2005 Bloggie Winners

2005 Bloggie Winners 03/14/2005 06:06 PM

You know something goes mainstream when it has its own goofy awards show. The winners of this year's Bloggie awards have been announced,

The Bloggies™ are a set of 30 publicly-chosen awards given to weblog writers and those related to weblogs.

A few of the winners are probably already the targets of your agregator's frequent attacks, but looking through the list of winners and runners-up seems like a great way to hear about some cool blogs you may have missed. I particularly enjoyed the 'Best Meme' and 'Best Tagline' categories (but I think our buddy dz should have been in the running for best tagline).

Gizmodo Wins 2005 Bloggie Award 03/14/2005 06:02 PM

gizmodo_bloggie.jpgIn the immortal words of our muse, Jerry Maguire, as played our thetans' muse, Mr. Tom Cruise, "You... complete us." We just got word from our man on the ground in Austin at SXSW (codename: COCKPARTS STOLED), that Gizmodo has been selected by voters in the 2005 Bloggie Awards as the winner of the 'Best Computers or Technology Weblog.' You guys are making us get a little bit weepy, which is bad for our circuits.

Congratulations to our brothers and sisters as well, as Defamer wins two Bloggies, including the very much deserved 'Best New Weblog' (the man makes an art of the buggery metaphor) and Wonkette brings home the 'Best Weblog About Politics' award, where the award was immediately offered a book deal.

Seriously, guys. Thanks so much.

Bloggie, bl0ggie, bl0ggie, bl0ggie etc.

Bloggie, bl0ggie, bl0ggie, bl0ggie etc. 02/01/2005 09:34 PM

It's Bloggie Nomination time again and I'm up for two awards this year - Best UK / Irish weblog and - gulp - lifetime achievement. And of course, typically, as soon as lots of people start linking to my site I can't think of anything whatsoever to say - total stage-fright. Given how slack I've been on my site this year, and how little I feel that I've managed to contribute to the ongoing debates and discussions around the web, I have to say I'm surprised by the nominations. But it's a nice feeling anyway. Thanks guys.

I'd like to say thank you to all the drunk people who nominated me in the first place. And to all the care-in-the-community folk they found to do the first-round judging - you guys are the best! Now all I need to do is to hope that the entire community of webloggers neglects to take their lithium before they vote. And with sublime confidence that this is precisely what will happen, I say to my design inspiration and creative motivator Derek Powazek and to my arch Gaybolian nemesis Ernie - bring it on!

But it's not all good news. Neither Ernie nor I are up for the gay weblogger award this year. Other notable absences include Sparky, Bravo and Simon. So now the torch must pass to How to Learn Swedish, SistersTalk, Tranniefesto, Troubled Diva and Hot Toddy's Toaster Oven. It's up to you guys now to keep up the tradition of bitchy ironic gay gang-fighting that we've established over the last four years. It's always been the most fun award to contest, even when the nominees aren't strictly gay.

So basically, I actually really like the Bloggies. I may as well just say it out loud. I mean, it's clear that there's a bit of a self-involved culture thing going on and yeah a block of the same people get nominated every year - but it doesn't take itself too seriously, the weblogs are interesting and often beautiful, and most importantly it's a set of awards that have emerged from within the culture of webloggers itself. It's not been imposed from outside, it's not about the weblog nation dancing for the 'real people' and it's not being judged by the criteria of another medium. I think it's cool. And Nikolai always makes the site look so nice. So in the spirit of discovery and investigation, here are my top new finds and nods to the classics that I've come across from flicking through some of the nominees:

  • Boudist
Up for best New Zealand / Australian weblog - beautiful design, enthusiastically written. Also currently suffering from stage-fright.
  • Weblog Wannabe
Up for best Asian Weblog and Lifetime achievement, Firda's been there since almost the beginning and her site gets more and more beautiful as time passes.
  • Noodlepie
Also up for Best Asian Weblog - and currently featuring some incredibly evocative pictures of a seafood street-stall. Mmm. Cockles.
  • Benn loxo du taccu
Interesting audioblog from West Africa references an expansive range of music.
  • Near Near Future
An awesomely insightful and cutting-edge glimpse into emerging and pervasive technologies that's up for the Best European Weblog award. Must win!
  • Hick's Design
A beautiful site that's in the Best British and Irish Weblog category with me.
  • Going Underground
Fascinating - if unattractive - weblog about the London Underground that everyone based around London should be reading.
  • Siteway Weekly
Up for best non-weblog content of a weblog site, featureing beautiful and classic design structures meshed with awesome illustrative work.
  • Tasting Menu
Slightly inelegantly designed, but rich and thorough insight into the experience and tasting of food.
  • The Food Section
Well assembled and thorough food news and restaurant review weblog.

PS. Vote for me!

How to Get a Bloggie

How to Get a Bloggie 04/09/2004 04:02 PM

Completely ignore your website for weeks on end, apparently.

Gosh, so much has been going on.

  • Textpattern, which is out in gamma, is helping itself to all available time. People seem to be using it, and liking it. Others are using it and wondering why it doesn’t do precisely what they want it to do; to these people I say give it time. Maybe lots of time. The tireless bughunters of the forum are my new best friends.
  • I designed wine labels for the new cave. These are going to the printer this week. Much of the 2003 wine is now in casks. it is excellent; I know because I’ve tasted it and, even to my bourbon-scorched palate, it is excellent. Noël has every reason to be proud. Some guy from Belgium came through last week and ordered 25,000 bottles.
  • At 37 years of age, I have gone from being the person who tucks his shirt directly into his trousers, to the person who prefers to completely undo his trousers, tuck in his shirt, then zip up again.
  • The dogs are constant. The dogs never, ever lay off.
  • I love Gail Armstrong more with every breath I take.

I'm up for a Bloggie

Hot on the heels of a top-ranking Lovemark, I just learned that this weblog's tagline is up for a 2004 Bloggie. At least I'm not up against the almighty Boing Boing again. Regardless, I'd like to wish good luck to Mighty Girl, Rhys Wynne, Sabrina Faire, and Tenth-Muse. May you all prove my tagline incorrect! *wink*...

Bloggie Howser, M.D.

Bloggie Howser, M.D. 03/24/2005 02:32 PM

After I posted about the DVD for season one of Doogie Howser, M.D. being the worst DVD release ever last week, a reader emailed me the following:

Remember how each episode of Doogie Howser ended with him typing a diary entry into his PC?

So ... he had an electronic journal that was read by millions. Not a particularly conventional distribution medium, but wouldn't that technically make him the first, if not among the first, blogger?

Awesome. Doogie, you trailblazer, I'm sorry I bashed you.

Update: I've gotten two emails about prior art on this. Pete asks if Mr. Belvedere would count since he wrote in a journal during every show, and J. Curtis believes that Captain Kirk was one of the first audio bloggers (or perhaps podcasters?) for doing his captain's log each episode.

Cory Doctorow: The 2005 Bloggie Awards are open for nominations! Last year, thanks to your generous votes, Boing Boing won four Bloggies, including Best Weblog. It was a stupendous honor to accept these awards on behalf of my co-editors, and I've got one of the certificates hanging beside my desk now; it gives me a good feeling every time I look at it. I've just done my nominating -- I hope you'll think of Boing Boing when you do yours. Link

Microsoft Corp. today announced availability of Visual Studio® 2005 Beta 2, Microsoft® .NET Framework 2.0 Beta 2 and the SQL Server (TM) 2005 April Community Technology Preview (CTP), the latest milestone in delivering these products to customers. Together, the products provide a deeply integrated development and data management platform, enabling customers to utilize existing skills and familiar tools to harness data in powerful new ways that increase productivity and efficiency. Several early adopters such as ABS-CBN Interactive, ORF and Townsend Analytics Ltd. have deployed these products in their production environments to reap the benefits of close tool and database integration. Because of broad customer demand to work with these prerelease products today, Microsoft also announced the Microsoft Go-Live license program for customers interested in deploying Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Express Edition immediately. Microsoft and multiple partners today also announced plans to provide customers with educational resources that will help them prepare for the launch of these two products.

MoveOn's Bush-in-30-Second campaign has announced its winners. They are in four categories, and each is brilliantly done. I hope the same is done by the other side, when the Democrats finally find a candidate. Because what's great about this is that it marks the real beginning of iPolitics -- bottom-up media made real. Citizen- bloggers and digital media -- when Madison finally returns to "Madison Avenue." I understand that RNC is confused about the nature of this campaign. No doubt the folks responsible for the RNC ghost-written letters to the editor were sure that there could only be a media effort if it was controlled and directed from the top, so that when 2 out of the thousand entries (not 2 out of the 15 finalists) mentioned Hitler, they thought that MoveOn must have sponsored that message. But now that that confusion has been cleared up, I hope they too will enlist the public to make the President's message clear. If they do, we've got the tools to help spread the messages far.

SCO: Winners and Losers

SCO: Winners and Losers 11/19/2003 11:49 AM
The end game in the SCO fiasco is at hand. IBM's dissection of SCO's discovery wish-list is covered in exquisite detail at Groklaw. As yesterday's conference call demonstrated, SCO's lawyers are being forced to make increasingly bizarre arguments to just stay in the game. The company's last substantive filing demanded that the court find the GPL invalid and unconstitutional, and all software released under the GPL in the last three years to be public domain. At this point, it appears the entire SCO case will devolve to the nuts and bolts of contract agreements between IBM and AT&T. If you believe that IBM lawyers are stupid and sloppy, and have been for the last 20 years, then you might believe SCO has a chance. I don't.
