12/24/2004 12:16 PM There's a teaser trailer out for the Hitchhikers Guide movie. It's
unclear if the drooling should begin or if it's mere blasphemy. The
teaser isn't enough to make me drool. If you have an iPod, then The
Complete Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy from BBC can't be recommended
enough. (The MP3 version is getting bad reviews for sound quality, but
I can't find the "regular audio CD" set...) There's also a new trailer
for Dark Water. It's a remake...

Five Years In Jail For Putting A Movie
Online
11/12/2003 09:04 PMThe latest Hollywood friendly law to be proposed by some Senators who
have strong Hollywood financial backing would
make it a felony to take a video camera into a movie theater or to
put a film up on the internet, with penalties including up to five
years in jail. Of course, we already have copyright law that covers
this particular crime, but that's not enough for folks in Hollywood
who seem to believe that the more you criminalize, the more people
will want to pay you. Now, clearly, videotaping a film in the theater
or putting it on the internet is illegal. But, I don't see how it
requires a new law, or how anyone could possibly justify
five
years in prison for the action. The bill won't go anywhere as
it's being introduced just as the session is ending, but it is likely
to show up again next year. It will be interesting to see what
happens when video cameras on mobile phones become more common. Will
people be prevented from taking their phones into the theater as well?
If someone wants to record a brief clip to send to a friend (which
could be seen as
promoting the film) will they get tossed in
jail?

04/11/2004 10:36 AMIn 1882, astronomer David Peck Todd shot 147 consecutive plates of the
transit of Venus across the night sky. Now, two modern astronomers at
the Lick Observatory have scanned them and turned them into a
Quicktime movie -- a film "shot" years before Edison made his first
moving picture. This makes me wonder if we'll be able to pull off neat
tricks like imrpovising stereoscopic, moving, and/or panoramic images
of the present at some time in the future, say by pulling thousands of
moblogged images of a single event off the net and using software to
interpolate and assemble them.
Spurred by a reference in one of Todd's letters in Lick's Mary Lea
Shane Archives, Bill Sheehan and I found all 147 negatives, still in
good condition, at the observatory. To our knowledge, this collection
of photos constitutes the most complete surviving record of a
historical transit of Venus.
As we looked at Todd's extensive sequence of images, we realized we
could turn them into a movie. A similar thought may have occurred to
Todd himself, for a number of his contemporaries were already making
the first forays into chronophotography — the recording of
sequential motion and the forerunner of cinematography. Indeed, Pierre
Jules Janssen invented his famous photographic revolver to capture the
1874 transit of Venus.

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
03/22/2005 05:03 PMYesterday we noted that the MPAA and movie theater owners were
whini
ng about how much people coming in an taping movies was hurting
their business. The obvious response, we pointed out, is to recognize
that going to the movies is a
social experience. It's not just
about the content (though, that is important), but the overall
experience. If they improved that, then people would want to go --
even if they could score the same movie off the internet or a cheap
DVD bought off the street. While the folks in Hollywood refuse to
entertain this idea, someone (anonymously) in the comments to that
story pointed to an article in China noting that
this is exactly what Chinese movie theaters have done.
After years of declining attendance, they finally shaped up and made
going to the movies cool again. They improved the overall experience,
putting in better equipment and more comfortable seats. They improved
the sound and the lighting as well. It sounds like they also made
some theaters to be more like bars, to help attract young adults away
from traditional bars. Yet the supposedly "creative" movie people in
Hollywood insist "nothing can be done" to get people into the theater.

Journey Through the Galaxy
08/11/2004 05:03 AMJourney Through the Galaxyhttp://home.cwr
u.edu/~sjr16/advanced/index.htmlThis website,
supported by Case Western University, "explores our solar system,
stars, extra-solar planets, the theories about the past and future of
the universe, and human exploration of space." The valuable materials
are provided in two varieties: a regular version designed for grade
school students and an advanced version intended for college students.
The easily navigable website is first divided into five main topics
and subsequently separated into a series of subtopics. For instance,
under the Solar System link users can find five tabs containing data
and tutorials on the sun, planets, asteroids, comets, and the edge of
the solar system. With numerous helpful diagrams and images throughout
the website, astronomy students are sure to benefit from this website.

SAGA.M31 -Galaxy- is a data integration server
that runs inside J2EE-compliant application
servers and provides an independent data access
layer that lets you create a Web service in 15
minutes. It provides access to JDBC, LDAP, and
3270 Mainframe transactions. Information from
these sources can be embedded in an information
container that provides the interface to
applications. An Eclipse plugin that makes it easy
for developers to integrate the information
containers into their applications is provided.
