The call of the digital Siren

The call of the digital Siren 12/18/2003 10:42 AM
The rate at which the online digital music market is growing is reminiscent of the Internet boom of the late 1990s. Companies are jumping into the industry blindly, in hopes of capitalizing on the perceived success Apple has had opening the market. The number of competitors -- some with no ties to the music or technology industries -- entering the market is growing so quickly that it has become necessary to check daily which new players have joined the fray. It's almost like the people...

Open source book-writing

Open source book-writing 05/04/2004 05:14 AM
JD Lasica is working on a book called "Darknet," which is to be a comprehensive account of the file-sharing debate and P2P. He's posting the entire text on a wiki for public comment, revision and addition: brave, clever man.
In the spirit of open media and participatory journalism, I'd like to use this wiki to publish drafts of each chapter in the book. I hope you'll participate in this effort by contributing feedback, edits, criticism, corrections, and additional anecdotes, either through the comments field below or by sending me email. Feel free to be as detailed as you like or to insert comments or questions. After all, you're the editor. (And remember, this is for a book manuscript, not a finished online document.) If you make a couple of helpful edits, I'll mention your name in the book's Acknowledgments (and buy you a drink next time we meet up).

More Open Access To Digital Content

More Open Access To Digital Content 11/17/2003 04:17 AM
While things like MIT's OpenCourseWare and the new file sharing of lessons from the Berklee College of Music are getting all the attention, the well known iBiblio has been chugging away for over a decade, hosting all sorts of content for free. Years ago, it was known as SunSITE, when it was sponsored by Sun, but it eventually became iBiblio, and is hosted at UNC. It's mostly known for hosting open source software, but is expanding rapidly into all sorts of open content that people all over the world find useful. The guy who runs it seems to understand that there's a value in giving away things for free - and says that he's told folks in the music industry how they're making a mistake in calling music downloaders pirates. He points out that the people who go to the trouble of downloading music are the ones who are most interested in the music, and thus should be the people the recording industry is most excited about.

"The purpose of the Open Video Project is to collect and make available a repository of digitized video content for the digital video, multimedia retrieval, digital library, and other research communities. Researchers can use the video to study a wide range of problems, such as tests of algorithms for automatic segmentation, summarization, and
creation of surrogates that describe video content; the development of face recognition algorithms; or creating and evaluating interfaces that display result sets from multimedia queries. Because researchers attempting to solve similar problems will have access to the same video content, the repository is also intended to be used as a test collection that will enable systems to be compared, similar to the way the TREC conferences are used for text retrieval." The project has demonstrated the efficacy of many technical processes for organizing, searching, and scaling video DLs. This has been added to Research Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

The Economics of Open Source Hijacking and Declining Quality of Digital Information Resources: A Case for Copyleft by Andrea Ciffolilli
http://opensourc e.mit.edu/papers/ciffolili.pdf

Abstract:
The economics of information goods suggest the need of institutional intervention to address the problem of revenue extraction from investments in resources characterized by high fixed costs of production and low marginal costs of reproduction and distribution. Solutions to the appropriation issue, such as copyright, are supposed to guarantee an incentive for innovative activities at the price of few vices marring their rationale. In the case of digital information resources, apart from conventional inefficiencies, copyright shows an extra vice since it might be used perversely as a tool to hijack and privatise collectively provided open source and open content knowledge assemblages. Whilst the impact of hijacking on open source software development may be uncertain or uneven, some risks are clear in the case of open content works. The paper presents some evidence of malicious effects of hijacking in the Internet search market by discussing the case of The Open Directory Project. Furthermore, it calls for a wider use of novel institutional remedies such as copyleft and Creative Commons licensing, built upon the paradigm of copyright customisation.

Book Publishers Selling Direct - Pissing
Off Book Retailers

Book Publishers Selling Direct - Pissing
Off Book Retailers
02/13/2004 05:52 AM
One of the struggles that companies have as distribution and sales mechanisms change is handling legacy channel conflict issues. Dell became huge by selling direct to customers, but when rival Compaq started to move in that direction, their retail partners freaked out - and Compaq had to scale back their plans. It appears that book publishers are now going through the same process. They've realized that if someone is looking for info about certain books on their site, it makes sense to also offer them a chance to buy it. However, it's pissing off retailers, who don't want to hear that their suppliers are competing with them. Retailers say a reasonable compromise would be having the publishers point to the retailers, which was my first response as well. However, then it becomes a political situation of who do you link to and why? There's also the fact that this makes for a less enjoyable consumer experience. I know that, more than once, I've been annoyed at online sites where I go for info on buying a product, but when I try to buy am given a big list of retailers instead of a way to buy right away.
