They deserve credit for admitting how their widget actually works: it uses multiqueueing, OS bypass, and user-level TCP to get extra processor efficiency out of standard TCP/IP/Ethernet protocols. The downside is that it's expensive; they should take a hint from Mellanox and Broadcom and lose the local memory.

The dDrive is a concept from industrial design firm Creganna that would be designed to store medical records, security clearances, etc., and while I don't have a huge problem with that in and of itself, I don't think I'll be giving up one of my teeth just for something that's going to be obsolete in a year. At least not just for storage - get a Bluetooth-enabled cellphone headset in there and we'll talk about it.

IT shops have been kicking and screaming since last August, avoiding Windows Service Pack 2 at all costs. Those days are over—you can no longer refuse to drink the Kool-Aid (although, in my experience, it's been a pretty secure, stable Kool-Aid).

INFOWORLD - Shortly after the August, 2004, release of Windows XP SP2, Microsoft posted several tools that allowed companies and individuals to block Automatic Update and/or Windows Update from automatically downloading and/or installing SP2. Those tools eventually used a built-in expiration date of April 12, 2005.
The only way to keep your copy of XP pristine is to shut off Automatic Updates, but then expect to see a PC-based worm farm almost immediately.

Daniel Root says, "NASA JPL has released stereo views of the red planet- in B&W- from one (actually two) of the on-board cameras. I combined them in a quick animation that gives somewhat of a feel for the 3d effect. (Not my own idea, but I can't find the site where I first saw it...) It's the next best thing to standing on Mars and getting a headache! You can see more stereo sets here."

(Thanks, Kevin Kelly, and Hal!)

And Nick says, "NASA's Explorer has sent back its first low res pictures, which NASA have stitched together into several panoramic pictures. They haven't (so far, as far as I can see) gone the whole way and released them as QTVRs - so I did the job for them, here."

So runs the headline on a current U.S. Navy recruiting ad. This may sum up current U.S. military philosophy pretty neatly, whatever the branch of service. No one from the Pentagon knows , or seems particularly interested in finding out, how many civilians we have killed in Iraq so far. I would guess it exceeds many times over the number who died here on September 11. One of the liabilities of conducting a military operation that is so heavily based on "death from above" is that, even with our surgical new targeting abilities, we are dangerously abstracted from the consequences below. I was put in mind of this today by this morning's Drudge Report, which contains an item about a video clip which a BarlowFriend with military connections sent me back at the end of January. I found it disturbing then and I continue to. I thought about posting it to this blog at the time, but it felt so much like war pornography that I was afraid I might be pandering. I still harbor scruples, but since this clip has just been broadcast on French television, the moral implications of "publishing" it seem less burdensome. Therefore, you will find it here. My friend described the clip as follows: "This is actual night-vision footage shot from a U.S. Apache attack helicopter engaging Iraqis, who allegedly were attempting to launch a Stinger missile at the Apache. The Apache responds with approximately one-hundred rounds of 30mm cannon fire, which is, ironically, the least powerful weapons system onboard the helicopter. The footage has been "dumbed down" to VHS resolution before conversion to MPEG, since the actual night-vision system on the Apache provides a much sharper and more detailed image." The clip speaks for itself. The three Iraqis are vaporized without much of what might be called due process. Perhaps they actually were preparing to attack the Apache, but they seem far too languid to have thought themselves in combat, particularly against something as lethal as an Apache less than a hundred feet away. Had I been in their situation, I would have been far more eager to launch and split. I can hear some of you snorting at my squeamishness. This is war, Buddy. Suck it up. But war has rules. Those who abide by them don't shoot the wounded, as we do in the clip. It's simply wrong. It's also impractical. These three Iraqis almost certainly have family members who are now bound by inarguable duty to avenge their deaths. In this video you can see us planting the seeds of terrorist retributions that will bloom for years....

Dewayne has been setting up large (really large) wireless networks in Tonga and Mongolia where the regulatory environment is - let's say - looser than here in the US. Thus, he can put technologies to the test that are caught in political bear traps in this country. Fascinating. The gigabit initiative intends to deliver 1 gigabit access to all Californians by 2010. Dewayne is convinced that only wireless will do...

1.4mm Thick Gigabit Ethernet Cable 03/14/2005 06:03 PM

flat_cable.jpgFlat network cables aren't anything new, but I'm pretty sure ones like this are. Japanese accessory king Elecom today announced the "LD-VAPF/SV05" network cabling, coming in at 1.4mm thick. With such a thin cable, you can run it pretty much anywhere you like; I guess it would work particularly well under carpet, in doorways, or as a new type of karate belt. The Cat5 standard cables support up to 1000BASE-T, and are reinforced with aluminium.
