Compare And Contrast Blogs And Reuters
On Joe Trippi's Speech
02/10/2004 02:41 AMWant to see an example of spin? No matter what your politics are,
it's interesting to note the
vastly different takes the
established media and some bloggers have on this morning's talk by Joe
Trippi at O'Reilly's Emerging Technologies Conference. This morning I
read the detailed notes from both
Howard
Rheingold and
Ross
Mayfield on Trippi's speech - which sounded interesting, if a bit
unfocused. However, both sets of notes show that he clearly talked up
the power of the internet while trashing the established "broadcast"
media. So, when Reuters - a member of the broadcast media - writes up
their own article on the talk, they spin it 180 degrees, and say that
Trippi blamed the internet for the campaign's
problems. The notes from the blogging attendees say Trippi called
the campaign a "dot com miracle", and yet Reuters claims Trippi said
the internet "hobbled" the campaign. These differing accounts of the
same exact speech don't match at all - and it certainly looks like
Reuters is the one doing the spinning here, taking a few quotes here
and there out of context to make their point. With the bloggers'
notes, you can see the context of what's being spoken about, and the
Reuters report gives none of that. I'm not one who believes that
bloggers are a "threat" to journalism, but the contrast here shows a
perfect (if a bit scary) example of just how easy it is for the press
to spin things to make their point.

emphasis on the growing areas of bots and intelligent agents, blogs
(weblogs), and news aggregators. Mr. Zillman will be showing these new
resources live on the Internet and how they will relate to helping you
search and find the information you require for both personal and
academic research. His presentations are designed both for the
“newbie” to Internet searching as well as the seasoned
“Internaut”. The Internet continues to change at a record pace,
and discovering the latest tools to make your Internet search both
easy and competent is the goal of this presentation. Will eMail soon
be replaced by RSS and news aggregators? Are blogs, currently the
fastest growing area of the Internet, a fad or will they change the
entire Internet landscape? These and other questions will be discussed
during this presentation by one of the Internet’s pioneers and bot

The Internet Is A Communications
Platform, Not A Content Platform
The Internet Is A Communications
Platform, Not A Content Platform
03/19/2005 03:17 AMIt seems that any time you hear someone saying they're trying to reach
the "middle ground" on an argument, you might want to suspect their
motives. That was the case a few months ago when some think tank
wanted to
reach
a middle ground on file sharing, which was really a thinly veiled
explanation for why the entertainment industry should control the
internet. We've now got another one, which is even scarier.
TheRegister has published an excerpt from a paper supposedly about
"media literacy" which claims its looking for a
"
middle ground" between "etopians" who want the internet to remain open
and the regulate and control crowd who want to ban and filter
everything. However, the conclusions are anything but a middle
ground. They're saying that people are stupid and can't handle the
internet as is, and that there should be a separate
internet that is
more like TV, with acceptable providers handling the content, and
acting as the guides to all the content out there. This is
mischaracterizing the debate. It's not a middle ground at all, but a
fairly radical solution. There's already a TV out there. This is
designed from the wrong mindset. The internet
is
not a content platform, but a communications one. This
article flips that around and assumes that it's a content platform --
for the sake of the content providers.

Pure VoIP Won't Be Regulated, Phone-Like
VoIP Might Be
Pure VoIP Won't Be Regulated, Phone-Like
VoIP Might Be
02/12/2004 02:16 PMAs expected, the FCC ruled on the Pulver VoIP petition today, and gave
something of a split decision. They claim that
"pure" VoIP
systems shouldn't be regulated, since they're just like email or
any other internet application. However, they're reserving judgment
on VoIP systems that more resemble regular phone service, such as
Vonage that touch on the PSTN. This seems like something of a cop
out, and may be difficult to sustain over time. Most of the "pure"
VoIP systems are offering (or planning to offer) gateways that let
them connect to the telephone system. Where do they fall along the
regulatory spectrum? This would take away the incentive of VoIP
providers to connect to regular phone service, creating two different
levels of phone service, rather than connecting the two and leading to
a more orderly migration. Of course, it still remains to be seen what
sorts of regulations they will include for PSTN-connected VoIP.
Chances are, they're talking about adding in 911 service and
phone-tapping abilities.
