Oil Markets
Oil Markets
03/31/2005 12:35 PMReuters. This Goldman
Sachs forecast seems to be in line with my earlier "
window of vulnerability in the oil market"
analysis. If anyone has access to the full report, please
send it on. Welcome aboard!
Goldman Sachs said in a
research report on Thursday that oil markets have entered a
"super-spike" period that could see prices rising as high as
$105 a barrel. "We believe oil markets may have
entered the early stages of what we have referred to as a "super
spike" period -- a multi-year trading band of oil prices high enough
to meaningfully reduce energy consumption and recreate a spare
capacity cushion only after which will lower energy prices return,"
Goldman's analysts wrote. Goldman's Global Investment Research
note also raised the bank's 2005 and 2006 NYMEX crude price forecasts
to $50 and $55 respectively, from $41 and $40. Hot Markets for CRM (NewsFactor)

Are markets social?
03/08/2004 11:12 PMScott Kirsner in The Boston Globe (link will break tomorrow) writes
about companies trying to enhance eBay. His lead example is a
storefront operation run by AuctionDrop that operates as a consignment
shop: You bring in your old goods, they place them on eBay, you split
the winnings. It sounds like a cool idea until you get to the final
paragraphs of the piece: Their 75 employees and 20,000 square feet of
warehouse space brought in $1.3M in revenues last year. Ulp. Scott
cites other companies that have failed, sometimes because eBay sued
them into failure. An eBay spokesperson says:...

Markets are (unpaid) conversations
08/19/2004 07:12 PMBlogversations matches bloggers with advertisers. As far as I can tell
from the not-enough-informational site, the blogger writes about some
topic the advertiser suggests and gets paid for it. It's clear from
the site's defensive writing, however, that Blogversations knows its
project is in danger of being misunderstood ... or, perhaps,
understood. Unclear from the site: Is the fact that the bloggers are
getting paid made apparent? And where do these "conversation" occur?
Unfortunately, there's no obvious way to get more information about
what Blogversations is proposing except by registering. By the way,
their phrase "markets are discussions" sounds oddly...

Belkin Markets Via Web Interception
11/11/2003 01:10 AMA clever fellow discovered that his Belkin router was marketing a
Belkin service to him through Web redirection: If you're using any
Belkin gateway that offers its fee-based Parental Control Web Content
Filter, it apparently intercepts a Web request every eight hours to
show you an ad for that service. Belkin has apologized on home page,
but hasn't seemed to own up to precisely what they did. A firmware
upgrade will remove the "feature."...
