My latest article at TheFeature.com is an interview with architect William J. Mitchell, director of MIT's Media Lab and author of three essential books about the spaces we inhabit, online and off:
"Increasingly, we are living our lives at the points where electronic information flows, mobile bodies, and physical places intersect in particularly useful and engaging ways," he writes. "These points are becoming the occasions for a characteristic new architecture of the twenty-first century." Link

This week we had a very informative discussion about messaging with Benjamin Mitchell and John Bristowe (with a special appearance by Michèle Leroux Bustamante in the second half). Benjamin and John cut through the WS-AlphabetSoup set of specifications, avoid frequent references to SOA and cover what the benefits of Web services are, why you might want to use WSE (security, policy, addressing and support for TCP), how to use Web services in your applications today and where Microsoft is heading with Web services and Indigo in the future.

Baker_vs_robot.jpg imageIn an amazing bit of promotion for iRobot (the company, not the travesty), one of the new Roomba Discoveries has written a comparison review for San Diego Source, putting an Electrolux Trilobite and columnist Phil Baker in an head-to-head deathmatch to answer the home automation question of our time: Can an $1,800 euro-robot clean floors more effectively than a technology columnist? Surprisingly, while Phil Baker is almost $1,500 cheaper than the Trilobite (at $250), his performance stands up fairly compared to the more expensive model, although he does have a tendency to leak some dust out of his waste pan when picked up. Score one for the journos!

Russell Baker on Paul Krugman, Joan
Didion on George W. Bush: the NYRB is 40
10/28/2003 11:08 PM
It seems slightly scandalous that Krugman has persisted in noting that the present administration has been moving the lion's share of the money to an array of corporate interests distinguished by the greed of their CEOs, an indifference toward their workers, and boardroom conviction that it is the welfare state that is ruining the country. Krugman has been strident. He has been shrill. He has lowered the dignity of the commentariat. How refreshing. Russell Baker reviews Paul Krugman's The Great Unraveling: Losing Our Way in the New Century. We have now reached a point when even the White House may be forced to sort out how a president who got elected to execute a straightforward business agenda managed to sandbag himself with the coinciding fantasies of the ideologues in the Christian fundamentalist ministries and those in his own administration.... Joan Didion reviews Armageddon: The Cosmic Battle of the Ages by Tim F. LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins. The New York Review of Books 40th anniversary edition is an especially good read..

Slashdot Is Worthless

Slashdot Is Worthless 01/07/2003 09:53 PM
There. I said it. Slashdot is worthless. OK, I'll admit that the headlines are useful, but the comments certainly are not. The sad thing about Slashdot is that there are still people posting useful and interesting comments, and they're utterly and completely lost among the utter crap that floods the site. Generally I make do by simply ignoring the comments section on Slashdot entirely, but after reading the comments on the Jhai PC yesterday, I realized that the comments section is not just worthless but actually a malign force. -- rafeco

I see it slightly differently. Slashdot is great as a black hole for all the stupid comments you have kept deep down inside you, a place you can let go of all your shit. Just like this weblog!

The Slashdot Effect

The Slashdot Effect 12/17/2004 06:43 PM

Slashdot effect: Interesting comments and links about the Slashdot effect.

Few definitive numbers exist regarding the precise magnitude of the Slashdot effect, but estimates put the peak of the mass influx of page requests at anywhere from several hundred to several thousand hits per minute. The flood usually peaks when the article is at the top of Slashdot's front page and gradually subsides as the story is superseded by newer items. Traffic usually remains at elevated levels until the article is pushed off the front page, which can take from 12 to 18 hours after its initial posting.

Someday people will live in fear of "The Gadgetopia Effect."
