Treasure hunter 12/22/2004 01:30 AM
David Pescovitz: In the December issue of my favorite print magazine Smithsonian, my old friend/Wired editor Michael Behar has a great article about Robert Graf, a treasure hunter seeking a centuries-old pirate's booty. The multimillion-dollar treasure might be hidden in a stone vault now underwater in the Seychelles. Then again, it might not be.
When I arrive on Mahé, it's easy to spot Graf in the crowd at the airport. He's the only guy wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the classic pirate ensign—a skull and crossbones. Tanned and fit, the treasure hunter seems relaxed—hardly what you'd expect from someone who has spent a third of his life obsessed with a long-dead pirate. Yet Graf is no laid-back islander. He's in-your-face intense right from the start. I'd barely heaved my suitcase into the trunk of his rusty compact car when he launched into a breathless retelling of how he'd voyaged some 10,000 miles from his Colorado home, married a Seychellois hotel reservations manager and spent more than $450,000 of his own money looking for a treasure that others have failed to find here for nearly a century.

Two to Beam Up

Two to Beam Up 06/17/2004 04:10 PM

Remember a few months back when photons were successfully teleported? Well, they've done it with atoms now.

In quantum teleportation, the sender, normally called Alice, instantaneously transfers information about the quantum state of a particle to a receiver called Bob. The uncertainty principle means that Alice cannot know the exact state of her particle. However, another feature of quantum mechanics called "entanglement" means that she can teleport the state to Bob.

I'm not real sure what all that means, but I'm sure that soon they'll be able to do this with multiple atoms at the same time. I think we've all seen "The Fly" enough times to understand how many ways this technology can go wrong. If they're going to start building Star Trek contraptions, let's start with a holodeck. Wouldn't you rather your garage looked like the moon than risk a trip to the moon in a teleporter.

Beam me up, mini

Beam me up, mini 09/25/2004 11:37 AM
About three weeks after I first moved into my Rhode Island apartment, I found myself struggling through my first blackout. With most of my belongings still in boxes, I was forced to navigate my still-unfamiliar surroundings with the only light I could find — the backlight on my iPod. That being said Griffin Technology, creators of some of the coolest accessories ever to grace an Apple product — or desktop — have announced a whole new iPod accessory, one that adds nothing to the musical value of the iPod, or its aesthetic appeal, or its recording capabilities. Quite simply, this new iPod add-on turns the iPod or iPod mini into a flashlight (or a laser pointer). Called <A HREF="http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/ibeam/">i Beam</A>, the snap-on flashlight “is great for finding keys in the dark. The other half of the package is a class IIIA laser pointer, handy for iPod-friendly presentations and other, less professional pursuits. Both units come with a snap-on protective cap that can be attached to any keychain for convenient portability and accessibility.” Which, of course, lends itself to the age-old question: What will they think of next?

Beam of Pain

Beam of Pain 06/07/2004 10:56 AM
A roundup of new weapon technologies in this Sacramento Bee piece:
Test subjects can't see the invisible beam from the Pentagon's new, Star Trek-like weapon, but no one has withstood the pain it produces for more than three seconds. People who volunteered to stand in front of the directed energy beam say they felt as if they were on fire. When they stepped aside, the pain disappeared instantly.

The long-range column of millimeter-wave energy is known as the "Active Denial System" for its ability to prevent an aggressor from advancing. Senior military officials, who plan to deliver the device for troop evaluation this fall, say years of testing has produced no sign it will lead to health effects beyond perhaps causing skin to temporarily redden.(...)

But in an era of secret interrogations of al-Qaida suspects and revelations of U.S. abuse of prisoners at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison, Executive Director Doug Johnson of the Minneapolis-based Center for Torture Victims is skeptical. "It seems fundamentally a weapon that's designed to create a great deal of pain and fear," Johnson said. "The concern I would have is ... once this kind of technology is available and there's a perception that it's safe and nonlethal, it seems like a natural device to be used in interrogations.

Need lots of distractions to quell those raucous kids fidgeting in the back seat of your minivan on the way to Grandma's house? Well, there may be some help on the horizon, now that Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. says it will add video transmissions to its U.S. pay-radio system in 2006. In another splash of technology convergence that is seeing the boundaries melt between all forms of electronic communications, Sirius said yesterday that in the second half of 2006 it will add two or three channels of video content to the lineup of about 120 channels of digital music, talk and information that it already beams by satellite to more than one million subscribers in the United States.

For the last five years, TiVo and ReplayTV have enabled users to digitally record television shows. Some users - those who like to keep their favorite shows around - have gotten around this by copying them to VCR's or DVD recorders.

BoingBoing pal Roland Piquepaille says:
The nanotechnology research field is pretty fertile these days. Researchers at Harvard recently showed a nanowire which could be the next big diagnostic tool for doctors. Meanwhile, University of Southern California scientists have developed a 'nanosensor' that only works when noise is added. And another Harvard team has developed nanoscale fibers that are thinner than the wavelengths of light they carry which may have applications in ever-shrinking medical products and tiny photonics equipment such as nanoscale laser systems, tools for communications and sensors. This news roundup contains more details and references about these projects. You'll also find a stunning picture of a s ilica nanowire wrapping a beam of light around a strand of human hair.

If you think video games are engrossing now, just wait: PlayStation maker Sony Corp. has been granted a patent for beaming sensory information directly into the brain.

The technique could one day be used to create video games in which you can smell, taste, and touch, or to help people who are blind or deaf. The U.S. patent, granted to Sony researcher Thomas Dawson, describes a technique for aiming ultrasonic pulses at specific areas of the brain to induce "sensory experiences" such as smells, sounds and images.

You know how sometimes you think up a gadget but you figure that no one will ever build it? Well, the Omnifi is one of those gadgets, except that it's real. The Omnifi is a digital media player for your car with a 20GB hard drive and an 802.11b WiFi attachment which actually makes it possible (assuming your car is within range) to wirelessly beam your music directly to your car from your PC. You can also set it to automatically transmit all sorts of information to your car, like the weather, news, etc. The hard drive can also detach and be connected to a PC (sorta like the Phatnoise system) if your car is parked too far away for WiFi. Fist of Fleury

Fist of Fleury 05/23/2004 04:52 AM

Looks like Marc Fleury, JBoss boss and a world class bacon (?!?), is on the grill again.  He is being accused of praising JBoss and trashing competitors anonymously at well known Java websites like TheServerSide.  What a character he is.  I wouldn't be surprised if he makes an appearance in the next Tarantino movie.

Revisit Funnyside of Open Source for a classic taste of Fleury.

Update:

BileBlog had all the juicy bits on this story which surfaced when TheServerSide forum added a feature that lookups posts by IP address.  Ouch!  It looks like rest of the JBoss gang is into masquerading as well.  I even recognize some of the supposedly bogus characters (underlined):

... Marc Fleury. Who else does the slimy little fleury have hidden away in this too-large-for-one-person personality of his? Why, none other than our friend Arun Patel! Arun, for those of you unfamiliar with TSS, posts incredibly offensive polemics that happen to exactly mirror the unspoken thoughts of a certain JBoss cult. ...

So, who else posts from that IP? Well, we have James Hardy. James' posts are often of the 'I'm sane but lets face it, JBoss rule' variety, as opposed to another on that list of deranged psychopaths, Chip Tyler. Chippie here will eagerly pipe in in any number of threads to say how much CDN suck, as well as how every move JBoss makes is intelligent and wise. There are literally dozens of other accounts that show how widespread this behaviour is. The only thing they have in common is a surprising love and admiration for all things JBossy, and disdain and abuse for all things non-JBossy.

Needless to say, Ben Sabrin and the majority of the JBoss folks are all on the trail too. So while it's impossible to actually draw lines between the fakes and their puppetmasters, it's very very easy to spot the group of nefarious rumprangers who have embarked on this laughably incompetent marketing exercise. Having said that, some of the linkages are very clear and easy to follow to individuals who happen to not work in the same turdfactory as the fleurys do. Bill Burke has the highly dubious honour of also being Joe Murray, famous for making noises to the effect of 'Mike Spille doesn't exist!'. Let's see you uuhmm and err your way out of this one Billy! Marc'll have you back in that gimp suit pretty sharpish if you keep being this sloppy.

The saddest part about all this is that the most likely outcome is for these posters to now ensure they use a different IP when posting, to disguise the trail more effectively. I'm sure the very notion of 'gosh, maybe we should let our software do the talking instead of using underhanded tactics like these' is heretical in that camp.
