SoftAP Brings Mac's Simplicity to
Windows

SoftAP Brings Mac's Simplicity to
Windows
06/04/2004 01:46 PM
Apple has offered a software base station feature in its client software for nearly five years; PCTel now brings the same ease to Windows with Segue SoftAP: Under Windows XP, you can set up an ad hoc Wi-Fi network and then link that via Internet sharing to bridge an Ethernet, modem, or other connection to users connecting over Wi-Fi. But it's multiple steps and not really the same thing as creating a full software base station. Segue SoftAP from PCTel will cost $19.95 when it goes on sale to individuals this month, and offers all of the security and networking features needed for a robust, computer client-based offering. Of course, contrast this offering versus a $30 to $80 dedicated access point, and it might seem like a less desirable offering unless you're a mobile or portable computer user who needs to set up Wi-Fi hotspots on an ad hoc basis. Some notes on the Go Daddy Sponsorship!

Some notes on the Go Daddy Sponsorship! 06/06/2005 12:01 AM

Everyone that watched the Superbowl commercials this year knows about Go Daddy, their was even something controversial when their second spot got pulled. It was nice to see a company be good natured and take a little political jab at Janet incident, from the year before. I liked Bob Parsons strategy, and that ad was largely responsible for my choosing Go Daddy as my new hosting provider. See advertising does pay off.

After the Superbowl Go Daddy had a huge increase in business, so much so that I think they were caught a little of guard. This is my personal speculation only, and we were caught up in that growth. When we switched the site to the new box, we had a couple of major issues early on, that were resolved to my complete satisfaction. One thing I must say about this company is this, they went the extra mile to make sure that the issue was resolved, I even had a conference call with a couple of their techs and the CTO to discuss the problem.

What amazed me the most even when I called them, and was mad they did react positively to my concerns in a way that made me think they really care about their customers. They even initiated some changes to my and I am sure some others suggestions that have resulted in some spectacular customer service.

So many times today companies give you the hand, and would rather loose you as a customer. But this company listened to my concerns and reacted like no company I have seen in a long time.

The server I have been on since signing up with Go Daddy is a Virtual Dedicated Server, and I think I have their middle hosting package with a couple of upgrades. I pay for that server now and will continue to out of my companies bank account, it is running in a rack along with the thousands of others, no special configuration or privileges. I get what every one else gets.

So don't get me wrong, if I have an issue, you all are going to be the first to know about it, as the site is hosted at Go Daddy. I am pretty happy to say though, that I have not restarted the server in over 15 days and the last time I did, was because I felt like it not that it needed it.

As a side note, when I put the Geek News Central Podcasts MP3 file on the net I do so at a third party hosting service. Their is a reason for that, in the first several hours that file is online, nearly 5000 of you download it. The box I am on at Go Daddy is not designed to handle that kind of load. But it does handle the 10 or so domains I have running on it at the moment. The box moved about 400 gigs of traffic last month and our website is pretty high volume.

I am very happy to have Go Daddy as a sponsor and look forward to bringing you some great deals. Tune into the Podcast tomorrow because if your looking to save some money on domain registrations I am going to have some promo codes to pass out.

One thing you don't have to worry about, I will my same old objective self. Todd..

Jack Chick creationist comic "Big Daddy"

Jack Chick creationist comic "Big Daddy" 12/19/2004 03:34 PM
Xeni Jardin: BoingBoing reader Tommy York says,
Recently, at a school rally of mine here in San Francisco, I came across the booth of the Christian club at school, AGAPE. I decided to pick up a few little comics of theirs, and I came across this one - one the denounces evolution, procedes to denounce the whole theory of the "atom" too, and by disproving evolution, of course, shows that the only logical alternative is that Jesus is the creator. Propaganda like this in public schools seems a bit off to me.
Link to page-by-page photos of "Big Daddy" creationist comic book. I can't help but wonder what the whole thing would sound like read in the voice of Mr. Slave from South Park. I mean, "Big Daddy"? The unshaven monkey with the banana on the cover looks vaguely Tom of Finland. Oh jesusth christth, Jack Chick!

Update: Reader Lance Simmons says, "There's a much better copy of Big Daddy at the publisher's site." Link. See also these previous BoingBoing posts on Jack Chick's Christian comix: Link, and Link 2.
