Help MediaRights find music for
festival!
03/14/2005 06:06 PM

MediaRights, who run the Media that Matters Film Festival, has come across a licensing problem from one of its festival entries. The youth-produced flash animation Neglected Sky sponsored by Global Solutions uses the song Such Great Heights by The Postal Service in their animation, however, they only have a license to stream the song. MediaRights had planned to put the entire 5th festival on a DVD and distributes it under a Creative Commons license. They had some confirmation that they'd be able to license the music, but at the last minute, things fell through.

MediaRights now has five days to find replacement music for this piece and is looking to the commons for alternatives. Help MediaRights out: w atch the flash and listen to the music. If you know of any CC licensed music that sounds similar, drop MediaRights a line. They prefer an Attribution license or something that's in the public domain.

How Do You Find Good Music Online?

How Do You Find Good Music Online? 12/02/2003 12:14 AM
We've been arguing here for a long time that offering up music for free online is a great (free!) way for musicians to promote themselves. The problem, then, is what happens when lots of musicians follow through on such a plan and there's so much music out there that it's impossible to find what you like? The record labels would have you believe that's why they have A&R guys: to sort through the crap and provide you with the best of the best. Unfortunately, these days, the big labels aren't necessarily looking for the best of the best, but the most marketable to the widest possible audience. The way I find music is that I have a few friends whose musical tastes I trust. They know what I like, and when they say, "hey, you should check out this band," I usually do - and, more often than not, I'm happy I did. Building up those same sorts of "trusted recommender" systems online is possible, but not that easy. Part of the original promise of music sharing networks was that you could find those with similar tastes and look through their collections to find other artists you hadn't heard of - or better yet, communicate with the person directly to see who they might recommend. The record labels, of course, hate this idea, because it takes away their function, and puts promotions into the hands of just about anyone. I like this method much better than the "collaborative filtering" process that's becoming popular again - partly because the record labels can harness it themselves instead of leaving the recommending up to the riff raff. Collaborative filtering looks for all the people who are sort of similar to what you like and looks for other musicians they tend to like, but which you haven't rated yet. The problem here, again, is that it gets watered down. You're only discovering new acts after many others have, and some of the more obscure but great acts may get filtered out. Still, there are some intriguing new collaborative filtering tools that people are gravitating towards. The article discusses the relatively new iRATE radio which has been getting a lot of attention lately. It's basically an online jukebox that uses collaborative filtering to try to hone in on the music you like.

Find Duplicate Music Files 0.0.9n
(Default branch)
03/14/2005 06:20 PM
Find Duplicate Music Files detects music files that contain the same music, even if the files are differently named, and are in different formats such as MP3, OGG, WAV, WMA, M4A, and RealAudio and contain different or non-existent meta-information such as ID3 tags. The program operates on whole directories of music file at a time, or upon multiple directories. It analyzes them and outputs the filenames of pairs that seem similar.
Changes:
This release, 0.0.9n, uses Mplayer as a decoder for the various audio file formats. Now fdmf can detect that a pair of files contain the same music even if they are in different formats including any combination of MP3, OGG, WAV, WMA, M4A, and Realaudio. This release also fixes some minor bugs.

Webl0g Festival in Iran 06/15/2004 10:12 AM
Hossein Derakshan reports back from Iran's first Weblog Festival.
[Iranian Deputy I.T. Minister] Nassrollah Jahangard wished that every Iranian could have a blog one day and expressed the government's support for persian blogs which, in his mind, are defining the presence of Iran on the Net and make an identity for the Iranian community on the Internet. He also added that blogs are sort of cultureal heritage for Iran and they will make the future of it.

The latter, Sohrab Razeghi, said that blogs and the values they carry with themseves are the begining of a modern society in Iran. He said that the openness, subversiveness, and a sense of individualism which are visible among Iranian weblogs are completely new things in the society. he then rejected the idea of government support and said that they should leave the persian blogoshpere alone and let it go in whatever direction it wants.

Blue Bands for Blue Budgets

Blue Bands for Blue Budgets 02/01/2005 10:09 PM

I had to go all the way over to LISNews< /a> to find out that a sister Library System here in Illinois has started a totally awesome project called Libraries Matter. Here at home, our kids saved up some money to buy the 10–pack of Lance Armstrong yellow wristbands because they’re all the rage at school. Can you imagine if we could start something similar with these blue ones for libraries? Brilliant job, Alliance Library System!

One thing, though – how about offering packs smaller than 50 so that ordinary folks like myself can buy some and give them out to friends, kids, etc.? Let’s get some grassroots support going, not just top down from the institutional level! Then, let’s think about how we can use these on Advocacy Day this year.

Tangent: When visiting the ALS web site tonight, I realized they’ve added blogs to the home page (kind of, sort of). Sweet! Unfortunately, no RSS feeds to be found anywhere, which means I won’t be able to add them to my aggregator, which means I’ll have to keep relying on other web sites to highlight ALS projects for me. Not sweet. C’mon, ALS, show us the RSS!
