Chris is Available on Thursday

Chris is Available on Thursday

Chris is Available on Thursday 03/14/2005 06:07 PM

Chris Barr Is Available On Thursday: I don't even know how to explain this.

Who? Chris Barr is a graduate student in the Department of Media Studies at the University at Buffalo.

What? Chris will perform the actions and events scheduled for him by the users of this web site.

Where? In and around Buffalo, NY.

Some of the things people have scheduled are pretty interesting.

Chris should attempt to do a handstand for as long as possible. Walking around on his hands is an added bonus. As this shouldn't last an hour, he should have the new Mars Volta ablum playing so that he can listen to it for the remainder of the hour.

This is a GrokNews Entry: (what is grok?)

The Open Space went very, very well: Strangers engaged in open-ended, organically directed conversations. As for my long talky part, lord knows how it went. Catfight Thursday

Catfight Thursday 09/02/2004 05:33 PM

Why is it Catfight Thursday you ask? Well, for one, Apple's taking swipes at Microsoft's new MSN Music Service:

"It's biggest problem may be that its downloaded songs can not play on the iPod," said Eddie Cue, Apple's vice president of applications.

Gates fires back regarding Microsoft's focus on portable video:

"Ask kids in the back of a car on a two-hour trip, 'Hey, would you like to have your videos there?' My kids would," Gates said. "I guess Steve's kids just listen to Bach and Mozart. But mine, they want to watch 'Finding Nemo.' I don't know who made that, but it's really a neat movie."

Zing! (FYI, Steve Jobs is part owner of Pixar, producers of your kids' favorite fish movie) To get the fight really going, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer fired off a few rounds at Linux:

Finally, Ballmer argued that companies should be wary of the lack of indemnity from lawsuits, such as the suit filed by The SCO Group Inc. against DaimlerChrysler AG, IBM, Novell Inc. and others over parts of the Linux operating system that SCO claims infringe on elements of the Unix operating system that it owns.

"In the Linux world, nobody stands behind patent claims," he said, noting that Microsoft could be forced to swallow a $550 million judgement if it loses its ongoing case with Eolas Technologies Inc., but that its customers would be protected.

"I'm not trying to spread fear, uncertainty and doubt," Ballmer said. "I just think people should go out and research this for themselves."

In other words, "I'm not telling you not to use Linux, but for the love of God, don't do it". Stepping in on behalf of Linux, the SlashDot crowd covered both the high road:

It's interesting to note the arguments on grok law that an OS strategy might actually have *less* to fear than a closed-source one, compared to Mr Balmer's "It's not really FUD, honest" intellectual property FUD.

and (of course) the low road:

Linux to Ballmer:
"Please get off, you're crushing me, you sweaty bastard!"

I was hoping to complete the Griping Circle Of Life by finding a vitriolic rant on Apple co-opting open source for OSX, but that's a pretty fringe crowd, and they seem to have taken the day off. (I would have settled for a 'lack of Linux support with the iPod', but no dice there either) Bummer.

Religious Gadget Thursday: The E-Meter

Religious Gadget Thursday: The E-Meter 06/24/2005 04:02 PM

org_emeter.jpgOver a ball-breaking glass of Fantome Brise-Bonbons at Blind Tiger last night, I made a stunning revelation: I'm totally entranced by this Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes experiment. It has everything I could ever want from a news story: Potential brainwashing, aliens, ninjas (well, Tom was a samurai once, which is like a ninja with a bamboo fetish), and gadgets. One in particular: the 'e-meter,' or 'Electro-psychometer,' a "pastoral counseling device" used by the Church of Scientology to detect, among other things, the emotional state and thoughts of those attached to the device.

The original device was developed by Volney Mathison, a chiropractor, as an aid to psychotherapy, ironic considering the vehemence held by Scientologists against conventional psychiatric therapy. At heart, the e-Meters are based on the simple circuitry of the Wh eatstone Bridge, which measures resistance to current passed through a human body (or anything else that can be connected to the 'can' electrode probes, including vegetables). Scientology founder and principal prophet L. Ron Hubbard introduced the original e-meter in the '50s [pictured above], leading up to the 'Mark V,' which was the e-Meter of choice for the religion until the 'Mark VI' was released in the 80s, powered by an Intel 8051 microprocessor.

Find out more about the only electronic gadget that is also an official 'rel igious artifact' after the jump.

emeter_markv.jpgThe Mark V was not the very first e-Meter, but certainly enjoyed a long period of use. These models may still be found and purchased for a relatively inexpensive $200 or so, although to be used in official Church procedures, must undergo a yearly $150 certification process. E-Meters previous to the Mark V had been seized by the FDA.

emeter_mark6.jpgDeveloped in 1979, the Mark VI was the first major upgrade since the Mark V and was in use heavily, despite occasional technical inadequacies that caused some machines to break down. This e-Meter has a built-in clock.

emeter_mark7.jpgThe Super VII, developed in the late 80s, was reported to be much more reliable than the Mark VII, and featured the 'technical' precision to perform 'upper level auditing.' These units are no longer produced by Hubbard's Church, but can be found occasionally on eBay for between $300 and $900. Like all in-service e-meters, the Super VII must be sent in for an annual certification.

emeter_quantumsuper7.jpgThe Cadillac of current official offerings, the Quantum Super VII is the ultimate in e-meter artifacts, priced at over $4,500 new. From e-meter.org.uk's Quantum Super VII page, which may or may not be an official outlet of the Church: "Using the meter, the auditor ensures the process covers the correct area in order to discharge the harmful energy connected with that portion of the preclear’s reactive mind. When charge lessens, the person heightens his ability to think clearly in the area being addressed and his survival potential increases proportionately. As a result, the preclear discovers things about himself and his life – new realizations about existence, the milestones that mark his gains."

Since the design of the e-meter itself is relatively simple from an electronic standpoint, many third-party manufacturers have built generic models, including models that connect to PCs or PDAs for statistics monitoring and tracking. If you'd like to get more details about the variety of e-meters and e-meter clones available, check out Clearbird's fantasticly comprehensive All Meters: The E-Meter Supersite. For more information about the e-Meter's history and use, the Secrets of Scientology page by David S. Touretzky is equally thorough. The Church's official site is here.

And yes, this is probably the last 'Religious Gadget Thursday,' since, well, that's it.

Peter Caputa unveils one of his secret weapons.

How to make money from Events.

This is just the beginning of a new era - where smart entreprenuers like Peter show us how to make money from micro-content.

Congrats to Peter and the WhizSpark team!

No wonder he's been so busy. But NOT too busy to help start OpenEvents!

Here's Peter's post.....

Welcome to the Unveiling of WhizSpark's secret Sauce. Most of you have seen the social network - mailing list tools - event directory part of WhizSpark.

And then you thought... "Do they really think they will make any money from that site?". The answer is probably no. That won't pay the bills or bring us to our next liquidation event. Unless, of course, we follow the monetization path of Friendster and MySpace of littering your screen with ads.

So, what will?

(Take a deep breath b4 you read this next sentence)

We are providing incentivized viral word of mouth permission based email marketing and branded hosted event websites with social networking functionality as promotion services for event planners, venues, charitable organizations, political campaigns, business seminars, musicians, conferences, etc etc..

I was waiting until I could show it, to talk about it. Because it is obviously not that easy to explain.

We are pleased to announce our first 3 big events/sales:

Edd ie Kennison Foundation's Celebrity Fashion Show, Dinner, Silent & Live Auction, Comedy Show.

Wor mtownnightlife.com 2005 Madden VideoGame Tournament.

Red 1888's Model Search Competition by Spothound.com (R-rated)

So, if you know anyone that qualifies as a customer (see the aforementioned list above), please send me an email or them an email. We'd love some referrals.

And if you are interested in any of those events, let me know and I can hook you up.

Bollywood spoof ads, continued: mullet
pseudo-history
05/31/2004 01:05 AM
BoingBoing reader Chris points us to this blast from the online past:

"Another corporate '70s Bollywood spoof, this time by Absolut Vodka. ~10 minute film, made in 2002, filmed in India. It's a Bollywood pseudohistory of the mullet. Entertaining enough story (a little long...) - but really well-crafted, with awesome songs and dancing. Low-level product placement - no actual bottles or mention of vodka - but the familiar Absolut shape makes subtle appearances."

The film's hilarious, but -- OMGWTF! Do my own eyes betray me? Look closely at the faux promo poster screengrabbed at left. Is the male lead in Absolut Mulit not wearing a shirt with the exact same pink vomit print that Vivek Oberoi wears in the aforementioned Vanilla Coke Bollywood ad? Perhaps this is a secret, ironic reference to pink vomit couture featured in a real Bollywood film -- and I'm not enough of an Indian cinema buff to get the joke. If any intrepid BoingBoing readers know the answer, do tell.
Link to Absolut Mulit (Flash required), more background on the making of the 12-minute short in thi s 2003 issue of Fast Company magazine (scroll down to bottom of page).i>

George W. Bush, leading evangelist...
for Islam
07/30/2004 01:57 PM

Young people want to be powerful and imitate those whom they read about in the newspaper.  During George W. Bush's presidency, whom have they read about in the paper?  Osama bin-Laden, Saddam Hussein, Zacarias Moussaoui, Abu Musab Zarqawi, Muqtada al-Sadr, and the list goes on.  Nearly all of these guys are powerful take-charge ass-kickers.  Unlike the Gangsta Rappers whom kids were imitating in the 1990s, the Muslims in Western newspapers don't merely wave 9mm pistols out the windows of their SUVs.  These guys actually do manage to kill the people they hate, often by the thousands.

If George W. Bush had delegated the pushing aside of Saddam to an underling in the State Department or Defense Department and never mentioned the words "Iraq" or "Saddam" in any speech he might not have glorified being a pissed-off Muslim to such an extent.  But as it happens W. has given center stage to angry Muslims for the last three years.  This might encourage older folks with a lot of property to protect to become fearful, vote Republican, and give up their civil liberties in exchange for security.  But for young punks without much to lose one would think that the sight of all of these Arab bad-asses on TV would encourage them to convert to Islam and at least talk the talk if not actually walk the walk.  (According to this International Herald Tribune article, it is already happening in France, especially in the prisons where more than 50% of the inmates are Muslim.)
