FTC Legalizes Porn Spam - Expect Plenty
FTC Legalizes Porn Spam - Expect Plenty
04/13/2004 02:10 PMThe latest move by our government to legitimize spam by simply adding
rules that tell you how to spam properly, is this decision by the FTC
that
all
porn spam must be labeled to say "SEXUALLY-EXPLICIT" (capital
screaming required?). Also, such spam cannot contain "graphic
material." In other words, porn spammers have just been told it's
okay to spam. This should pretty much guarantee that we all start
receiving a lot more pornographic spam - though, easily labeled so
that anyone glancing over your shoulder (assuming you don't use
filters) to check out your inbox will immediately see
"SEXUALLY-EXPLICIT" everywhere. I'm a bit surprised they're doing
this, considering the recent ridiculous crackdown on "indecency." Not
that I have a problem with anyone viewing whatever porn they want -
but it should be their choice, and not forced upon them by spammers.

Porn Spam Is Washed Up
05/24/2004 05:37 PMThe latest study on spam trends appears to show that
financial spam is outpacing pharmaceutical spam
- though, honestly, so much of both is coming out that it's really
hard to imagine that this matters at all. Meanwhile, it seems that
porn spam is increasingly less interesting to spammers as the numbers
have been on a noticeable decline for quite some time. No matter
what, though, it appears that CAN-SPAM has done absolutely nothing to
slow down the amount of spam sent.

06/05/2004 07:31 PM I am now getting 2,000+ spams a day. There are 1,440 minutes in a day
The rate of incoming spams is therefore getting close to the interval
it takes me to check my email and dispose of a single spam: By the
time I'm done checking, more spam has arrived. That is the point at
which the spam droplets form a continuous stream. And that is the
point at which no interval of my life will ever be spam-free again....

Brave New Gamer World
“ ‘We've got an entire group
of people under age 30 who grew up playing video games,’ said
Jim Gee, professor in the UW-Madison School of Education. ‘It's
completely changing the way people think about education and the
workplace.’
This ‘gamer generation’ includes
some 90 million people in the U.S. alone, ages 15 to 35. In fact,
sales of video games have now surpassed sales of TVs, DVDs and
CDs
.
A host of new data is suggesting that video games
have created a new generation of employees and executives, bigger than
the baby boomers, who will dramatically transform the
workplace.
Researchers like John C. Beck and Mitchell Wade,
authors of the book ‘Got Game: How the Gamer Generation is
Reshaping Business Forever’ argue that managers who understand
and harness this generation's distinct attributes will leap far ahead
of the competition.
Beck and Wade say these 90 million rising
professionals, through sheer numbers, will inevitably dominate
business and are already changing the rules. Although many of the
changes are positive, such as more open communication and creative
problem solving, they have caused a generation gap that frustrates
gamers and the boomers who manage them

Don't expect to use your branded GSM

06/14/2004 08:09 AMI have a GSM telephone by T-Mobile and when I went overseas this
time I took it with me figuring I could pop a sim card into it and use
it in the country I was visiting. Turned out since the phone was a
branded one it was locked out from being able to be used in another
country. I found a unlock code for it on a website and weighed using
it but decided against it.
Instead I bought a cheap phone and will use that on future travels.
The true test will be when I get back and try the Sim from T-Mobile in
the new phone. It seems a group of consumers are pissed of about this
lockout feature and are suing to force companies to unlock the phones
we buy.
I must admit that in the United States I do not see cell phones
for-sale stand-alone seems most are branded. As consumers become more
educated this will change. [

If Bush can't deal with allies, how can

If Bush can't deal with allies, how can
we expect him to run a war?
03/11/2003 01:59 PMNoted neoconservative Fred Kaplan has a
great article in Slate where he asks the question
that so many others are asking:
If the administration lacks the acumen or persuasive
power to deal with such familiar institutions as the U.N. Security
Council or the established governments of France, Germany, Turkey,
Russia, China—even Canada—then how is it going to handle Iraq's
feuding opposition groups, Kurdish separatists, and myriad
ethno-religious factions, to say nothing of the turbulence throughout
the region?
Kaplan concludes, as do I:
It is becoming increasingly and distressingly clear
that, however justified the coming war with Iraq may be, the Bush
administration is in no shape—diplomatically, politically, or
intellectually—to wage it or at least to settle its aftermath. It is
hard to remember when, if ever, the United States has so badly handled
a foreign-policy crisis or been so distrusted by so many friends and
foes as a result.
I wonder what it means for such
a noted neocon to come out against the Bush administration on the
fundamental issue of competence. Maybe the Republican wall in
front of Bush will finally crack, and Republican legislators will put
their duty as citizens in front of their party loyalties. One can
always hope.
I highly recommend the article , even if it is in Slate.

04/18/2005 08:24 AMAmong DVD+R/-R discs of varying speeds, 16x discs will account for the
largest portion in terms of shipment in beginning the third quarter of

80%-90% currently, with the remaining 10%-20% being 16x discs produced
by no more than five leading makers, the makers indicated. Although
the global demand for DVD discs is increasing as reflected on orders
received, second-tier makers in Taiwan have offered lower prices to
compete for 8x and 4x DVD+R/-R discs.

Who's Surfing Internet Porn? Might Not
Be Who You Would Expect
01/02/2004 02:30 PMA recent study from Nielsen/NetRatings has found that, despite the
general perception of who is surfing porn sites,
one-third of porn site visitors are women. The article
doesn't go into details, so it's unclear how they defined "porn sites"
and how they measured this. They do quote one woman who claims that
"you can get both education and inspiration" from the sites. So,
maybe that's the defense schools and libraries should use for not
filtering the internet: it's "educational" (yes, I'm joking). Anyway,
I don't think it's all that surprising that there are women who like
porn (studies have shown that before), but I'd say the details of the
study need to be explained a bit more before people go jumping to
conclusions.
