Google Quietly Introduces Book Searches
Google Quietly Introduces Book Searches
12/17/2003 08:22 PMYou just can't stop Google, it seems. Last week they were adding
features like the ability to track your FedEx packages, and now
they've launched the beta test of their
book
search capabilities. While, this is clearly something of a
response to Amazon's famed
search
inside the book feature, the end result isn't quite there. While
there had been rumors that Google was looking to
impleme
nt a similar service, what they just (very quietly) launched is
much simpler. Basically, they've just stored book flap info, and
mixed it in with the regular search results (though, as the article
points out, it doesn't show up that high on most searches). However,
if you find one, it links to a page within Google that includes
the info from
the inside flap of the book, a few simple facts about the book and
links to buy the book at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million
(they haven't even added in pricing info yet). While they don't have
affiliate codes to make money off of those links, I imagine it
wouldn't be difficult to add. The page does have their typical
contextual Adwords advertising, though - increasing their inventory.

Google Quietly Launches Video Upload
Offering
Google Quietly Launches Video Upload
Offering
04/13/2005 07:23 PMA few weeks ago, Larry Page mentioned in passing Google's plan to
let
users upload videos, making Google one of any number of new
players in this suddenly intriguing space of video storage (following
the insanely hot space of photo storage). It appears that
Google
has now launched the beta version of this program quietly (as
quietly as Google can launch anything -- meaning it's spreading fast).
It appears to have some interesting features, including letting you
charge people to download your videos, which puts it in competition
with new offerings like Brightcove. Either way, it's yet another
extension of easy media creation... from text, to audio, to video --
the tools of creations, storage and distribution are all getting
easier. While the easy claim is to dismiss it because there will be a
ton of useless crap (which there absolutely will be), that's missing
the real potential such video creation tools have. What's crap to
some people, won't be to others -- and the ability to find new gems
that weren't possible before will outweigh an infinite amount of
dreadful content.

11/19/2003 08:11 AMMicrosoft is
testing a news search service to compete with Google's News called
Newsbot with additional
features like personalization for users of MS Passport. Currently,
it's only for the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Spain. It looks
pretty much like Google's News, and we can anticipate anti-MS groups
fearing the "personalization features" and the rest of us just
wondering how Newsbot is any better than Google News.
