The Stone Supercomputer

The Stone Supercomputer 12/24/2004 12:57 PM

The Stone SouperComputer: Who says your cluster has to be expensive? When it was running, this cluster at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory had 133 nodes in it, most 486s with 32MB RAM and 10 MB/s Ethernet cards.

While our first Beowulf-style parallel computer isn't built out of the most impressive hardware, we got tired of fighting for funding and went ahead with what we could find. Much like the classic Tale of Stone Soup, many individuals contributed to the existing machine*. Because of a complete lack of funding, we used surplus personal computers donated by individuals from ORNL, the Procurement Dept., Y-12, and K-25, to build a parallel computer system which uses public domain compilers and message passing libraries. This system was built at literally no cost.

This was back in the late 90s, so 66MHz wasn't that slow. Still, pretty darn slow.

Making a supercomputer these days is a lot easier than you might think. I even helped build one myself in just one day earlier this month. The call to create the processing beast came from a group of University of San Francisco graduate students whose goal was to entice hundreds of computer enthusiasts like myself to unite their laptop and desktop systems into a megacomputer powerful enough to crack the list of the Top 500 fastest supercomputers on Earth. Topping that list is Japan's 40-teraflop Earth Simulator.

Google's supercomputer -- or supernode -- gives it a leg up on the competition. Yours, however you define it, will too. [Full story at InfoWorld.com]
Echoes of the Google-as-supercomputer meme are everywhere lately. Sun's new chief, Jonathan Schwartz, invoked it when we met with him recently. His take: Sure, Google runs its search and mail applications on Google, but it runs its business applications on Solaris. Coherent symmetric multiprocessing scales in a different direction, Schwartz said, and that's where Solaris 10 is headed with its revamped and highly granular partitioning. ...

Small Town Software announced on Tuesday the release of Time and Budgets, a new application that integrates with Apple's iCal application to supply time and budgeting functions for projects. The software also works with any calendar program that supports WebDAV (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning), which means .Mac subscribers can use iCal with the online service to seamlessly input data and generate reports that convert time into dollars and cents that can be compared against a project's budget. Available reports in Time and Budgets include time sheets with visual charts, details about time logged in specific phases and tasks, aggregate workgroup feedback and more. Another option can generate e-mail alerts when projects have reached certain financial goals.
