Fix Web Multimedia
Fix Web Multimedia
06/24/2004 04:40 PMLucas Gonze:
What I am thinking is that we need a tech social movement
to fix web multimedia by insisting that web standards be followed.
REST was such a movement in the protocol space. The Zeldman-inspired
movement to use structural HTML and CSS only did the same thing with
design. This would be a direct analog for multimedia. Use real URLs
that are not hidden behind javascript. Use correct mime types -- no
making them up because you don't have time to look up the answer. Use
standard data formats -- no proprietary types. Use correctly formatted
playlists -- if you have a ram playlist, the extension must be .ram
rather than .rm.
Well said. Creative Commons likes multimedia and
believes in building on
standards. The web will benefit from this movement. Those
interested in building a commons will benefit in particular. Trivial
example: It can be a big pain to share and reuse content mediated by a
maze of javascript. If you want your content to be shared and built
upon, do license it,
then follow Gonze's advice. One way to do this is to take advantage of
the Internet Archive's ability to
host Creative Commons licensed audio and video content.

News.com is
reporting that six
critical vulnerabilities were found in libpng,
a widely used library for displaying images in PNG format.
Note that libpng
is open source yet no one noticed those vulnerabilities until
now. In my opinion,
libpng being free and open source actually contributed to the
scalability of attacks
that could be launched through those vulnerabilities.
Even more disturbing is that, while patches for vulnerabilities
found in end products
like IE and Mozilla are quickly and widely distributed, patches for
vulnerabilities
in libraries often never make it to the end products that use the
faulty versions
of the libraries for various reasons.
How would you know if any of the infrequently used programs and
utilities you have
in your computer use vulnerable versions of popular libraries like
libpng? You
don't. Your only protection is that there are easier
targets. Unfortunately,
vulnerabilities in multimedia software is starting to look more
attractive for hackers.
Most likely avenue of viral multimedia attack is using porn
to drive wide distribution
of video codecs (compression/decompression) software.They
don't have
to carry trojans either. All they need are a handful of
intentional
defects for them to use as a wedge later. They can even release
the
software as open source since the chance of being discovered before
harvest time is
rather low.
Consider this a sort of social engineering attack against the
little head.

Multimedia nodes in the home
Multimedia nodes in the home
07/17/2004 04:29 PMI just spent some time looking through my archives of a photo of
the nodes we had in my home on Potrero Hill. Murphy is preventing me
from showing you folks my nodes, but needless to say it was 1995-96
when we built them.
Here's Cory's post and then I'll tell yah all about my
nodes.....
PC-based media centre in a wall-socket
This is pretty cool -- a prototype wallplate with three sockets, a
USB port and a hard-drive, for use as a home media appliance.
The original brief by ComCom was to
design a remote control. Thank Toshiko, he looked further than the
brief and designed a line of 22 integrated electronic products. One of
them is this wall mount triple socket. It has a USB port and a
built-in hard disk. You can store music and movies in it and send them
to other products in the same product line. The system will be shown
in October in ComCom's show apartment in Tokyo.
OK - back to me....
So I had 25 nodes in my home - each with:
- 2 Cat. 5 lines
- 2 phone lines
- 2 balanced line video feeds
- 4 balanced line audio feeds
- 1 analog conenctor (nine-pin DB-9)
- 20 amps of power
It all went to a patch bay in my basement where we could route
anything to anywhere - which included up on the front yard, side yard,
four locations in the back yard, the three porches and throughout the
home - including bathrooms and kitchen.
This is what our MediaBar location-based platform utilized.
The Los Angeles Times goes multimedia
The Los Angeles Times goes multimedia
03/21/2003 12:14 AM
The Los Angeles Times goes
multimedia. For the past few weeks, the LA Times has begun a
significant push into offering video, audio, and interactive Flash on
their website. One of the most interesting aspects is that the paper
has moved one step beyond simply replaying AP Television clips as many
sites have done; the LA Times writers are stand before the cameras and
microphones themselves and report stories in a stuttering,
non-hairsprayed, introverted demeanor that I find very refreshing,
though so far I have gleaned very little additional information from
it. When does (or can) this mode of journalism on the web rise above
gimmickry or 'just because we can' and add value to a written article?
Can video/tv news rise above mere spectacle?
