Peer to Peer
Politics Here's an idea the RIAA can get behind:
Thad
Anderson, a second-year student at St. John's School of Law, has
launched a peer-to-peer network that allows users to access and share
government documents.
More than 600 court and government documents, including memos,
communications and reports, are available on his OutragedModerates.org
site, and can be accessed through the Kazaa, LimeWire and Soulseek P2P
networks.
Among those documents available are the Abu Ghraib prison scandal
memos and the Senate Intelligence Committee report on government
intelligence leading up to the Iraq War. The concept of using a P2P
network to share embarrassing documents is interesting ... considering
some in Congress have proposed an outright ban on the P2P file sharing
systems that are widely used to trade music, movies and porn.

08/30/2004 12:08 PMRepublicans gathering in New York are doing their best to appear
"compassionate" and "mainstream." Rudy, McCain, and Arnold will be
everywhere this week, while Tom DeLay does his best disappearing act.
But even some Republicans aren't buying the GOP's "extreme makeover,"
to borrow Ed Gillespie's rap on the Democrats repeated ad nauseum in
Boston.
Rebecca moderates the Japan panel
Rebecca moderates the Japan panel
01/23/2004 02:18 PM
Rebecca
MacKinnon is moderating a Japan panel this year.
Last year, when I was on a Japan panel
and MC'ing
the Japan dinner, Japan was still looking dismal and my role as
risk taking agitator was a good card for the Japanese to play to try
to show that they were trying to change.
This year, the economy is "recovering" and the panel is populated
by more of the old-school participants who are cautiously trying to
explain the "turn-around" and how the "recovery" will continue.
I think the consensus is that the engine of the recovery is the
restructuring of private companies and that the government policy and
reforms are the oil.
I personally think that we need more fundamental changes in Japan,
but I think that the incentive to make big changes will decrease as
long as this fragile recovery continues. I think it's probably more
constructive for me to spend my efforts on global issues and blogging
until Japan needs my subversive energy again. ;-)
Comment from the audience: It's not the number of women in the
women in the Japanese workforce, but rather their role in the
workforce.
UPDATE: Ack! Rebecca glared at me, I shook my head, but she called
on me for a comment anyway. I asked whether the more painful reforms
are going to get less attention now that people are focused on the
recover and making people feel comfortable.
One of the panel members disagreed with me and asserted that with
political will, many of the fundamental changes will continue to
happen and might even be easier.
Hmm... maybe in some areas, but I doubt it. Maybe I should have
defined "fundamental changes."

Porn Spam Makes A Triumphant Return
Porn Spam Makes A Triumphant Return
02/01/2005 09:43 PMIt's getting tough to tell who you can actually trust when it comes to
the various spam surveys about what spam is out there -- as they
seldom seem to agree with each other. Just a month ago we were
writing about how
porn
spam clearly seemed to be on the decline, while a new report
suggests the
amount of
porn spam has tripled. Indeed, the studies might agree, as the
new one says that porn spam tripled in January from December (when we
had noted it slowed). So, apparently, porn spammers suddenly felt
that January was the right time to start blasting porn spam again,
while financial spam suddenly seemed to be less exciting. On the
"always popular" list, "health" or "medical" spam (again,
extremely loosely defined) seems to always be in fashion.

Amazon A9: Froogle Competitor?
Amazon A9: Froogle Competitor?
10/28/2003 11:08 PMAP: Amazon.com invades Google's turf with Silicon Valley
startup.Seattle-based Amazon has dubbed its search startup "A9" and
set up offices in Palo Alto, not far from Google's Mountain View
headquarters. A9 hopes to launch in October with 30 employees and grow
much larger as it develops a search engine that will be licensed to
other Web sites, said spokeswoman Alison Diboll. [...] Unlike Google,
A9 isn't trying to develop an all-purpose search engine that indexes
billions of Web pages. Instead, the startup is focusing on a search
engine sweet spot -- e-commerce.The article is very vague so it's hard
to get a handle one exactly what A9 is, but it does sound a lot like
Froogle, Google's shopping search engine. (Thanks, Ahmad.)...

Lawyers Can't Agree On Competitor
Keyword Ads
07/06/2004 05:28 AMThe whole Google selling trademarked ads issue is getting ridiculous.
Now a
bunch of lawyers are arguing over it, after one
lawyer bought Google ads on the name of a competitor. The competitor
in question sent a nastygram to the lawyer saying he was trying to
"sponge" off his reputation. Except... that's not true. As the
accused lawyer in question points out, he just put his name where
potential customers might be looking for it. As we've
pointed
out before this is no different than a new soda company wanting to
be placed on the shelf next to Coca-Cola. They know people will go
looking for Coke, and they want to make sure their bottles on there as
well. The
purpose of trademark law is to protect someone from
being lied to when one company claims they're something they aren't.
However, to just make sure your advertisements appear where people are
looking for your competitors is simply good business. The reporter
then goes out and digs up a bunch of quotes from other lawyers
suggesting that the ad-buying lawyer is an underhanded bastard who is
somehow "cheating." It's pretty clear from the quotes that most of
the quoted lawyers don't understand the actual issue at hand, but that
doesn't seem to stop the reporter from quoting them all, without
quoting a single source (other than the accused lawyer) with the
opposing viewpoint.

Digital Junkyard: A Competitor To The
Internet Archive?
12/09/2003 03:50 AMBrewster Kahle's Internet Archive project is really a great thing, but
should there be only one such archive? It looks like they may be
getting some competition in the form of the
digital junkyard being built at the
University of Waterloo. They claim it's the "world's largest"
archive of digital content - but I wonder if they're really larger
than the Internet Archive which is quite large and growing every day
by leaps and bounds. It's going to contain all sorts of odd content,
though, including "everything from movie outtakes to the sound bites
left on the editing floor during the shooting of a music video." They
say they plan to make it available to anyone who wants access, but
don't say how they plan to do so. Right now, however, it's not easy
to find at all, and after a quick search, I've given up until someone
with more time/knowledge of this project points it out.
