Neowin Talks Security with Microsoft

Neowin Talks Security with Microsoft

Neowin Talks Security with Microsoft 02/07/2005 02:10 AM

With the recently released Service Pack 2 for Windows XP we at Neowin wanted to know more about Microsoft's security commitments to their customers.

We recently had the chance to ask Microsoft a few questions on the subject of how successful Windows XP SP2 has been and the future of security improvements.

Here's a snip:

Q: How is NGSCB progressing and will it be a part of Longhorn?

A: We are evolving NGSCB in a direction that we believe will provide broader value to customers and partners. We are still focused on delivering secure computing technologies (that utilize new hardware) in the Longhorn timeframe. Longhorn is the target for NGSCB. That said, Microsoft wants to make absolutely sure that we are delivering a high quality security product. If we are confident that NGSCB meets and exceeds the quality and security standards that Microsoft has set then we will ship it as part of Longhorn.

Code to Run (831527)
11/13/2003 12:36 AM
A security vulnerability exists in Microsoft Word that could allow malicious code execution. This vulnerability exists due to to the way Word checks the length of a data value (Macro names) embedded in a document. If a specially crafted document were to be opened it could overflow a data value in Word and allow arbitrary code to be executed. If successfully exploited, an attacker could then take the same actions as the user had permissions to carry out, such as adding, changing or deleting data or files, communicating with a web site or formatting the hard drive.

Microsoft Wants to Resume Talks With EU

Microsoft Wants to Resume Talks With EU 12/19/2004 03:11 PM
Software giant Microsoft Corp. hopes an impending court ruling on its five-year antitrust battle with the European Union will bring both sides back to the negotiating table, but EU regulators still balk at resuming direct negotiations, officials said Thursday. The European Court of First Instance is expected to decide by Monday whether to stay pending appeal the EU's March order for Microsoft to change its business practices and pay a 497 million euro ($666 million) fine, lawyers said.

Considering that the full appeal could take years, the consequences of a suspension could be huge. If court President Bo Vesterdorf backs the EU, the U.S.-based software giant would be forced to divulge some of its long-cherished trade secrets to competitors and untie the digital Media Player from its Windows platform. Microsoft will be carefully assessing the legal arguments Vesterdorf gives.

Microsoft (Linux, Symbian) and cajoling
users to get Microsoft products
01/28/2004 01:31 PM
Apparently Microsoft MVPs not only are helping users of Microsoft products, but are also officially bashing Microsoft´s competition: Robert Levy says that Windows Mobile from Microsoft is better than Linux, because operators will earn less money with Linux (and thus forgets one important factor: users don´t like to part with their money very much): Linux is proclaiming "Pick me! I´ll decrease your costs!" while Microsoft is getting right to the heart of the matter by boasting "Pick me! I´ll increase your revenue." One offers to cut the cost of each device by a few dollars. The other offers to increase the amount of money customers pay to their carrier each month by a few dollars. This doesn´t sound like a very difficult decision to me.
