Hotel Room Gadgets Confuse The Best Of Us

Hotel Room Gadgets Confuse The Best Of
Us
11/18/2003 04:46 AM

While hotels are constantly looking to add funky new technologies to their rooms, it appears that they're facing some backlash from travelers who are pissed off that the technology is impossible to use. If you're using a TV, you basically want to be able to turn it on, change the channels and change the volume via a remote control. You don't want 50 different buttons with tiny, incomprehensible text. Add to that the "special" video check outs and pay-per-view system and people find themselves accidentally ordering movies and checking out in the middle of their stay. Meanwhile, others are having problems understanding hotel alarm clocks, minibars and safes. For a while, hotels were promoting "smart rooms" that would turn on the light and the radio as you opened the door. Unfortunately, when most people enter a room and the lights and radio come on, they get scared because they think someone else is in there. All of these ideas probably sounded nice on paper, but no one seems to think through the real world use case. Gadgets in hotel rooms need to be very simple and straightforward, since people are only going to use them a few times. They don't want a learning curve - they just want things to be intuitive.

How Do You Confuse An MP3 Player With A
Handgun?

How Do You Confuse An MP3 Player With A
Handgun?
05/11/2004 06:09 PM
Maybe some people really do need eBay middlemen to help them properly handle their internet auctions. A young man in Canada thought he had ordered an MP3 player via eBay, and when the box arrived it said it was an MP3 player - but on opening the package, that MP3 player turned out to be a handgun and a gun license. The man quickly called police who took the handgun away (though, he did get to photocopy the gun license as a souvenir). The pawn shop that accidentally sent the gun instead of the MP3 player is shipping him the MP3 player now. You do have to wonder if someone else received an MP3 player instead of a gun, though. Of course, you have to wonder about a few other things as well. eBay banned fire arm sales years ago, so are some people using fake MP3 player auctions to sell fire arms, and assuming any buyer knows what they're getting? Furthermore, since when can you get your gun owner's license over eBay as well? The whole thing sounds very odd.

Don't confuse market with technology

Don't confuse market with technology 04/09/2004 04:11 PM

Question: Is moblogging a new market? [Scripting News]

I just responded to this article with this comment:

When the term 'market' is used, the researchers gear up, talk about demographics and the VCs start funding companies. I think we're all old enough now to realize that with each turn of the technology crank, we not only get smarter, but we also increase our bag of tricks - to create compelling end-user experiences.

Afterall - that's all that matters.

Me - I'll never be able to thumb in a message, but taking a photograph - is my cup of tea. Or shall I say "put that in your bowl and smoke it."

Would You Confuse A Microprocessor With

Would You Confuse A Microprocessor With
A Jazz Festival?
12/19/2003 11:39 AM
The point of trademark law is to prevent confusion or someone thinking that an endorsement had been made when it hadn't. So, would you confuse a music festival with a microprocessor? Probably not. The Tanglewood Music Festival is a very famous music festival held in Massachusetts each year. I know people who try to go every year. However, my first thought on hearing that Intel's code name (note: not actual product name) for a new processor was Tanglewood was not that the music folks had anything to do with the offering. Who would think that a music festival would be endorsing a processor - and if they were, who would actually care? However, the lawyers at Tanglewood were concerned, and rather than fight it, Intel has changed the code name of the chip to Tukwila, keeping with their theme of code naming projects after locations in the Pacific Northwest.

Brian sez:
The local TV station had been running radio promos for a story about a local school magazine fundraiser that included an "adult" magazine. It's a conservative area, so we figured maybe they accidentally got order forms with Playboy, or maybe the locals were just throwing fits over FHM and Maxxim.

Nope -- the adult magazine in question was Asimov's Science Fiction.

The platform includes a PDA in each guest room that interacts with the hotel manager over a Wi-Fi network. The PDA can be embedded in the wall behind a screen to avoid damage. Guests can use it to order food from local restaurants, arrange for laundry to be cleaned, and buy tickets for tourist events. The first implementation will include 600 PDAs and ultimately CareDecision thinks the deal will include installation of 5,800 units....
