blo.gs acquired by Yahoo! 06/17/2005 07:22 PM
Jim Winstead tells the sale of blo.gs has been completed, and i'm proud to announce that yahoo! has acquired the service. as of right now, give or take a few minutes, yahoo! is running blo.gs. this is the sort of good home that i was looking for — yahoo! obviously has the resources to run and improve blo.gs in pace with the incredible growth of blogs (and syndication in general), and in talking with them it was also clear that...

T-Mobile Austria is acquiring the 300-hot-spot strong Metronet.at (press release is in German): T-Mobile is continuing to expand its international presence through acquisition of Metronet. T-Mobile has partnered with Metronet on roaming since 2002. Metronet is the fourth-largest European WISP, according to their press release. Kurzweil Educational Systems, which makes scan-to-speech systems for the blind and dyslexic, has been purchased by Cambium Learning, a company serving "at-risk" students. In 1976, Ray Kurzweil invented a system that would read a page out loud. At that point it cost $100,000 and was the size of a major kitchen appliance. Kurzweil Computer Products became Xerox Imaging Systems in 1980. In 1996, KES was officially launched on its own. In 1998 it was purchased by Lernout & Hauspie. When the founders of L&H were led away in manacles because they were despicable con artists who should rot in hell,...

Dot Consolidation Is Back

Dot Consolidation Is Back 04/19/2004 03:01 AM
In case you hadn't noticed, while the dot com IPO market looks to be heating up again, the busiest activity is actually over in the mergers and acquisitions area where internet companies are looking for consolidation opportunities before the prices of smaller companies get too out of hand again. Of course, there's no guarantee that acquiring companies will do much better than they've done in the past integrating a bunch of disparate companies into a single compelling entity, but people tend to ignore that in the heat of a merger opportunity.

Is Consolidation A Myth?

Is Consolidation A Myth? 12/23/2003 02:45 AM
Thought provoking piece over at Always-On suggesting that al l this fear about consolidation killing off competition is a big myth. While there are plenty of examples of companies buying up each other (and even areas where there are fewer companies within a specific space than before) consumers have more choice than ever before, leading to better products and lower prices. Sure, it may seem like there are big media conglomerates, but there are also plenty of independent websites that give people choice. Sure, there may be fewer small local banks, but there are plenty more banks that have expanded from other areas to serve a large population. Basically, what appears to be happening is that the regional companies are being eaten up, but there's plenty of competition on a global basis. Of course, there are still some exceptions (I'm still limited in my broadband connection choice, for instance), but these might be temporary monopolies, rather than a permanent state of affairs. I'm not sure it's completely true, but I do think some fears about consolidation everywhere are overblown.

Reviving Acquired Startups Suffering
Inside Big Companies

Reviving Acquired Startups Suffering
Inside Big Companies
05/17/2004 03:04 AM
There are so many stories of big companies buying startups for lots of money, and then realizing they don't really have a need for the startup. In a few cases, the company's former management team will buy back the startup, but it's a fairly difficult move. There is even the occasional story where startups selling out to larger companies have been able to write in buyback terms - but it doesn't happen very often. However, realizing that this situation happens more often than people like to admit, a new VC fund has been formed to help buy former startups out of the larger companies that acquired them. Basically, these VCs have found an undervalued market. The current owners want out, while the startups are already (somewhat) proven with a known product and known market - which just isn't getting the attention it deserves or needs. Should be interesting to see what comes out of these once again startups.
