Gmail invites swept away

Gmail invites swept away 03/14/2005 04:27 PM

Either the figure of 1.5 million invites was exaggerated or isnoop has parted with almost 1.4 million invites in 24 hours! Because now the available Gmail spool is down to about 160.000. isnoop.net gmail invite spooler...

I have some gmail invites

I have some gmail invites 06/18/2004 07:11 PM

I have four gmail invites left. The first four people to leave a comment with their email address can have them (put it in the email field and fill in a URL as well if you're worried about spam harvesters - the email won't be displayed but I'll still have access to it). No random gift or good deed necessary - consider it a "thank you" for reading.

In related news, Adrian's Python gmail export script is really rather neat.

Update: They all went in under 15 minutes! To avoid being bombarded with requests, I'll state now that I have no plans of handing out any more in this manner. Still, it was a fun way of drawing some of the lurkers out of hiding.

I have some Gmail Invites to give away

I have some Gmail Invites to give away 06/20/2004 10:00 PM

Google has given me a number of Gmail invites to give away and I thought I would offer them up here. Being this is a technical site I am looking for technical resources so the person that suggest to me the best resource will get an account. I will give everyone 3 days to come up with suggestions and you are not limited from only commenting once you can put in as many suggestions as you want.

I currently have a pretty huge resource list that I cull information from so you better dig deep.

I'm running out of Gmail invites 04/28/2004 08:15 PM
You'd think I was giving out free money or something. They're not pre-IPO shares, just gmail invites. It's funny. Almost nobody asked me for an account until I mentioned it on a mailing list earlier today. Now I've probably sent out 20 invites in 10 minutes. A few smart cookies assumed I had some invites stashed away when I first talked of spamming my gmail account (thanks for all the "spam", btw). I purposely didn't mention invites because I wanted...

Gmail Invites Up For Sale On eBay

Gmail Invites Up For Sale On eBay 04/30/2004 02:47 PM
Google is now letting those who are already signed up for their Gmail service invite two new people to the service, and as you might imagine, this limited supply of a service in high demand has already meant that plenty of invites are showing up on eBay, and people are trying to charge an awful lot for them. Honestly, anyone who buys this invite has to be something of a sucker. With the invites getting easier and easier to come by, any amount spent is probably too much.

Google changes policy on Gmail Invites

Google changes policy on Gmail Invites 07/02/2004 03:08 AM

Apparently Google is not real happy with the way some people have been selling and swapping Gmail invites. Specifically banning sales and swaps. That being said the third round Gmail Invite contest I was going to have is not going to be held. Instead as I have invites available I will reward people that I feel ad value to the sites through good commenting. The wording of the changes in policy do not specifically ban the type of contest we where having but I do not want to jeopardize my account and any that we have given out. [ZDNet]

Gmail invites exchange for acts of good

Gmail invites exchange for acts of good 06/08/2004 02:35 AM

People have been auctioning Google gmail invitations on eBay. Jonas has set up a gmail invitation exchange for people who donate invitations and for people willing to do something "good" in exchange for an invite.

Jonas
It's not free, however. If you're interested in one, comment here and let me know what you're willing to do for it. Not to me (though I am more than ready to trade for a few good massages), but to someone else. A random act of kindness, maybe? Work in a soup kitchen? Help out at a needle exchange? Or maybe you're doing that already - you'd be the ideal recipient.

I keep reading about how morale is very low in Iraq and Afghanistan, and how men and women in both theaters are having their tours extended long beyond when they expected to come home. Thankfully, many of our soldiers are able to stay in touch with friends and family via the Internet . . . which brings me to the point of this post.

WWdN reader Drew sent me the following note earlier today:
I will send you an invitation for the hard to get Gmail if you post something on your site telling others to give their invites to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. See, Google gives 1 gig of email space, perfect for movies and pictures from home, but it's invite only. When you get an account you will get invites too, and if you could pass them along to those who need em that would rule.

I think this is a fantastic idea, and an easy, but very powerful way for many of us to help support our troops. GMail gives users 1 GIG of free storage space, which is more than enough for pictures, movies, sound files . . . all sorts of things that could help our servicemen and women feel a little closer to home.

The thing about GMail is that it's currently invite-only, so I e-mailed Drew back, and asked him if he had some sort of clearinghouse set up for soldiers to submit requests for invites. He responded:
No, but about 10 of us are trolling www.gmailswap.com looking for folks in the military. See, once you talk to one of them, they pass an email along to fellows stationed with them, so we're just trying to dole them out as we get the request.

There's no way to know how long Gmail will be invite only, but SGT Tim Knowles in Afghanistan said that good morale is hard to come by out there and in Iraq, and the guys are buzzing about the possibilities of 1 gig. They all seem to have hotmail and well it's weak.

I'm going to look into getting a site together or at least a list.

Of course, there are epic assholes online who will pose as soldiers so they can get invites, but I think it's completely worth the risk.

So here is your challenge, WWdN readers: go forth, and seek out soldiers who could use GMail invites. Help spread the word about this effort, and keep checking back here for a link to the soon-to-be-built clearinghouse for requests. If you're a designer, and you would like to donate some time, or a host who would like to donate some space and / or bandwidth, send me an e-mail and I'll pass it along to Drew. If you're a reporter, maybe you'd like to do a story about a bunch of nerds who are working to do something cool to support our troops. If you're a Google employee, maybe you'd like to come up with a way to ensure that members of the armed services can get GMail acocunts, no matter what. If you're a fellow blogger, you can link this post, or the clearinghouse website when it goes live.

And of course, if you're a GMail account-holder, you can use those invites that are piling up (I've sent out six in the last week) to do something really cool for some people who are making an incredible sacrifice right now.

When we first heard that people were actually paying good money to get themselves a soon-to-be-free Gmail account, we couldn't believe it. Who would pay for a free email account? Apparently, the answer is a lot of people. Either way, this week Gmail started giving out plenty of new invites, which has fl ooded the market and devalued the price. Still, it makes you wonder how those who spent hundreds of dollars on a simple email account feel now. Either way, it appears that Google is now a big fan of the "velvet rope" method of building buzz. Having set up both Orkut and Gmail with the "invite only" method of getting in, they've made them seem even more appealing. It won't be long before every other company tries the same sort of thing - though, it probably won't work nearly as well.

Anti-Gmail Bill Now Allows Gmail

Anti-Gmail Bill Now Allows Gmail 05/26/2004 01:35 PM
Last month there was a lot of talk about the somewhat clueless move by a California politician to create a law that would ban Google's Gmail offering, despite the fact that it was completely optional to use. It appears that enough people (probably including those at Google itself) sat down with State Senator Liz Figueroa to explain how email works, and have convinced her to tone down the bill so that it now allows Gmail. That's right, the anti-Gmail bill now has loopholes that specifically allow Gmail. In other words, Senator Figueroa seems to have realized just how pointless the bill was in the first place and is trying to save face by adjusting it so that it still seems to have a purpose: banning a bunch of things that no one was doing, like having humans read the content of your emails to put in advertising.
