Haunted electricity

Haunted electricity 02/16/2004 10:35 AM
While I was away at Emerging Tech, the electric company installed a special meter on our incoming line to see if the voltage is clean and sober. The guy left it there for three days. When he picked it up, he told us that he'd have to do it again because the machine broke. Coincidence? I think not....Bwahahahaha. Meanwhile, I have now thrown out my bookshelf-style stereo system because it lost all bass and the remote stopped working; the tuner can only be tuned through the remote. (Yes, I did put in new batteries. And I did get a Mac.)...

Haunted Mansion castmember's remembrance

Haunted Mansion castmember's remembrance 09/17/2004 02:50 AM
Cory Doctorow: Here's the first-person account of a summer student intern at Walt Disney World who got the killer assignment of working at the Haunted Mansion (what a dream gig!):
I hated being told I wasn’t scary. I hated being made fun of for my deep Southern accent. I hated the fact that I was a southern happy blonde with pigtails stuck in a dark damp Mansion. Then I gave it a chance. I realized I was lucky to have such a highly coveted position. I slowly let myself fall into the role and was thrilled the first time I actually scared a guest. I learned that many of my fellow cast members weren’t as rude and sarcastic as they seemed, they just really took pride in their job. And I found my spot in the Mansion crew. I was the one that lost children were taken to because I was probably the least scary. I was the one that parents turned to for an encouraging word to convince their children to try the ride. The first time a six year old boy came running out of the Mansion with a huge smile to give me a hug before getting back on the ride, I finally felt like I had a place at the Mansion.

The list of accusations leveled against Mr. Eisner by family groups, children advocates, safety officials, the press, consumers, stock holders, and Disney cast members is voluminous and can no longer be ignored or tolerated. Cory Doctorow: Drum|head is an interactive project by Murat Konar, a student at London's Royal College of Art. It starts with a wig-stand with a computer-projected clip of a face on it (this is the same effect used for the "singing busts," "Madame Leota" and "Little Leota" at the Haunted Mansion in they Disney parks). A piezoelectric sensor detects it when you whack the head with a stick, cueing a drum sound and a funny facial-expression animation. The video is hilarious. Link (via We Make Money Not Art)

New Yorker on Dorkbot 06/02/2004 06:28 PM
Dorkbot, a group of "people doing strange things with electricity" that meets in various cities worldwide, was profiled in this recent New Yorker story:
Dorkbot was founded by a young man named Douglas Repetto, who teaches computer music at Columbia. "The idea of dorkbot was to reach people who had nowhere to talk about these projects," Repetto says. "Some might appear in a gallery, perhaps, but many are too odd, or they're unfinished, or it's not even clear what they are." Dorkbot presentations typically feature novel ways of using electrical devices, especially uses that don't require much money. "Dorkbot is about what you can do on the cheap in a back room somewhere," he says. The name encourages humility.

The New Yorker on the torture at Abu
Ghraib
05/03/2004 08:43 PM

In case anyone missed this, there is a detailed article on the torture at Abu Ghraib in The New Yorker. Unlike the sniper rumor, this one is pretty much documented fact. I realize that this is obviously not standard behavior, but it is not a single wacko, but a group of soldiers. It's really quite appalling. How can something like this happen? What is the mood like among American soldiers in Iraq? Is there a general hatred or is it really isolated behavior? I can't imagine an occupying force being very successful without some basic respect for the local citizens.

I remember hearing that the occupying forces in post-war Japan were selected from soldiers who had not served in combat against the Japanese. Most of the stories you hear about the soldiers occupying Japan are good stories. I suppose it's easier to be nice when there is no resistance, but still... (My sister has a nice post about the story of our family's first interaction with the US occupation of Japan.)

I also heard from a Spanish friend of mine that there is very little if no hatred towards Muslims after the 3/11 attack in Madrid. People realize that it is a splinter group and are not blaming the Muslims.

I don't want to over-generalize, but trying to link Al Qaeda to Iraq and some of the hate crimes against Muslims in the US really highlights the lack of racial sympathy or understanding on the US's part. I think the US really needs to figure out how to deal with this racial intolerance and ignorance if it's going to try do any kind of nation building.

Before someone else says it, I think racism in Japan is also very bad, but we're not toppling regimes and trying to rebuild them. I wouldn't trust Japan with that either.

Patent Office Agrees To Check Into All
That Prior Art On The Eolas Patent
11/12/2003 01:35 PM
The latest in the Eolas patent saga is that someone at the Patent Office has finally agreed to review the patent based on stacks and stacks of prior art that people have been finding. Amazingly, the Patent Office appears to have responded quickly (though, they don't say how long it will take for a new decision on the patent) to the requests for a re-examination of the patent. There's a quote from the USPTO's deputy commissioner for patent examination policy saying that this was an "extraordinary situation" which necessitated the quick response. The problem with this statement is that it's not an extraordinary situation. In fact, it's an increasingly common situation, where silly patents are getting the stamp of approval every day - and then used to hold other companies up for extortion, rather than for encouraging innovation.

Silly Patent Of The Day: Adobe Hit With
Lawsuit Over Hyperlink Patent

Silly Patent Of The Day: Adobe Hit With
Lawsuit Over Hyperlink Patent
07/08/2004 05:05 PM
I think it's about time we came up with a new topic/icon for stupid patents. There are just so many of them these days. The latest is that Adobe, who is no stranger to abusing intellectual property rules, is now being hit with a patent over their PDF technology. The patent is for a method of extracting network information via hyperlinks. Reading through the patent, they're basically describing a system for clicking on a hyperlinking and having the system not only download the page in question, but all locally related pages linked from that page as well. Perhaps a useful system, but it seems like this sort of technology was around well before the patent was granted, and it's unclear what it has to do with PDF files.

Modem Tester
09/27/2004 03:30 AM
Richard C. Jaworski announces that the US Patent Office has granted his “Petition to Make Special” on his System of Testing the Upstream Cable Modem Channel (TUCMC) patent application. The petition to the US Patent Office alleged infringement of his technology by Acterna Corporation in their DSAM 2500 Cable Modem Test Instrument. Mr. Jaworski has written evidence that Acterna knew of the patent and the technology prior to releasing the feature in the DSAM 2500. According to patent law, triple damages are applicable for prior knowledge infringement as soon as the patent issues. Due to its special status, Jaworski expects the patent to issue in the immediate future. [PRWEB Sep 27, 2004]

Nintendo DS

Nintendo DS 12/19/2004 03:46 PM

The hype machine has been hot and heavy for the Nintendo DS. Of course there's always the excitement about a brand-new gaming console, whether it's a handheld or home unit. But the DS — the Dual Screen — is something altogether new. We managed to get our hands on one and let game reviewer Ben Kuchera give it a good rogering.

So I didn't know what to think when I hit the town looking for a Nintendo DS. Like most of us I was skeptical of the unit at first, the idea of a handheld with two screens and touch capabilities seemed too gimmicky, almost as if Nintendo was getting into the PDA market. Sony seemed ready to take the handheld crown from Nintendo with specs that were more initially impressive.

The result? Well, we're not going to spill the beans here, but let's just say he was pleasantly surprised. Want more detail? Read on...
