Holy Father on rootkit writing for fun,
profit
03/17/2005 03:10 AM

The software developer behind a leading rootkit program says he is motivated by necessity, curiosity and a desire to expose weaknesses in the Windows operating system and security technology. He also isn't too worried about how others might use his software, according to an e-mail interview with IDG News Service.

Holy Bestseller, Holy Sequel

Holy Bestseller, Holy Sequel 05/20/2004 11:37 AM
The Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown says he considered including another theory in the book that would have inflamed Christians even more than the notion that Jesus married Mary Magdalene and made babies. What if Jesus survived the crucifixion? According to this AP Article, "Brown said the theory is backed by a number of 'very credible sources,' but that he ultimately decided it was too flimsy." I'm burned out on the whole Holy Blood, Holy Grail trip though. Brown's next book, set in Washington, revolves around the Masons! Apparently, the dust jacket of The Da Vinci Code contains a clue about the sequel. Link

Holy Vandals, Holy Grail

Holy Vandals, Holy Grail 05/21/2004 11:17 AM
An historic monument in central England that may hold the key to the location of the Holy Grail was damaged by vandals on Tuesday. The BBC reports that "a gang of youths climbed on top of The Shepherd's Monument at Shugborough Hall" and started smashing away.
"The Shepherd's Monument is of international importance, both as a work of art and because of the legend that a baffling inscription on the monument provides clues to the true location of the Holy Grail," said the home's general manager Richard Kemp.
Interestingly, the vandalism came on the heels of a visit by former code-breakers from War II intent on cracking the 10-letter puzzle. The Shepherd's Monument is discussed in depth in the book Holy Blood, Holy Grail, inspiration for The Da Vinci Code. Link to a National Public Radio piece about the code-breakers. Li nk to the BBC story on the vandalism. (Thanks, Kev!)

Is there a rootkit hunter in your
arsenal?

It's been about three years since I woke up one morning and discovered my Web/mail server was rooted. Thinking back, I must have assumed that just running Linux was enough to keep me out of harm's way. These days I am not so cocky. I try to keep current with security patches for the apps I run. I don't run services I don't need or use. And there is a firewall between me and the wild. One thing I haven't made a part of my regular routine -- not yet, at least -- is checking for rootkits on a regular basis. That may be about to change, since I found a nifty little project called rootkit hunter.

Not-for-profit versus for-profit economy

Not-for-profit versus for-profit economy 01/07/2004 04:28 PM

Today's Boston Globe carries two contrasting front-page stories.  "As economy gains, outsourcing surges" talks about how American workers at for-profit companies must compete with 84 million Filipinos, many of whom are well-educated, speak good English, and are delighted to work for $300/month.  Things are looking more cheerful for U.S. workers in the not-for-profit sector.  A front-page story on Boston University's search for a new president revealed that the school decided to pay Dan Goldin $1.8 million in exchange for... not working at all.  Considering that Mr. Goldin had yet to start his job, that's a pretty good hourly rate.  You could hire a staff of 45 Filipino engineers for ten years with that $1.8 mil!

[Update:  the Globe runs a three-article series on "the white collar job migration".  Article 2 is "US workers see hard times" and includes a quote from a venture capitalist: "Right when you think about Employee 11, you should think about India.  My view is you should not start a company from scratch in the United States ever again.''  Article 3 is "US business students find opportunity is global" and talks about how MBAs are adapting.  A more interesting article appears in the same issue, November 4, "As work shifts, internship in India the new rite of passage" and starts with "An increasing number of US students are going to India to intern at top information technology services firms or to participate in tours that allow them to network with the country's corporate elite."  The American interns, most of whom are MBAs or MBA students, get paid about $350/month (compared to their old internships of $7000/month in the U.S.).]
