Philips Launches 16x Dual Layer DVD
Writer
06/22/2004 10:46 AMDetails are slim -- I couldn't even find a picture, although I'm
sure there's not much to see-- but Philips is pushing a new 16x DVD
writer into the market that supports the Dual Layer standard. Although
the news is clocking the burner at around six minutes per disc, I
suspect that rate is only for single-layer DVDs. The 8.5-gigabyte dual
layer burners from other manufacturers have been benchmarking much
more slowly, in the 20 to 30 minute range for a single disc. Cost
estimates are around $200-220 for consumers, and Dell is slated to
recieve the first batch. Still, fast, like a cheetah, or a monkey on a
cheetah. (Thanks, Jos!)

from CNN, who is now at Harvard on sabattical, has just launched a new blog about North Korea. It's an
cool experiment in blogging/journalism by someone who has a lot of
on-the-ground experience covering difficult topics like
this.
This is an experiment in interactive,
participatory journalism. And in the new age of internet web-blogging,
we are ALL journalists.
NKzone is NOT a conventional news or information website. Our
members will build NKzone collectively with unique, personal, and
(whenever possible) first-hand insights about the world's most
mysterious country. Please approach this site not as a "viewer" or
"reader", but as a "participant" and "contributor." NKzone is
non-partisan. It seeks to generate interest and debate about North
Korea. It seeks to include many clashing views. It is not advocating a
particular cause, other than the desire that people be better informed
about North Korea.

Antonio
Delgado, who gave me a personal guided tour of all things geeky in
Barcelona not long ago, sends word of a new addition to Spain's
growing blogosphere:
Mainly composed of weblogs, Filmica project was born to
become an open
platform devoted to the present and future of the film and TV
industries,
collaborating the dialogue and extracting the knowledge from the
information that is flowing on many spaces.
Each weblog is a personal site where authors freely write and comment
about
topics of their interest. Directors, producers, script-writers,
journalists, proffessionals and fans will have their weblog installed
and ready for them to write, freely. No computer skills required. At
this moment, Filmica.com is at beta stage, finishing some adjustments
and designs. The official opening is expected at the begining of 2004.
People interested to open a weblog in Filmica should send an e-mail to
weblogs@filmica.com, describing who the author is and what the
subject of the weblog will be. The proposals will be reviewed.
