Bill Gates' Robot will Watch Your Kids

Bill Gates' Robot will Watch Your Kids

Bill Gates' Robot will Watch Your Kids 03/14/2005 06:03 PM

The Swirling Brain and a few other readers sent in the weird robot news of the week from ABC News. It seems Bill Gates may be developing an army of evil robot teddy bears to watch over (and eventually raise?) your kids. If that isn't scary enough, the robot bear will monitor the child, providing video and audio online over a WiFi link. Microsoft's extensive security know-how will give your robot the same wonderful protection as your typical Windows OS, so you don't have to worry about the wrong people watching your child. There's also Slashdot coverage, which poses the question, "when it BSODs, will it take the kid with it?". Lest you think this is a joke, an MSNBC article includes a photo of the furry robot and mentions that its head will follow the childs movements around the room. The robot was revealed at Microsoft's Research Techfest 2005, a secretive internal event designed as a "corporate moral booster" for Microsoft's product research teams.

I get dozens of mailings from Microsoft every week, many of which are pure marketing drivel and quickly go to my trash folder. Occasionally, though, there are nuggets - such as the hands-on security labs I mentioned last week - that can prove useful. It happens rarely, though, and this week was no exception. Still, there was one note that deserves a closer look.

MP3 Players Aren't Just For Kids; In

MP3 Players Aren't Just For Kids; In
Fact They're Barely For Kids
12/19/2004 03:47 PM
The common bit of wisdom is that MP3s are a young person's technology. It's the teens and the folks just coming out of college that are the MP3 generation, after all, so they'd be the most likely to own an MP3 player, right? Not at all, apparently. A new study says that 90% of MP3 player owners over 34 years old. While this may have something to do with the high price of many of the best MP3 players, the numbers still don't seem right. It would be interesting to see the methodology behind this study. That's not to say that those over 34 aren't likely to own an MP3 player, but it's hard to believe that 90% of MP3 players go to those 35 and older.

Presents For Bad Kids Head To eBay,
Rather Than Kids
12/27/2004 04:42 AM
Well, normally, people wait until after they've received presents to dump them on eBay. However, one father who felt his three sons were being particularly bad lately decided that to punish them he's putting their presents up for sale on eBay. To be honest, this sounds like a bit of a publicity stunt -- and it seems likely that, now that this is getting attention, that casino that seems to be buying e very random quirky auction item will snap this one up. Update: Whoops. It's apparently already happened. Indeed, the casino in question has d ecided to buy the undelivered presents. This is sort of an update on our story last year about how sellers were increasingly looking to use eBay as a publicity generating tool. It appears that's now being used by buyers to generate publicity, as well.

Wireless Watch 2004: UbiButton Watch

07/22/2004 08:11 AM

wjdcm19l.jpg imageWIRELESS WATCH 2004 is going on in Japan until Friday, and there are plenty of new product demonstrations as well as those currently in development on display. This year's hot sheet includes NTT DoCoMo's "UbiButton," a device similar in form factor to a wristwatch. By detecting the shock waves in the arm created by a simple snapping of the fingers, a switch is flipped that can, for example, turn a light on and off. In other words, DoCoMo has glorified The Clapper to now be called The Snapper. Actually, I know a couple people that can't snap their fingers...what the hell are they supposed to do? [Uhm, clap? - ed] Other highlights from the convention included a working model of a Bluetooth pen, and DDI Pocket's "Jacketphone," a SD card sized PHS module. TechJapan has full Day 1 coverage, with pretty pictures.

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot? 12/18/2003 12:58 PM
It took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated, that some researchers are giving up on that idea and using Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs. However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out how to make a robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the robot run.

Microsoft downplays Gates' talk of
Nintendo
08/05/2004 10:39 AM
A German financial magazine, WirtschaftsWoche, reported Wednesday that Bill Gates said he was interested in buying video game giant Nintendo. Many Web sites and several news services picked up the report, and Microsoft Corp.'s public relations team shifted swiftly into gear for damage control and denial. Its corporate statement was that Microsoft did not comment on "rumors or speculation." Beyond that, the Microsoft view was clearly that the reported comments were out of context. The remark attributed to Gates was made during an informal cocktail reception after Microsoft's yearly financial analysts' meeting recently at the company's Redmond headquarters.
