How to create OpenOffice.org macros and
automation

There are times when you need to perform some task over and over, or when a task is complex enough that doing it manually makes it hard to get it right. OpenOffice.org macros allow you to save a sequence of operations with a single name so you can do the same thing repeatedly. Automation is a first cousin to macros. It lets another application control OOo and make things happen without user intervention.

Symbolic Composer 5.1 adds VRML2 macros

Symbolic Composer 5.1 adds VRML2 macros 09/23/2004 06:06 PM
Italian developer Tonality Systems announced on Thursday the release of Symbolic Composer 5.1 3D. The software combines traditional composition tools with more advanced features that enable you to turn music into 3D art with the help of the over 1,000 fractal and chaos mathematics-based algorithms included in the package. This upgrade adds VRML2 macros that "let the composer fuse together music and architecture," according to the company. VRML2 is the standard for displaying 3D images on the Web, which means this addition allows you to both construct 3D images based on music and compose music based on 3D images.

Formatting documents with OpenOffice.org
Writer macros
09/16/2004 09:13 AM
Around the time OpenOffice.org 1.1 RC was released, I was migrating a small company from Corel WordPerfect to OpenOffice.org. OpenOffice.org by itself does not support reading or writing WordPerfect files, but a tool called wpd2sxw can convert WordPerfect files to OpenOffice.org format (SXW). After conversion with wpd2sxw, which was rather good but had problems with some formatting features, I applied macros to documents based on different templates to make more than 2,000 converted documents look very similar to original WordPerfect files they were generated from. This article presents some macro "building blocks" you can use to modify a document's formatting or to generate well-formatted documents from plain text files.

OS X Keychain and Win XP Credential

06/23/2004 11:52 PM
Somebody asked me today why Windows XP doesn't have something like Mac OS X's Keychain: a secure, systemwide store for names and passwords. And then I remembered, dimly, that it does -- sort of. When XP came out, all the feature lists mentioned Credential Manager, which uses the Windows Data Protection API (DPAPI) to do something that sounds just like what the OS X Keychain does. On XP, you get to the Credential Manager like so: Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Manage my Network Passwords. ...

Anime keychain drives

Anime keychain drives 07/22/2004 02:31 AM
Gizmodo has the scoop on a line of Gundam-branded USB keychain drives.
To appeal to the "maniacs" (Japanese for "someone who knows too much,") IO Data has included two features for collectors of the drives - and I'm not making this up - by installing the included "Cute" software, your desktop wallpaper will automatically change to a corresponding Gundam wallpaper. When you take it out, it will go back to normal. The second feature is the screensaver, which when you purchase and use more than one of these drives, will add the respective characters to the ensuing action. You too can engage in intergalactic space combat for about $55 USD for a USB 2.0 mecha, or $45 for a USB 1.1 mecha.

Rubber duckie keychain drives

Rubber duckie keychain drives 12/08/2003 02:22 AM
This Japanese company is selling glowing rubber duckie USB keychain drives. Capacity caps out at 16MB -- someone should make a 1GB version of this. That plays MIDI jingles. And has a fingerprint-reader-based encryption scheme. You would be the coolest kid in the Internet cafe when you plugged in your fingerprint-reading lightup singing duckie and used it to transfer your ssh keypair-halves to gain acess to your cage. Seriously. Link (via Gizmodo)

Spin: Persistence of Vision Keychain
Watch
08/05/2004 10:52 AM

spinuser_ie.jpg image"Spin" is a persistence-of-vision keychain prototype that, when spun through the air like, say, a lasso, displays a clock face in the air. There are even three different display modes, including an 'analog' mode that displays a highlighted arc of the circle, with the leading edge indicating the current hour and the trailing edge indicating minutes.

There is talk of this design being picked up and mass produced by a couple of different companies; make that happen, boys, because I want it.
