What Basic Foodstuffs Do You Always Keep At Home For Delicious, Impromptu, Quick Emergency Meals? A well-stocked pantry/larder/fridge is essential for lazy cooks who can't be bothered to go out for fresh foods and yet are able (and like!) to throw together a wonderful repast at a moment's notice. Incredible New Ebay Phishing Mail

Incredible New Ebay Phishing Mail 06/24/2005 04:01 PM

ebay_small.gifThis is a bit off topic, but it's a fascinating study of what happens when Phishers get a book on Javascript.

First off, I don't specifically understand what's going on here. Ping me if you'd like to get the link and do some forensics. Essentially, you go to the typical locked-down Apache site with lots of fake Paypal material. It asks you to click another link and then you get some sort of strange mini-browser that causes your main browser to auto-supply your email and password. I stopped the script before it could do any harm, but clearly they are piggy-backing on a real site here.

The header of the mini-browser appears above. Click it to see the full screen. I wouldn't normally post these but this one was so unique and I haven't had my coffee yet. I got so freaked that I went and changed my Paypal password. I changed it to 1234.

UPDATE - Slashdot picked up the trail as did Bachelor Ben. Thanks, faceless horde!

Eldred Told Not To Hand Out Walden At
Walden Pond

Eldred Told Not To Hand Out Walden At
Walden Pond
07/19/2004 04:54 PM
Eric Eldred (of Supreme Court fame) recently went to Walden Pond to hand out free copies of David Thoreau's "Walden," which is very much in the public domain these days. He was quickly told to stop because he did not have a permit to hand out free books. The park supervisor claims they told him to leave because handing out free books might interfere with the business prospects of the "Shop at Walden Pond" which sells copies of the book. The executive director of the Thoreau Society, which runs the shop, didn't seem to mind, and the whole thing is somewhat farcical given the nature of "Walden" anyway.

Phishers Think Small

Phishers Think Small 06/05/2005 11:57 PM
Phishing has never been that much of an issue for me, because most of the phishing emails I've received have been for big name banks, where I don't have an account. The bank I do use is pretty small, which I figured made it highly unlikely to be a threat from phishers. Perhaps that assumption was wrong. Phishers have apparently tapped out the big name banks and are increasingly targeting lesser known banks and credit unions as they try to scoop up additional victims -- especially from banks and credit unions (and their customers) who figured they were pretty much immune to the problem. We should have known better... It's really a "security by obscurity" technique, like people who choose a less popular computing platform solely on the basis of "security," when that security may only be because it's less attractive to hackers. Of course, my second strategy in avoiding the problem probably has been working: I pretty much ignore all of the emails from my bank as they tend to just be "spam" marketing anyway.

Since I've been using the Powerbook (which I still need to replace with a newer one now that the "speed bump" is official), I've drastically changed my e-mail habits (personal mail, not work mail). In doing so, I wonder if I'm unusual in this respect. Previously, I was using mutt for e-mail on my IBM Thinkpad running Linux. If you've not tried it, mutt is really the king of all console-based mail programs. It excels at making it very easy...

Phishers Using Cash For Bait

Phishers Using Cash For Bait 03/22/2005 05:03 PM
Someone should do a study on the way the various phishing scams have evolved over time. From the original, poorly worded spam messages trying to get people to give up their bank account or credit card info to very slick replicas that currently go out and even on to mixing and matching 419 scams with phishing scams, it appears that those involved with phishing attacks keep adjusting. That's probably because the scam seems to be runnin g dry in a few places. The latest trick is to try to appeal to a surfer's greed, rather than just fear that something is wrong with their account. A new set of phishing emails are offering up cash in exchange for giving away your info -- though, of course, no one ever sees the cash (if anything, they see less of it in their own accounts). However, given the fact that many people will hand over their passwords in exchange for a chocolate bar, a pen, or a friendly smile, is it any wonder that offering a few dollars seems to make people give away their bank accounts?
