We make websites, too 03/14/2005 05:59 PM

Since I didn't design it and only helped a little bit in building it, I can give the team my unfettered praise: The new Six Apart site looks great. Nice work, team, and thanks for doing such a nice job on the Professional Network that's near and dear to my...

The best online poker websites have become the best training grounds for the world's top poker players and future poker stars. 2003 World Series Of Poker Champion Chris Moneymaker shocked the Las Vegas establishment and world with his domination of the 2003 ESPN WSOP Championships at Binion's Horseshoe Casino. Yet his Cinderella story was anything but a rags to riches tale. Chris Moneymaker honed his skills and paid his dues like so many other modern day players that participate daily in the best online poker tournaments, satellite competitions and world wide poker websites. http://www.MonteCarloGrandResort.com [PRWEB Jul 21, 2004]

Apologies for letting my current frustration hit you in all their boredom. The screenshot you can see to the right is what the B of A site gave me back after 15-20 minutes of clicking to get a new account. I even used FireFox to avoid any trouble if they didn't support Safari! "runtime error 800a01a8". Idiots. Alright, so sometimes a database is out of order at 3am or whatever, but what happened to showing a useful error message? "Object...

Websites Who Want To Remain Bad

Websites Who Want To Remain Bad 07/20/2004 12:40 PM
Sometimes you have to wonder what certain companies or organizations are thinking. A few years ago, when Ellis Island put their records online, they had a dreadful interface. A genealogist with the skill and the time, created a new, much more user friendly front end that quickly became the preferred way for many genealogists to search the site. Of course, Ellis Island then threatened to sue him to shut down the site. The same thing seems to be playing itself out over in the UK, where someone who had problems with Odeon Cinemas' website built a better version (one that would actually work in non-IE browsers). For his troubles in helping them completely for free and bringing more business to them, he received a cease and desist letter. No wonder no one wants to help anyone out any more. You might get sued.

Don't Visit Websites With Microsoft IE

Don't Visit Websites With Microsoft IE 06/25/2004 02:33 AM
It really is getting ridiculously dangerous these days for anyone to keep using Microsoft IE. People always talk about the day when scammers will start to use "zero day exploits" to smash through security holes before they're patched, and that's clearly already happening. The latest move, which is fairly advanced (and many assume is being done by organized crime groups in Eastern Europe) is to hack into a variety of popular company websites and install some code to exploit a known IE vulnerability that has not been patched by Microsoft. Once this is done, any IE user visiting any of these websites (which they obviously would assume to be safe based on the companies involved) ends up with some of the most insidious keylogging spyware. The article won't list the companies, but from the descriptions they sound like sites anyone might visit on a regular basis (banks, auction sites and comparison shopping engines). This sounds quite similar to the Interla nd hack from last year, but could impact many more users.

Do You Click Randomly On Websites?

Do You Click Randomly On Websites? 09/08/2004 02:29 PM
In a new study about web-use behavior, one of the more interesting findings was that people tend to click a lot on websites -- and they're not talking about links. People just click within a website. While the snippet linked here doesn't suggest a reason why, I definitely do this, so I can at least explain my thought process. There are two reasons why I click on non-linked parts of websites as I read. First, and probably most importantly, is to make sure the browser I'm reading is recognized as the active window. Too often, even if it's the top window, what I'm reading won't be recognized as the active window, causing problems when I scroll. The second reason, is that I often highlight what I'm reading, partly to keep my place and also to keep me focused on the text I'm reading. There are plenty of websites that don't seem to allow this sort of activity (blocking the ability to highlight or, worse, linking whitespace off to some other page), so it's important that designers start to take into account how people read their pages. The article also notes that many people seem to click on photographs, even when they don't link to anything -- and suggests that site designers may want to start making all photos linked to larger versions (though, that assumes the reason people click is to see a larger version).

UK Websites Going Into National Archive

UK Websites Going Into National Archive 11/04/2003 03:39 PM
Over in the UK, legislation has been passed to preserve UK websites in the National Archive. Sounds like a huge, but worthwhile project. It's a little unclear how they're going to go about this (or even if they know how they're going to go about this), but it would seem like the sort of thing where it would make sense to team up with someone like Brewster Kahle who's already working on similar projects for the Internet Archive. Part of the deal in making this happen was that publishers agreed that timely information (that often costs money) will be available after a three month period. In other words, financial info that normally is hidden will become available in this archive after it's no longer so timely.
