The Truth About Lithium Ion Batteries
06/24/2005 07:08 PMThe comedian Jerry Seinfeld had a joke that the only warning label
people took seriously was “dry clean only.”” But I think I
found another one: the “charge this device completely before you
attempt to use it for the first time”” warning. People lose
their minds at the the thought of trying a new cell phone or MP3
player until it has charged its heart out for hour and hours on end.

A look at iPod batteries
A look at iPod batteries
03/19/2005 03:27 AMSince it’s debut in 2001, iPod users have had to contend with the
thorny issue of battery replacement.
Apple iPods are not unique in the world of rechargeable devices,
writes Lance Ulanoff of PC Mag.com. All of the MP3 players on the
market use rechargeable batteries, however some are designed for easy
battery replacement by the owner. In his comprehensive article,
Ulanoff outlines Apple’s battery replacement policy and gives the
background in what has been a contentious issue for many iPod owners.
“Maybe Apple made a mistake by not making them so consumers could
replace their own batteries, but perhaps that's the price you pay for
that much-lauded Apple industrial design,” Ulanoff concludes. “So
please, enough with the wild conspiracy theories and the threats of
class-action lawsuits. The iPod's a good player. Apple's not trying to
pull a fast one, and some of you need to learn a little more about
rechargeable battery care.”

On scientific truth and Christian
truth...
07/16/2004 06:40 AMIn the middle of an
article about the way that the religious right have interfered with
scientific work in the US, I find a troubling paragraph:
At a time when biology is poised to undergo a fundamental
revolution, the US government, arguably the most potent government in
the history of the world, is rife with White House appointees who
believe that scientific truth and Christian truth cannot be
synonymous, and may well be in opposition.
I ask myself - do I believe that scientific truth and Christian
truth can be synonymous? My answer - no. I ask myself - do I believe
that they may well be in opposition? My answer - yes. The only
difference between me and the people from the religious right then, is
that we disagree with which 'truth' is the more reliable. I stick on
the side of the people who test their conclusions and refine their
belief systems with reference to evidence - they stick to the side of
the people who believe that a magic being sets bushes on fire and
turns women into salt.
So the scary bit for me is not that the nutters in power believe
that the two are incompatible, but that the assumption is that for
reasonable, normal, run-of-the-mill scientists all across America that
it's normal to be able to reconcile meteorology with the concept of
rains of blood and biology with people who bring people back from the
dead...

David Pescovitz:
My latest article for TheFeature is about new battery designs for
mobile devices, from an onboard nuclear trickle charger that harnesses
radioactive energy to a microbattery made with the same techniques
used to fabricate computer chips.
"In late 18th century, Italian physicist Luigi Galvani
shocked the public by demonstrating that an amputated frog's leg
twitched when touched with certain metals. Galvani was convinced that
energy stored in the frog's leg caused the jerk. He called the
accumulated juice "animal electricity." Galvani's friend Alessandro
Volta called it nonsense. To prove that the energy came from the
metal, not the flesh, Volta eventually made a sandwich of silver,
moist cardboard, and zinc. His device also spurred frogs' legs to
spasm. In the end, Volta won the intellectual battle and also invented
the battery. Two hundred years later, the technology hasn't changed
much."

Flashlight For A Variety Of Batteries
Flashlight For A Variety Of Batteries
09/15/2004 01:39 PMSometimes it's the simplest ideas that make a lot of sense. As people
in Florida have been stocking up on batteries for their flashlights,
it reminds you how you always need to make sure you have the right
batteries around for your flashlights. They all seem to take
different size batteries, and people always end up with random spare D
or C batteries they don't know what to do with. One company is trying
to solve that problem by creating
a flashlight that will work with AA, C and D
cell batteries with the flick of a switch. They claim the
flashlight will show just as much light with any of the options, but
the weaker batteries won't last as long.

12/27/2004 11:20 AMGood morning, internet friends. Another Christmas has come and
gone, and yet, I am still without a Nintendo DS. If my attempt to find
one in a store yesterday was any indication, they've been a big
hit—both games and systems have been impossible to find.
Fortunately, my little brother's arms are very pliable, enabling me to
bend them behind his back with only the slightest of pressure, popping
his DS from his grasp into mine. Small family are the best kind to
steal from.
It's good to be back in the bloggy saddle, though, so let those
tips flow like the sap of the nog bush. Also, feel free to send in
links to your favorite reviews this year from across the internet. I'd
like to take a look back at everyone's favorites and compare them with
mine.
Also, look! A new AA battery that lasts twice as long but costs
only 10 percent more. If Nintendo wouldn't have used rechargables
inside the DS, you'd have gotten a nice segue.

Alpine iPod Ready
Alpine iPod Ready
01/11/2004 10:13 AMAlpine are set to introduce
iPod Ready
— a new car stereo that links up with your iPod :
With a simple one-cable connection, iPod users will be able to operate
key playback features from the Alpine receiver's buttons and have
display of playlists, album, artist and songs on the head unit. The
iPod can then be safely stored in the glove box or console because it
acts like a portable hard drive connected to the head unit through
Alpine's powerful Ai-Net system bus. The Alpine connectivity solution
also provides charging of the iPod's internal battery.
Cool. The unit won't be available until the summer, and there's no
mention of pricing yet, but hopefully it'll reach the UK — and
maybe even fit the Mini's dash...

The Alpine unit looks nice, though. I think the best thing is that
it's part of a whole system, so that any Ai-Net-equipped head unit
can interface with the iPod, including using the aforementioned knob
to scroll through like you would with the iPod's built-in wheel.
Better than iPod Your BMW, that's for sure.

Alpine has announced that their newer

Really, all it means is that the satellite receivers use the generic
Ai-NET interface to connect, much like the Alpine KCA-420i iPod Interface, so you
can add components piecemeal as you see fit. You can use one of
the satellite receivers with the KCA-420i units in the same system,
though, so maybe you could have both satellite radios as an option.
