Compare And Contrast Blogs And Reuters
On Joe Trippi's Speech

Compare And Contrast Blogs And Reuters
On Joe Trippi's Speech
02/10/2004 02:41 AM
Want to see an example of spin? No matter what your politics are, it's interesting to note the vastly different takes the established media and some bloggers have on this morning's talk by Joe Trippi at O'Reilly's Emerging Technologies Conference. This morning I read the detailed notes from both Howard Rheingold and Ross Mayfield on Trippi's speech - which sounded interesting, if a bit unfocused. However, both sets of notes show that he clearly talked up the power of the internet while trashing the established "broadcast" media. So, when Reuters - a member of the broadcast media - writes up their own article on the talk, they spin it 180 degrees, and say that Trippi blamed the internet for the campaign's problems. The notes from the blogging attendees say Trippi called the campaign a "dot com miracle", and yet Reuters claims Trippi said the internet "hobbled" the campaign. These differing accounts of the same exact speech don't match at all - and it certainly looks like Reuters is the one doing the spinning here, taking a few quotes here and there out of context to make their point. With the bloggers' notes, you can see the context of what's being spoken about, and the Reuters report gives none of that. I'm not one who believes that bloggers are a "threat" to journalism, but the contrast here shows a perfect (if a bit scary) example of just how easy it is for the press to spin things to make their point.

Marcus P. Mr. Zillman will be showing these new resources live on the Internet and how they will relate to helping you search and find the information you require for both personal and academic research. His presentations are designed both for the “newbie” to Internet searching as well as the seasoned “Internaut”. The Internet continues to change at a record pace, and discovering the latest tools to make your Internet search both easy and competent is the goal of this presentation. Will eMail soon be replaced by RSS and news aggregators? Are blogs, currently the fastest growing area of the Internet, a fad or will they change the entire Internet landscape? These and other questions will be discussed during this presentation by one of the Internet’s pioneers and bot and artificial intelligence experts, Marcus P. Zillman. The Internet Is A Communications
Platform, Not A Content Platform

The Internet Is A Communications
Platform, Not A Content Platform
03/19/2005 03:17 AM
It seems that any time you hear someone saying they're trying to reach the "middle ground" on an argument, you might want to suspect their motives. That was the case a few months ago when some think tank wanted to reach a middle ground on file sharing, which was really a thinly veiled explanation for why the entertainment industry should control the internet. We've now got another one, which is even scarier. TheRegister has published an excerpt from a paper supposedly about "media literacy" which claims its looking for a " middle ground" between "etopians" who want the internet to remain open and the regulate and control crowd who want to ban and filter everything. However, the conclusions are anything but a middle ground. They're saying that people are stupid and can't handle the internet as is, and that there should be a separate internet that is more like TV, with acceptable providers handling the content, and acting as the guides to all the content out there. This is mischaracterizing the debate. It's not a middle ground at all, but a fairly radical solution. There's already a TV out there. This is designed from the wrong mindset. The internet is not a content platform, but a communications one. This article flips that around and assumes that it's a content platform -- for the sake of the content providers.

Pure VoIP Won't Be Regulated, Phone-Like
VoIP Might Be

Pure VoIP Won't Be Regulated, Phone-Like
VoIP Might Be
02/12/2004 02:16 PM
As expected, the FCC ruled on the Pulver VoIP petition today, and gave something of a split decision. They claim that "pure" VoIP systems shouldn't be regulated, since they're just like email or any other internet application. However, they're reserving judgment on VoIP systems that more resemble regular phone service, such as Vonage that touch on the PSTN. This seems like something of a cop out, and may be difficult to sustain over time. Most of the "pure" VoIP systems are offering (or planning to offer) gateways that let them connect to the telephone system. Where do they fall along the regulatory spectrum? This would take away the incentive of VoIP providers to connect to regular phone service, creating two different levels of phone service, rather than connecting the two and leading to a more orderly migration. Of course, it still remains to be seen what sorts of regulations they will include for PSTN-connected VoIP. Chances are, they're talking about adding in 911 service and phone-tapping abilities.
