego 03/17/2005 03:25 AM

I'm in San Diego at Etech. If you're here, come say hi! I look a little different. According to Xeni -- who didn't recognize me -- I look, "less stressed" that I used to. I think it's also the longer hair that's a big frizzy mess in the oceany yumminess that's San Diego's humidity. I've snapped a photo from my phone so you can get an idea of my new "look" and how tired I am from flying so very far in a horribly old cramped 737 that felt like taking a pick-up truck through the sky for six+ hours.

On my way to sunny San Diego

On my way to sunny San Diego 02/10/2004 02:56 AM
I'm writing this on the plane to the O'Reilly Digital Democracy Teach-In and Emerging Technologies conference in sunny San Diego. Sitting just behind me on the plane and reading news on paper is Tim O'Reilly, whose generosity made it possible for me to attend the conferences. I infer that he must have a lot of confidence in Rael and the smooth workings of the whole O'Reilly organization to wait to show up until the night before a 4 day conference he is putting on. I'm excited about learning more about new technologies, and encouraged that technologists are thinking about how they can improve our badly wounded democracy, as well as catching up with a lot of people that I know only from email and their writing. Unlike a lot of other people, I'm not particularly good at writing while people are speaking -- I find that it distracts me from thinking about what they are saying, so I probably won't write much during the conference. I leave that up to the usual suspects, who can type faster than I can speak, and who manage to add decent commentary as well....

Soon I'll be in San Diego

Soon I'll be in San Diego 03/14/2005 05:38 PM
You may have noticed over on the sidebar (unless you're an RSS reader, in which case here's a special message for you (non-RSS readers, feel free to skip ahead): you're missing new content that I don't syndicate! I put little messages and pictures in the sidebar! Come back to the lovely old HTML megnut.com!) that I'll be attending the 4th Annual O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference later this month in San Diego. I've been to every Emerging Tech conference and am once again looking forward to the trip and the experience. I'm especially looking forward to hearing New Yorker columnist James Surowiecki speak (Independent Individuals and Wise Crowds, or Is It Possible to Be Too Connected?), as he's one of my favs from the magazine. And there's a hardware hacks (Hardware Hacks from the Far Side) session that piques my interest as well. I always find I go to the sessions about hardware and then envision myself soldering things and building my own army of robots once I get home. Alas, I have yet to build one robot arm or leg, so there's nothing even close to a company or regiment of robots in my apartment. But maybe this is the year! Of course, my army of robots would be a peace-loving type of army, tasked with feeding the cat while I'm out of town and emptying his kitty litter. Maybe they'd do some dishes too. In summary, in case you had trouble following that crazy post: I'm going to the Emerging Technology Conference. And: yay!

Diego Doval 07/03/2004 12:08 PM
In next week's InfoWorld column, I quote Diego Doval, CTO of clevercactus. Or rather, I meant to quote him. For reasons that escape me, I attributed Diego's remarks to Diego Rivera, the famous Mexican muralist. I have no earthly idea how I managed to transpose the living computer scientist and the dead artist. Since Diego Rivera won't be reading this, I'll direct my apology to Diego Doval. On the plane to San Diego

On the plane to San Diego 02/10/2004 02:47 AM

Back before all this weblogging stuff, I used to work as a consultant. Every Monday I had to get up and fly off to some city (Newark NJ, Bloomington IL by way of Chicago, Atlanta, etc.) where I'd spend the week working on-site at the client's office, and then I'd fly home on Friday afternoon, often barely arriving in time for dinner. I'd have two days home, and then be off again bright early Monday AM. It was fun and grueling, and this morning I got a little taste of my old life.

I woke up at 4:45 AM to catch a 7 AM flight to San Diego for the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference. At the gate I noticed my former compatriots, the Monday morning business travelers. During the pre-boarding, I was the only woman, surrounded by men with suits, briefcases, and trench coats. It was just like the old days, and yet it wasn't, thanks to the amazing technology advances in the past six years. In the past it used to take me two laptop batteries to make it across the country, and even then, I'd often run out. And as for music, I was pretty much limited to the amount of CDs I could carry with me. So far today I've been flying for over three hours and I've got nearly 50% of my battery left on my iBook. My iPod also still has half its charge, and over 4 straight days of music sit at my fingertips. Pretty incredible, it sure makes for a more pleasant trip. Now if only they could do something about speeding up the flight, and warming up the plane!

First impressions of San Diego

First impressions of San Diego 02/10/2004 02:56 AM
I arrived in San Diego fairly late, and went straight to my hotel. In the interest of economy, I had decided to stay in the local Hostel. I wouldn't recommend it. Speaking politely, it is grimy. They sell ear plugs at the front desk. I don't mind spartan, but I like clean. I've stayed in $12 hotels in Central America that were cleaner and had more amenities. And there is no net connection, not even dial-up! I would happily trade the old TV in the room for a phone line, and both of them for a good cleaning. Oh well, I don't expect to spend much time in the hotel, and luckily I used HTTrack Website Copier to mirror the O'Reilly Conference website before I left Berkeley, so at least I have conference resources locally. After getting settled in my hotel room, I decided to go for a walk before going to bed, and I wandered over to the Westin where the conference is going to be held. Not having a clue as to what the neighborhood was like late at night, I decided not to bring my computer with me. The sight of a Hooters a block away from my hotel didn't fill me with confidence about the security of the area. I had never seen a Hooters before - I thought they were a mythical chain, equivalent to unicorns. Guess not. I suspect I have some culture shocks coming, on my third trip to Southern California in my 20 years living in California. I had a lovely walk over to the Westin. The air was balmy, and it was comfortable walking in shirt sleeves. The streets in the Gaslamp district were mostly empty, except for a few straggling partiers, drunks, and homeless folks. I wandered into the lounge in the Westin, and found a number of geeks taking advantage of the free wireless in the bar. I had a drink and watched the digerati arrive and gather. Many of the same people who I always see at these conferences -- the dour Dan Gillmor, the ever polite Doc Searls, the bubbling Cory Doctorow, plus the crew from O'Reilly -- the mysterious Rael Dornfest, and the earnest Schuyler Erle, had gathered around the tables. There were also lots of people I've never met, like Jon Lebkowsky and a group of young European hackers swapping jet-lag stories. After my drink...

AT&T Wireless Offers 3G in Dallas and
San Diego
09/01/2004 09:52 AM
AT&T Wireless said it is offering its 3G network in Dallas and San Diego: San Diego should be a particularly interesting market as it will be the first in the country to have competing 3G services--Verizon Wireless already has its EV-DO network live there. It will also be interesting to watch if the two networks seem to have any affect on Wi-Fi usage. On a side note, AT&T Wireless cleverly uses the term "metropolitan hotspot" to describe the service in the two markets. That term is usually used to describe the stringing together of Wi-Fi hotspots to cover a large region or by WiMax-like technologies that aim to blanket a city. It's really a stretch to compare the AT&T Wireless service to Wi-Fi. AT&T Wireless says its network offers 220 kbps to 320 kbps, with bursts up to 384 kbps, while even 802.11b, depending on how many people are sharing a network, usually can deliver multiple megabits of throughput....
