Palm Pilot

When I travel, I usually write everything that's super important to me down on a 8.5x11 piece of paper, fold it twice, and stick it in my pocket. That way, when I need to look up a phone number or jot down an address, I don't have to get out a notebook, my computer, or hunt around for a piece of scrap paper. And it won't ever get stolen like a cell phone or handheld might.

Yamaha 57i Router with Analog SIP Ports

Yamaha 57i Router with Analog SIP Ports 09/07/2004 06:47 AM

< img src="http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/images/Yamaha57i.jpg" alt="Yamaha57i.jpg image" width="103" height="156" class="right"/>Ronald Gruia points out this Japan-only broadband router from Yamaha, the 57i, that not only does all the usual router stuff - including IPv6 support, because they do that over there - but also has a two RJ-11 ports so you can plug in regular analog phones and use them as SIP devices. There are similar devices available in the US - it's essentially what Vonage sells you when you get the service, albeit not exactly the same standards - but it's sort of interesting to see it actually on the router itself, as a sign that we're moving towards one point of entry for all household data.

Thanko 256MB MP3 Flash Watch With Analog
Face
06/17/2004 10:06 AM

thanko_mp3_watch.jpg imageWhile running a cord from my wrist sounds like a good way to constantly rip my headphones out of my ears, I have to admit a certain admiration for these new MP3 SuperDisk Watches from Thanko. Not because they're good looking -- they're not -- but because despite cramming up to 256MB of flash memory and MP3 decoding hardware inside, they've still managed to make a watch that looks, for all intents and purposes, normal. It does use a separate cord which would have to be carried around if you want to add or remove data, which could be a hassle, but the watch face is even analog, and waterproof besides. Pick one up at your local Japanese gray market electronics store for only around $150.

micron1.jpgMusic has gone vintage-chic. Fat, bleep-y 60s- and 70s-era synthesis sounds are hot, and it's no fad—classic electronic sounds are here to stay. Audio electronics inventor Bob Moog is now a virtual God, with a movie and soundtrack out. But maybe you can't afford shelling out a few grand for the original, or $2000+ for a new Moog synth. And you don't want to have to boot your computer just to make music with a software instrument. Take heart: new hardware rivals software for sound quality and even price.
