Dyson DC15 'The Ball'

Dyson DC15 'The Ball' 03/14/2005 06:02 PM

dyson_ball.jpgUK suck whiz James Dyson has announced The Ball, a new vaccuum cleaner designed about what looks like a yellow plastic volleyball. The idea of the DC15 The Ball is to speed up cleaning by "getting rid of teh forwards/backwards motion," replacing it with a much more effecient 'forward to the left/backwards to the right' motion (or something). Since it's a Dyson, it'll be extremely expense, very effective, and look right at home taped to the underside of your X-Wing.

George Dyson talks about "Von Neumann's Universe." Von Neumann came from Hungary and was appointed to Princeton during the Depression. In the office above him was Kurt Goedel who was stuck in a Catch 22 trying to emigrate. The Germans finally allowed Goedel to leave Austria once they realized he wasn't a Jew, but he got classified as an enemy alien by the US because Germany had conquered Austria. In 1943 he finally got his US citizenship and was immediately drafted. Goedel was, however, paranoid. He would only eat food off his sister's plate because he was worried about being...

dyson_DC11.jpg imageI don't know when they hit U.S. retail channels, exactly, but it looks like the Dyson DC11 'Telescope' vacuum is now available in the U.S. Amazon has it for $500. The idea behind Dyson vacuums is that a bagless 'cyclone' section continually provides suction separate from the filter and collection so that collected dust and dirt doesn't clog up the airflow. Guess it is the DC11 I've been seeing on bus stops and not the DC08. Also, I have no idea if they're any good -- I just like them because they're yellow.

When is 'The Matrix'? 11/05/2003 04:50 PM
We all know the answer to the question, "What is the Matrix?" but with the release of Matrix Revolutions, some people are speculating on the question "When is the Matrix?". Using dates found or hinted at in all three movies and the Animatrix short films, a complete timeline has been pieced together. From the first humanoid robots sometime after 2010, to their revolt and eventual victory over the armies of man in 2098, the timeline tells the whole story of AI and robots vs man.

Samsung's VC-RP30W Robotic Vacuum

Samsung's VC-RP30W Robotic Vacuum 12/02/2003 12:23 AM
Several News agencies such as MobileMag have declared: Samsung Unveils High-tech Robot Vacuum Cleaner Samsung's robotic vacuum cleaner, identified as VC-RP30W, vacuums your house the smart way: it makes a 3D map and knows which areas of your house needs cleaning. This is contrary to a recent article that says mapping less is better. This is also contrary to popular robotic vacuums that just bounce around your house unwittingly with hopes of eventually vacuuming all the floor. This robot is no dummy. The battery life lasts about 50 minutes a charge and when the battery gets low, it goes back automatically to the charging station for a recharge. You can program it to your desired start times to start when you're away, and you can even monitor the vacuum from work doing its work with an internet connection and its internal camera. With all this robotic intelligence and obvious great design and crafting, you can guess why there's no mention of price or availability yet, but with camera, internet connection, charging station, etc, I don't expect it to be as cheap as a Roomba but at least it's got to be some kind of world's first great vacuum cleaning robot for Samsung!

Movie review: The Aviator

Movie review: The Aviator 12/22/2004 01:49 AM

Even if you're a pilot it is tough to recommend the new movie The Aviator.  Despite its ponderous length the story seems told in a very sketchy manner.  Hollywood seems to have forgotten what Homer demonstrated in the Iliad:  Epic works best when told in medias res ("in the middle of the thing").  Attempting to cover decades of events in 169 minutes results in raising more questions than can be answered.  It might have been a better film if it had covered just the years in which Hughes lived with Katherine Hepburn, for example.  The flying and engineering scenes were not very accurate.  One thing that was horrifyingly accurate was the crash of the XF-11 reconnaissance plane (backg round).  If you have a multi rating this will bring back some memories of your instructor cutting off the fuel to one engine and the resulting yaw.  In the case of the XF-11, however, it was designed so that a loss of oil pressure would result in one of the props going into reverse pitch and producing so much drag that one couldn't hold altitude on the remaining engine.  It would be interesting to know why the plane even had the ability to reverse pitch; a recon plane wouldn't have needed to land on short runways and use the engines for braking.

Airplane nerds will enjoy http://www.planeandpilotmag.com/content/2005/jan/howard_hughes.ht ml, which makes it clear that nearly all of Hughes's crashes were due either to failure to preflight/plan or failure to "plan the flight and fly the plan".

Incredibles"

A pilot's review of the movie "The
Incredibles"
12/17/2004 06:36 PM

Inspired by David Letterman's bringing a dentist from New Jersey to review the epic film "Reds", here is an airplane nerd's review of "The Incredibles":

Elastigirl is flying an airplane right at the top of a cloud layer, more or less in and out of the clouds, and calls an air traffic control facility saying that she is "VFR on top".  Visual Flight Rules would generally require at least 1000' of clearance above the top of any cloud and 2000' horizontally from clouds.

[The dentist's sole comments on Reds related to the fact that the dental work visible on screen was anachronistic and not representative of what dental care would actually have been like in early 20th century Russia.  If you do see the Incredibles, look for a scene in which the wife is upset at the idea that her husband is cheating on her and then gets slapped a few times by a fashion designer.  This scene was animated by my cousin Doug Frankel.]

Backyard mecha

Backyard mecha 12/24/2004 12:29 PM
David Pescovitz: Cnwk.1D I Ne P 2004 Neomecha2 500X667Carlos Owens, a 26-year-old steelworker who lives near Anchorage, Alaska is building a "mobile suit gundam," a robotic exoskeleton, in his backyard. From a CNET report:
"This is a concept that's been around for a long time," Owens said in a telephone interview. "But I'm not going to wait for the other guy to come out and make it when I've got the capability to do it myself."

When completed, the idea is for the pilot to be able to strap himself into a central, padded compartment, and then control the mecha with the motions of his own body. When the pilot walks, the mecha walks. Raise an arm and open a hand, and the mecha does the same, with 46 possible movements planned.

Owens said he can't afford top-of-the line equipment, like infrared sensors and electronics that would govern the motion. Instead he's using a hydraulic system to transfer the motion of his limbs to the larger structure, and a gas engine mounted on the back to generate the power needed. In all, the system can exert about 3,500 pounds per square inch, or more than enough to set his ton and a half creation in motion, he said.

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
03/22/2005 05:03 PM
Yesterday we noted that the MPAA and movie theater owners were whini ng about how much people coming in an taping movies was hurting their business. The obvious response, we pointed out, is to recognize that going to the movies is a social experience. It's not just about the content (though, that is important), but the overall experience. If they improved that, then people would want to go -- even if they could score the same movie off the internet or a cheap DVD bought off the street. While the folks in Hollywood refuse to entertain this idea, someone (anonymously) in the comments to that story pointed to an article in China noting that this is exactly what Chinese movie theaters have done. After years of declining attendance, they finally shaped up and made going to the movies cool again. They improved the overall experience, putting in better equipment and more comfortable seats. They improved the sound and the lighting as well. It sounds like they also made some theaters to be more like bars, to help attract young adults away from traditional bars. Yet the supposedly "creative" movie people in Hollywood insist "nothing can be done" to get people into the theater.
