Google stretches Gmail access 03/17/2005 02:47 AM
Google began randomly offering Gmail accounts to one in twenty Google.com visitors this week. Previously, users could only create accounts Gmail accounts by invitation from Google or from an existing Gmail user. "We just started offering Gmail accounts to a randomly selected sample on Google," Google's director of consumer Web products Marissa Mayer said. "It's a natural step to leverage the wider user base of Google.com to grow Gmail. Based on the success of this one-in-20 scope, we'll be ramping it up over the next couple of weeks."

Gmail Update

Gmail Update 04/10/2004 09:52 PM
Mark Pilgrim: Gmail accessibility "Gmail is the least web-like web application I have ever seen." I have also received a Gmail account and can concur. Gmail uses clever JavaScript tricks to try to come close to the usability of a GUI email client -- and it comes quite close. It's incredibly fast, it's got nice keyboard controls, and the interface is simple and clean. But it doesn't have any of the features of a web app. There are no URLs, the back button does not work, links are faked, pages are coded in JavaScript and not HTML. It isn't a web application, it's a GUI application that just happens to run inside a Web browser....

USATODAY.com - Google eyes a gaggle of sites: They recently doubled their claim of pages crawled, from 3.3 billion to over 6 billion.

The Mountain View, Calif., firm's "tens of thousands" of computers crawl the Web often to find pages to add. To grow the index, Google couldn't add more PC power, for fear of crashing certain Web sites; instead, it formed a secondary index. [...]

While 6 billion pages sounds "really impressive," says Chicago-area Web site designer Shari Thurow, "a considerable part of the database is 'search spam.' "
