Fetch 5 Ready for a Walk 06/05/2005 11:45 PM
Adam C. Engst (~290 words)

Fetch 5 Ready for a Walk -- Proving that you can teach an old dog new tricks, Jim Matthews and Fetch Softworks today released Fetch 5, a sleek new version of the earliest FTP client still in active development for the Macintosh. With Fetch 5, Jim focused on simplifying the user interface to improve ease of use and adding support for low-level technologies like SFTP. Fetch now sports a new toolbar for quick access to commonly used functions, Back and Recent buttons for easier navigation to previously viewed folders, a more Finder-like list view, and a status pane at the bottom of each transfer window. Other interface niceties include a file transfer progress indicator in Fetch's Dock icon, context-sensitive help, and a recent connections pop-up menu in the New Connection dialog. Under the hood, along with SFTP support, Fetch 5 now offers resuming of binary uploads, automatic detection of FTP and SFTP servers on your local network if they advertise their presence via Bonjour (formerly called Rendezvous), importing of Interarchy and Transmit bookmarks, support for using StuffIt to compress files automatically on upload and expand automatically on download, improved handling of non-ASCII and Unicode file names, and "Automatic Passive Mode" for automatic detection of proper connection modes for reliable transfers through firewalls and NAT gateways. Fetch 5 works with Mac OS X 10.2.4 or later (including Tiger), and it costs $25, with upgrades from Fetch 4 priced at $15. New copies of Fetch and upgrades may both be purchased directly from within Fetch 5; choose Purchase or Purchase Upgrade from the Fetch application menu. Users at educational and non-profit charitable organizations may apply for a free license. [ACE]

Kodo JDO 3.3.0 beta (Beta branch)

Kodo JDO 3.3.0 beta (Beta branch) 02/05/2005 09:35 PM
Screenshot Kodo JDO allows you to write database calls using Java statements instead of SQL statements, by supporting the Java Data Objects standard for transparent persistence. It is the most complete implementation of the JDO specification for relational data stores, and comes with tools for producing a schema from an object model, producing class files from an existing schema, and a performance pack (distributed caching and statement batching) that improves performance by 15 - 30 times. It supports most relational databases, application servers, and IDEs, and reduces the total coding effort by 20-40%.
Changes:
This beta introduced a number of JDO 2 features including preview support for single field identity. This allows for the use of application identity without writing object ID classes when using a single primary key field. A lifecycle event listening framework was added as a JDO 2 preview feature. A convenience method was added for retrieving instances based on OID, primary key value, and stringified OIDs. Apache Derby/Cloudscape support was added. Caches can now be evicted on a schedule. JMX 1.2 is now supported.

So apparently there's an unpleasant worm going around AOL Instant Messenger at the moment. Only it's not a worm - it's a semi-legitimate piece of adware which asks you for permission to "modify the instant messenger software, deliver additional content such as advertisements and promotional messages" and announces that "In addition, the software will interoperate with your current instant messaging client so as to permit the automatic sending of advertising messages originating from your computer to your contact or 'buddy' list regarding content offered by PSD Tools or its suppliers."

In other words, it spams itself to everyone on your buddy list. Naturally, since no one ever reads the terms and conditions on those things it's spreading like wildfire.

02/11/2004 04:31 PM
Here're my running notes from danah boyd's Re venge of the User: Lessons from Creator/User Battles at the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference in San Diego.
The response is an attempt to "configure the users" -- constrain behavior to acceptable behavior with messaaging, kicking people off, etc.

This won't work: you can't tell a hacker not to hack. These kids are social hackers. You can stop some bad behavior, but you chase off your best users, too.

Dating doesn't happen because you're in a dating context. Dating arises out of real contexts.

Taking away fakesters didn't make Frienster more real. Friendster is unreal because people never remove their friends, even if they never see them (the exception is when you break up, ironic, because ex-lovers are strong ties!).
