power to attack large portions of the Internet.

Been having a stag party. Not mine, though, contrary to some rumors.
Pretty much traditional stuff, except that a) I have not slept since
Friday (39 hours up straight I think - I opted for quality time with
Outi over sleep, I think I'm going for my record here), and 2) the
weather has been tossing some surprises our way. Suffice to say that
we have been very wet.

Though, knowing myself, I'll probably end up coding some sorely missed

generally obsessed with finally releasing 2.2 :-)

“Microsoft has issued a formal fix for a problem in Windows

04/19/2004 05:50 AM
I didn't do anything except work this weekend on an IE toolbar for
a client.
Much of the time was spent on pushing pixels around to try this
look and that effect.
Still, it's not state of art GUI because Win32 alphablending
functions are not supported
on all the platforms. I won't be doing much animation
either. Just no
time and no room.
Thankfully, the visuals are mostly done and I can move on to
messing with IE's COM
objects and events. Lots of joy there (eyeroll). I
would rather design
new technologies and lead special teams on hot projects but being a
consultant means
having to do what clients ask for. I sure hope rest of you
had a better weekend
than me.

Dorkbot founder Douglas Repetto, Mark

College film/media professor

groups from seven countries (including Leonel Moura's ink pen-wielding

"The show
celebrates the strange and wonderful collision of shifty artists,
disgraced engineers, high/low/no tech hackers, rogue scientists,
beauty school dropouts, backyard pyros, and industrial espionage that
has come to define the emerging field of robotic art. Participants
include robots that sketch, carve, float, wiggle, hum, ring, grow,
wander, and sing, as well a number of works the form and function of
which are not yet well understood"

04/09/2004 04:00 PMI'm a child of the 80s and I take great pride in it. I've always
scored above average on the various "80s purity test" sites. As a

Blogging and iFrames or Is This Content
Theft?
02/07/2003 09:40 AMBlogging and iFrames or Is This Content Theft?
Well this is a new thing I haven't seen before -- using an iFrame to
pull an entire entry into the display context of someone else's blog.
And I don't mean that they are pulling the content out of the RSS so
it at least looks right -- they are grabbing the content right from
the permalink by sucking in the entire HTML, template, look and feel
and all. It is very, very, odd. Example 1. Example 2. When I
mentioned this to someone via IM, his comment was "Someone's a little
obsessed with keeping people on his site" and I'd add "Or they think
this will help their google ranking a lot".
This feels like bad form to me and seems close to content theft in the
same way that sites that once upon a time framed over existing content
and showed their own banner ads where eventually thought to be content
theft. Comments? Thoughts? Is this a good thing to do or just plain
wrong?

Going JavaScript-less?
02/18/2004 02:19 AMHow many people actually shut off JavaScript in their browsers? In
the Web development world, you're constantly advised not to depend on
JavaScript because "[insert double-digit percentage here] of Web
surfers shut off JavaScript."
I have never known someone who shut off JavaScript. I have used a
lot of computers in my life — many not my own — and never
in one case have I noticed that JavaScript was intentionally disabled.
I have never had anyone I know tell me that they shut off JavaScript
to solve a problem. I have never even been remotely tempted to do
this myself.
Is there anyone out there who has actually shut off JavaScript in
their browser? Can you tell us why?

Javascript from Python
12/29/2003 06:51 PMIn a way I'm disappointed to see python-sp
idermonkey released. It's a Python wrapper around the Mozilla
project's SpiderMonkey Javascript
engine which allows Python scripts to execute Javascript code in a
rock-solid, battle-tested embedded interpreter.
Why the disappointment? Because just 5 days ago I decided that a
Python wrapper for SpiderMonkey would be the ideal project for me to
finally attempt to do something productive with C. John J. Lee
evidently beat me to it. I can't complain though, as I was estimating
a good six months to figure out how to get it all working.
Pettiness aside, this looks like a really valuable project. In
addition to being critical for such things as web based unit testing
(John's DOMForm does
exactly that) it may also provide a useful "sandbox" protected
interpreted scripting language for Python projects. Python's own rexec
module is meant to provide a safe sandbox for executing
potentially hostile code but has been disabled due to potential
vulnerabilities. The SeaMonkey Javascript interpreter is tried and
tested in this capacity, at least in its incarnation within the
Mozilla family of web browsers.
