Keyword Press Release
02/11/2004 10:56 AMHotspot firm issues press release with good keywords: When you see a
press release of this form, a company has paid Business Wire or
PRNewswire to distribute a press release that contains as many
business names as possible to meet keyword matches at stock and news
sites for investors and analysts who scan for information. In this
short release, the company mentions Subway (which is only tangentially
related, as the consultant they're trumpeting having hired is a
franchise holder) in the headline, and a host of firms in this
sentence: Currently, the company is targeting the ownership and
operation of successful franchises such as Dairy Queen (NYSE:BRK.a),
Subway, McDonalds (NYSE:MCD), Burger King, Baskin-Robbins, Ben &
Jerry's, Carls. Jr. (NYSE:CKR), TCBY Yogurt, and Mrs. Fields. Back
when Amazon.com's affiliate program for allowing sales to be referred
to them for commissions was new, the tiniest dotcoms would issue press
releases that they had "partnered" with Amazon.com when, in fact,
they'd just signed up as an affiliate. Amazon.com started enforcing a
contract provision that said affiliates weren't allowed to issue such
releases. This release goes a step further, as the company has no
direct relationship with any of the firms mentioned; this is just
unabashed PR keyword spamming. The company's own site only lists a
handful of locations in press releases; there's no location finder.
Did you notice I didn't mention the firm's name? I'm not out to give
them more indirect publicity....

Press Release, Spam, What's The
Difference?
Press Release, Spam, What's The
Difference?
07/29/2004 03:32 PMIt's amazing the level of stupidity to which PR people will sink.
Just two weeks after we wrote about
idioti
c PR people submitting press releases to us when we clearly ask
them not to, one company has sunk to a new low -- and it's making me
wonder if PR pitches are officially spam under the law. First,
instead of using the submission function, this PR spammer tracked down
my email address. Not hard to do, but if you want anyone here to
write about something, it makes our life much better to use the
submission page. That's why we have it. If you're going to make our
lives more difficult, why would we ever bother to make yours better by
giving you free publicity? If you can't take the time to actually
read the site and understand the process, why should we take the time
to hype up your fake news? However, instead of just sending the usual
note that PR people tend to do, this individual sent us FOUR press
releases in a row, all using CAPITAL LETTERS and all marked URGENT. I
honestly thought it was traditional spam at first, as I would any time
I received four emails in a row written in capital letters from
someone I didn't know. However, it's clearly been sent to us for
posting purposes. The company in question (who I won't bother to
name) has been mocked on certain other sites for its ability to take
whitebox laptops mark up the price to ridiculous levels and then
promote it as their own (you figure it out). None of the
announcements are even remotely interesting to our audience, and
anyone who had read Techdirt for more than a day would know not to
bother submitting them. It's no surprise, of course, that this guy
clearly does not read the site. However, when I looked closer at the
emails in question, I think I could make a very convincing case that
they are, indeed, spam as defined by the law. First, the message does
not include, as required, the address of the company sending the PR
spam. Second, the "from" line includes a name, but
no email
address. The guy didn't spoof a different email address, but
somehow fudged the headers so that there's no email address in the
from or reply-to fields. There is no option to opt-out. In fact,
it's not easy to email them back to ask to opt-out because there's no
reply-to email address. So, beyond just being entirely moronic, is
this company guilty of spamming?

iPass Releases Press Release with
McDonald's Name in It
11/10/2003 10:53 PMMcDonald's will have its networks certified as Enterprise Ready by
iPass: Now the ostensible purpose of this announcement is that
McDonald's restaurants with Wi-Fi access will be available to
customers on the iPass collective network, which comprises over 2,000
hotspots and 400,000 users across the companies they serve. But read a
little closer and you find that the three networks that McDonald's
currently uses to run its Wi-Fi service -- Wayport, Cometa, and
Toshiba -- are either already certified or soon to be. So what's the
news here? Two pieces of news, really. First, McDonald's is making a
corporate-level commitment to iPass, which means that even if they use
other networks, they'll ostensibly make sure that other operators are
or will be certified. Second, McDonald's gave iPass permission to use
its name in a press release, which can't hurt on the credibility side.
A little extra news at the end notes that McDonald's in China will
also become iPass Enterprise Ready. Because all iPass customers have a
directory of hotspots that they are really required to use if they are
to use hotspots at all -- the software can be set to only allow access
to hotspots on iPass's list -- this provides McDonald's with more of
those business bodies they want....

Exclusive: Photoshop CS2 Press Release
Leaked
03/27/2005 06:40 PMThanks to
Drexthepimp for writing to Neowin about this one.
Seems as though Google indexed this Adobe press release a few days
ago, even thought Adobe has not made it public yet. (Scheduled for
release on April 4th) Photoshop CS2 is scheduled to ship for OSX and
Windows users sometime in May.
This press release for Photoshop 9 is scheduled for April, but it
came thick and fast when I searched for this anticipated App. Improved
file browser, HDR image support and firewire preview look cool for us
digital video fans, but there are changes to the layers pallete,
instancing etc. Not everything i wanted/wished for or even heard
rumoured, but good none the less.
A few highlights from the leaked release:
Photoshop CS2 integrates a new set of intuitive tools, including an
enhanced Spot Healing Brush, for handling common photographic problems
such as blemishes, red-eye, noise, blurring and lens distortion. Smart
Objects allow users to scale and transform images and vector
illustrations without losing image quality — as well as create linked
duplicates of embedded graphics — so that a single edit updates across
multiple iterations.
Photoshop CS2 users will test the limits of creativity with new tools
like Vanishing Point and Image Warping. Vanishing Point cuts tedious
graphic and photo retouching tasks by allowing users to clone, paint
and transform image objects while retaining visual perspective.
Reinventing workflows such as product packaging development, Image
Warping makes it easy to fold, stretch, pull, twist and wrap an image
into shape by selecting an on-demand preset or dragging custom control
points.

T-Mobile and Comcast Produce Press
Release, Hotspot
05/27/2004 03:17 PMYour editor has been trying to sort these story out for a couple of
days: T-Mobile's hotzone powered by Comcast broadband: The problem
with a story like this is that it's been given enormous play because
it's a major city and a large area. But it's planned to be a paid
location after the first six months, and it's not particularly
interesting as a "partnership," because Comcast's role is mostly
marketing. Sure, they're bringing in bandwidth, but any Internet
provider would do. Likewise, T-Mobile has no other outdoor hotzones
that I'm aware of, and it's unclear what the point is of this one: a
trial balloon? The press release and coverage cites the fact that
Comcast customers have access to T-Mobile's hotspot service. Sure, and
so do I: the rate, as far as I can tell, is the same. Again,
marketing. I thought about not covering this at all, but it's worth
explicating the event. Meanwhile, in cities around the country,
hotzones like NewburyOpen.net in Boston and Battery Park in Manhattan
are sprouting that are commercially supported free locations designed
to be free indefinitely and focusing on areas with high appropriate
traffic....

Blogs Offer New Opportunities For Press
Release Ridiculousness
Blogs Offer New Opportunities For Press
Release Ridiculousness
06/22/2005 02:17 AMClueless PR people absolutely
love to come out with the most
idiotic press releases (many of which they send to us here at
Techdirt). Among our favorites are announcements about how a certain
company had a "successful appearance" at a trade show -- as if the
expectation was that their booth was going to catch fire and burn to
the ground. It appears that blogs are offering yet another
opportunity for the bogus press release. Witness an announcement
today from a well known (and highly promotional) web hosting/domain
name registration company (no need to name them) that came out with
the absolutely ridiculous announcement that their CEO's blog
is the
23rd most popular blog out there. First off, since when do you
celebrate being the 23rd most popular of anything, unless you're into
obscure
literary references? However, even more bizarre is how the
company came to this conclusion -- which could be easily disputed.
There are probably a hundred different lists of the most popular 100
blogs out there, all measured in completely different, and often
contradictory ways. So you could pick any way you want -- but, in
this case, the company has
combined two different methods,
because no single method alone actually proved the point. Instead,
they pulled up the site's Alexa ranking, which is
notorious
ly inaccurate in being a real representation of traffic.
Then, the company went down Technorati's Top 100 list (again,
wildly inaccurate in some ways), which the site in question
isn't
actually listed in and compared those sites' Alexa numbers to the
CEO's blog's Alexa ranking, and found that it would rank about 23rd in
Alexa rankings, if you had a Technorati 100 list weighted by Alexa
rankings -- a combination that makes no sense. Amusingly, Techdirt's
Alexa ranking (which we agree is indicative of pretty much nothing) is
about the same as this particular CEO's, so perhaps
we're the
24th most popular blog out there. Somehow, I doubt it, but
maybe we should send out a press release, just in case.

Press Release - NewsGator Technologies
and About.Com Agreement Allows Users to
Access New RSS Feeds Within Microsoft
Outlook
10/28/2003 11:09 PMFirst In Series of Moves To Add Valuable Content For
Users
DENVER, Colo. -- Aug. 19, 2003 -- NewsGator Technologies has
partnered with About.com to include over 400 RSS feeds in NewsGator
1.3's new feed wizard, which means that users will be able to find and
subscribe to any of About.com's feeds with only a few clicks. Adding
these feeds marks the first in a series of announcements designed to
add important and productive content for NewsGator users, while at the
same time making the content easier to find.
NewsGator 1.3 is a news aggregator which runs inside Microsoft
Outlook, and retrieves news from news sites, weblogs, NNTP (Usenet)
newsgroups, and other information sources that support the RSS
syndication format, and automatically integrates the news items into
Microsoft Outlook folders.
About.com, the Web's largest content destination, recently created
more than 400 RSS feeds, covering each of their content areas.
Including these feeds in NewsGator's feed wizard will expand the reach
and visibility of these feeds to NewsGator users. "We're very excited
to be partnering with NewsGator Technologies to include our wide range
of content feeds within NewsGator," said Ron McCoy, CTO of About.com.
"We believe that publishing our content this way, combined with the
ease-of-use and corporate reach of NewsGator, will increase the
visibility of our content to a new audience and make it easier for our
current audience to keep up with the topics in which they're
interested."
NewsGator users can monitor the ever-growing number of information
sources supporting RSS syndication. News can be sorted, organized,
grouped, or searched in countless ways, and features like offline
reading make this information readily accessible at any time.
NewsGator 1.3 works with Microsoft Outlook 2000 or later, and is
available immediately from http://www.newsgator.com. Pricing
is $29 (U.S.) per copy, with quantity discounts available.

Press Release - NewsGator 1.3 Tightens
Integration with Microsoft Outlook and

10/28/2003 11:09 PMNewsGator 1.3 Tightens Integration with Microsoft Outlook and Adds
Newsgroup Support
NewsGator, the Premier News Aggregator for Outlook, Allows Users
to Subscribe to Syndicated RSS News Feeds, and is First to Add Support
for Newsgroups within Outlook
Denver, CO - August 5, 2003 - NewsGator 1.3, a new version of the
popular news aggregator for Microsoft Outlook, was announced today by
NewsGator Technologies. NewsGator retrieves news from news sites,
weblogs, and other information sources that support the RSS
syndication format, and automatically integrates the news items into
Microsoft Outlook folders. In addition to RSS feeds, NewsGator 1.3
adds the ability to subscribe to NNTP (Usenet) newsgroups, the first
tool of its kind to provide this capability within Microsoft
Outlook.
The continued growth of RSS (Rich Site Summary) news syndication
feeds makes NewsGator an extremely powerful way to stay abreast of
rapidly changing information. Adding additional information sources
such as newsgroups to NewsGator 1.3 further enhances this capability,
bringing more business information into Outlook without driving users
elsewhere to subscribe or search for it.
Version 1.3 also adds many frequently requested features to
NewsGator, including tighter folder integration and support for
multiple Outlook profiles. Tighter folder integration makes mapping
folders to subscriptions easier, and support for multiple Outlook
profiles helps corporate users access important information when on
the road and disconnected from their Exchange server.
Further enhancing NewsGator’s offline support is the ability to
compose new posts offline, which is a significant benefit for
corporate users. Users can now compose new posts while offline and
disconnected, and then post them later when they have a live network
connection.
"The new support for newsgroups within Version 1.3 demonstrates
NewsGator's leading edge capabilities for multiple information
sources," said Chris Pirillo, president of Lockergnome. "This feature
combined with the new offline posting support makes NewsGator the
perfect information management tool for consumers and corporate users
alike."
Pricing
