Hot hot hot Pompeii action

Hot hot hot Pompeii action 02/07/2005 02:07 AM

Xeni Jardin: This Der Spiegel story about erotic frescoes from Pompeii reveals that prior to being buried in heaps of ash, Pompeiians were totally whoring it up. Link. Shown here, an oral sex tableau. A pity none of this stuff made it into that Disco very Channel / BBC TV special; the program would have been infinitely more watchable.
(Thanks, Rob). See also this related English-language coverage about the frescoes from 2000 -- the year in which they became part of a public display at a newly restored ancient Roman bath: Link. This Lonely Planet documentary also featured them.

Erotic content in ancient art is hardly news, of course -- Boing Boing reader esben adds, "In the archaeological museum in Naples is the Gabinetto Segreto - the Secret Room. It's full of erotic pictures and statues. The phallus was obiously a big thing in ye olden days. The museum site is down, but here's loads of pictures from the whole collection." Link

And Matthew Krohn says,

Archaeologists have been talking about those frescoes in classes for years... Some of the houses have very well-preserved erotic scenes, as well as some of the villas, in the back rooms. There's even one fresco with a man with a set of scales weighing his... piece. Link. Plus their gardens are crammed full of phalluses just sticking out of the ground. That particular house is the house of a couple of merchants, and it has plenty of other frescoes.

I wasn't going to say anything about the IPO filing by everyone's favorite search company, on the theory that anyone reading this blog has already seen plenty about the news.  But one tidbit caught my eye.

According to Tristan Lewis, Google's S-1 states that about 1/3 of its advertising revenue in the last quarter came from non-Google sites in its network.  In other words, to use the terminology of my Harvard Business Review article, Google is syndicating its targeted advertisements.  Amazon.com was previously my best example, but it was only generating something like 10% of revenues from partner sites that use its technology.  I expect the Google number to increase, since its AdSense program for other sites is still relatively new, and competitive pressures will limit Google's ability to do more straight search engine deals.

FCC Action on VOIP

FCC Action on VOIP 02/12/2004 02:12 PM
Today, the FCC declared Pulver.com's Free World Dialup service an unregulated information service, and launched a proceeding seeking comment on the treatment of voice over IP more broadly.

Chairman Powell said something to the effect that this is the most important proceeding in the history of communications regulation, and he's right.  There has been intense political back-and-forth on these issues behind the scenes, with Congressional leaders and the FBI pushing hard on the FCC.  The Commissioners and the staffers drafting today's items worked through the night to reach compromises.  The meeting was pushed back from 9:30 to 11am and the VOIP items were moved the the end of the agenda, no doubt to allow time for final rewriting.

It is vitally important that the tech community participate in the VOIP proceeding.  The decisions the FCC makes will determine not just how new VOIP providers like Vonage and Packet8 are treated, but the rules of the road for the broadband superhighway.  As I said at the FCC VOIP hearing in December, voice is now an application.  It's one of many applications that will be delivered through interconnected broadband networks.  The FCC's actions will determine the business environment for network operators, application providers, and content creators.  This is the whole enchilada.

When the text of the notice is released, we'll know the exact comment deadlines and questions being asked.  FCC proceedings are open to anyone -- you don't have to be a lawyer or a company in the space, and you can file via a Web form.  (One of my proudest accomplishments from my time at the Commission.)

I'll have more thoughts on this issue soon.

This Super Bowl halftime, make it to the Lingere Bowl. American TV hits a new low by inventing another sport along the lines of Foxy Boxing and Hot Oil Wrestling. The gridiron action features Team Dream vs. Team Euphoria (featuring washed-up former NFL players as coaches) in full contact football while wearing skimpy clothing. Even weirder, but there will be cheerleaders to cheerlead the players that are already dolled up to look like cheerleaders in some sort of subtle hot lesbian action. It's all pay-per-view, but this "Girls Gone Football" seems more like a new low than a step forward for real women's sports.

Our Comic Book gallery is updated today with the ongoing series known simply as Star Wars. This series told new stories set in the prequel trilogy era, and featured Jedi Knights Ki-Adi-Mundi and Mace Windu alongside new characters Quinlan Vos, Aayla Secura, A'sharad Hett, the Dark Woman, and Vilmarh Grahrk as they battled against deceit, corruption, and political scheming in the Republic. Also included in our gallery is the rare internet-exclusive Prelude to Rebellion #0 and a gallery for the trade paperback collections.

Japanese fan-made game: Ie, Tatemasu! 01/05/2005 07:09 PM
Xeni Jardin: On the terrific, offbeat videogame website "Insert Credit," we find this cultural exegesis of a Japanese gay porn video game. Screenshots included, and they're relatively worksafe because the... um... protuberances... are blocked with pics of cute anime girls. Cute anime girls with third eyes, that is. Snip:
The game I am about to pick as my "Game of the Year 2004" is called Ie, Tatemasu! ("let’s build your house!", as they say on the guide book); it’s a fan-made erotic game. And the most basic type, too: a simulation game. For those of you not familiar with the genre, you basically see the character you’re supposed to be talking to, read the dialogue, and sometimes make a choice (between, for example: "go to the pachinko" or "pay a visit to this character"). Sometimes, when, hum, something visual happens that words would be unfit to describe properly, you are shown a still illustration of the scene while the text still runs down the CG. Basically, these games are very, very slow slideshows of pornographic drawings with a lot of text, and very few interactive elements.

Gunkanjima "Off the westernmost coast of Japan, is an island called "Gunkanjima" that is hardly known even to the Japanese. Long ago, the island was nothing more than a small reef. Then in 1810, the chance discovery of coal drastically changed the fate of this reef. As reclamation began, people came to live here, and through coal mining the reef started to expand continuously. Before long, the reef had grown into an artificial island of one kilometer (three quarters of a mile) in perimeter, with a population of 5300. Eventually, the mines faced an end, and in 1974 the world's once most densely populated island become totally deserted. The island, after all its inhabitants departed leaving behind their belongings, became an empty shell of a city where all its people disappeared overnight, as if by some mysterious act of God.”" Link (Thanks, Philip!)
