Intel chips that turn desktops into
wireless base stations
12/02/2003 01:24 AMIntel is working on a microchip that would let desktop PCs double as
access points for wireless networks. It's already possible to jigger a
PC do something like this already, so I suppose the idea is to make
this cheap enough and easy enough that most people wouldn't need to
bother buying a standalone wireless access point. On the other hand,
the cost of 802.11b access points is dropping to near zero, so is this
really solving a major problem? Read...

QuickerTek is showing off a new hardcore Wi-Fi-boosting
antenna for the MacMini that they claim will give the little box a
networking range of over a mile. The 27dBm Transceiver is a 500
milliwatt unit (the Mac mini standard Airport Extreme is around 30)
and is available for $180. Sure, that's over a third of the price of
the mini itself, but they aren't marketing to the average
user—think more along the lines of machines hidden in remote
niches.

NEC's Palm-Sized HDTV Transceiver

NEC has a new wireless video transmission technology using
the 60GHz band, and has already developed a palm-sized transceiver
just for it. Video and audio signals are digitized into a signal
measuring about 1Gbps, at which point they're transferred using "ASK,"
the same high speed transmission used in optical fiber. Because of the
small size and throughput of this unit, NEC suggests them for wireless
HDTV transmissions.
