Does medical insurance have to be
heartless?
05/16/2004 12:08 PM
A friend of mine has been fighting chronic illness for years, a service-related disability (US Marine Corps), and has recently (finally) been able to get some relief ... and, naturally, insurance won't cover the costs. The Veterans Administration has been involved from the beginning, but has so far proven to be incapable of helping (drug pushing, mainly), and now she's stuck with thousands of dollars of bills for necessary medical treatment that insurance won't pay for. Oh, she works as a software engineer for one of the largest companies in the USA (and the world), and they treat her like she's a malingerer for having chronic illnesses. Where should she go for help and advice that will do as little as possible to make the financial issue any worse? How is it that a pretty well-funded system like the VA can fail so miserably at one of its primary responsibilities (care of veterans who suffer service-related disabilities)? Is there any compassion left in the US? Or have we all gone the way of the Almighty Dollar?

Medical Imaging Collaborative 04/06/2005 06:17 PM
Medical imaging research is complex, time-consuming and often very expensive, with a wide range of standards, equipment and software available. Medical researchers can find themselves unable to share data easily with colleagues. Two enterprising medical doctors addressed this problem and came up with a Macintosh-only solution called OsiriX that is changing how many in the field examine and share scanned images, medical image data and visualizations.
