Free PC Parts Exchange
06/06/2005 12:09 AM
I've seen a few of these things come and go
and none of them have been really able to survive for longer than a
few months. I mean, there's already freecycle and Craigslist out
there, so "free love hippie exchanges" are pretty well covered.
However, this is a parts exchange for geeks by geeks so maybe that
will keep them going for a bit. Seems like a nice, friendly way to
share PC parts, but what do I know?

Fun with Homebrew Parts
12/21/2003 12:05 PMEvery robot builder has been faced with needing (or wanting) parts
that
don't fit the budget. What's the solution? We try to improvise by
building a homebrew replacement. Jack W. Crenshaw has
written an amusing
article
in Embedded Systems magazine on this subject. He tells of an obsession
in his college days
to have (then unaffordable) seven-segment displays to play with. First
he
struggled to build a seven-segment display out of things like ice cube
trays
and light bulbs. He followed that up with a plan to build a circuit
full
of oscillators and counters that could generate the waveforms needed
to
turn his
oscilliscope into a seven segment display.

11/15/2003 01:15 PMSteve Davee of the Portland Area Robotics
Society (PARTS) writes,
"Along the lines of tiny robots, I wanted
to bring to your attention the cutting edge of hobby robotics as far
as
small robots go, and a bit of the history behind it. About three years
ago, the current PARTS president, Pete Skegg, created a tiny pic-based
robot controller
board that allowed us to have the first micro-sumo (5cm cubed, 100
grams) competition". Read on for a wealth of info and links

Registry of Standard Biological Parts
Registry of Standard Biological Parts
03/26/2005 07:17 AMRegistry of Standard Biological Partshttp://parts.mit.edu/The
development of well-specified, standard, and interchangable biological
parts is a critical step towards the design and construction of
integrated biological systems. The MIT Registry of Standard Biological
Parts supports this goal by recording and indexing biological parts
that are currently being built and offering synthesis and assembly
services to construct new parts, devices, and systems. In the future,
they hope to expand this support in the areas of standards for
biological part families, parameter measurement and quality control,
and development of an open community of biological engineers and
scientists. This has been added to
