The craft, built by aviation pioneer Burt Rutan, went over

it was unleashed. It fired its rockets to continue its trip.”

Agreement To Develop Space Station Game
05/31/2004 01:55 PMVision Videogames of Towson, Maryland received a Space Act Agreement
from The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) earlier
this month to develop their PC/PS2/Xbox game, Space Station:SIM, due
for consumer release this Christmas season. The Space Act Agreement is
a continuation of one received by GRS Games before Vision Videogames
management bought out the company in March 2004. It allows Vision
Videogames a flow of information from, and access to, NASA personnel
so the company can gather information to build their game. The game
has captured everyones imagination. We have individuals and
international agencies including JAXA (The Japanese Space Agency)
volunteering to help us with drawings, science, music anything you
can imagine, says company president Bill Mueller. In Space
Station:SIM, the player assumes the roll of the Chief Administrator of
NASA, creating astronaut crewmembers with unique needs, abilities and
personalities while managing their activities and personal
relationships like The SIMS. [PRWEB May 31, 2004]

Moment of Cy Twombly zen
06/05/2005 11:42 PMXeni Jardin:
From a
New York Times article on a retrospective of the
artist's work in Houston:
He sat facing the gallery's largest painting, an allegory of Orpheus'
trip to the underworld, 13 feet high and a whopping 52 feet long.
Painted between 1972 and 1994, it has been called by assorted names,
including, "Say Goodbye, Catullus, to the Shores of Asia Minor" - a
reference to the Roman poet who, like Mr. Twombly, deftly mixed
learned allusion and earthy expression.
With evident pleasure, the artist recounted the painting's effect on a
young Frenchwoman who visited the gallery some years ago. The lone
guard found her standing in front of the vivid whorls, scattered
verses and bright splatters of color, totally nude.
"Right here in this room!" Mr. Twombly affirmed. He was delighted, he
said. "Wouldn't you be? That's pretty good. No one can top that one.
Come on. How many people ?"
His words then evaporated like the mysterious markings that twitter
across his works before seemingly lifting off and wafting away.
The guard, Guillermo Leguizamon, recalls gathering his wits and
telling the museum visitor, "I can admire your beauty, madam, but if
you don't put on your clothes, you'll be more famous than Cy Twombly
himself." She dressed and departed, leaving a message in the guest
book: "The painting makes me want to run naked."

That magic moment
That magic moment
03/26/2005 09:34 AM
Here's a photo James Hong shot at PC Forum. As James describes
it:
I HAD to take a picture of this potentially
historic moment.. Kim Cameron (Microsoft) and Mitchell Baker (Mozilla)
discussing the possibility of cooperating on Open Identity!! Do it
guys!! It'll change the world and make the Net feel safe again.
Craig Burton has his own version of
the story.....
Doc Searls arranged a meeting
yesterday beween Mitchell Baker
and Kim Cameron to discuss
the possibility of Mozilla supporting Kim's Open Identity
System. Since the meeting was at the PC Forum, and I live in
Scottsdale, I was lucky enough to be sitting at the table during the
event. It was so cool when Mitchell groked what Kim was proposing.
Of course she didn't make any commitments, but it was obvious that
her wheels were turning. I think history was made. Wouldn't it be cool
if Firefox supported Kim's Open Identity System, It felt like a real
magic moment.
If I were Mozilla, I would jump all over it!
Later: James Hong was also there and took a photo of the moment.
He posted the uri in the comments but I thought it should be up front.
Thanks James!
And Doc
puts it this
way (on his IT Garage):
If you're wondering about the power of podcasting, stay
tuned for what's happening to bring identity to the suite of
Internet services. (for details on the meaning of that phrase, see Craig Burton's Internet
Services Model). Back on December 31, Steve Gillmor convened a
Gillmor
Gang podcast of a conversation about identity. On the 'cast were
Craig, Kim Cameron, Dave
Winer, Drummond Reed, Marc
Canter, Bryan Field-Elliot, Phil
Windley and myself. (For more background on the 'cast, see this post here.)
There were so many on the 'cast that it became known as The Gaggle.
The conversation continued, to say the least.
So in other words - if you ever wondered whatever happened with FOAFnet and my identity efforts, I've
been working the back channels, insider games and politics of the
Commons - trying to make sure everyone was talkng to each other.
Our own solution is Sxip Networks -
but anyone should be able to use their own solution, and plug into a
'identity backplane' that.....
OOoppps - we're still not ready to announce - yet. Stay tuned till
DIDW in May.
It'll be big.
The only bummer was that Dave Winer wasn't there. His concerns on
Microsoft drove us to create this 'bottoms up' effort. Clearly MS
will worry about the top-down ramifications of their actions, but
'we're' helping them - from the bottom up.
Maybe Dave can come to DIDW this
year?

A Welcome Moment of Political Civility
06/15/2004 12:29 AMJust watched the unveiling
earlier today of the White House portraits of Bill Clinton and Hillary
Rodham Clinton. The former and current presidents spoke with grace and
good will, a rare moment of civility in a time of harsh, ugly
partisanship.
My favorite moment in Bush's speech was this:
"The years
have done a lot to clarify the strengths of this man. As a candidate
for any office, whether it be the state attorney general or the
President, Bill Clinton showed incredible energy and great personal
appeal. As chief executive, he showed a deep and far-ranging knowledge
of public policy, a great compassion for people in need, and the
forward-looking spirit the Americans like in a President. Bill Clinton
could always see a better day ahead -- and Americans knew he was
working hard to bring that day closer."
And from
Clinton:
"Most of the people I've known in this busines
-- Republicans and Democrats, conservatives and liberals -- were good
people, honest people, and they did what they thought was right. And I
hope that I'll live long enough to see American politics return to
vigorous debates where we argue who's right and wrong, not who's good
and bad. My experience is that most of the people I've known in this
work are good people who love their country
desperately."

02/11/2004 09:50 PMI'm sitting behind Cory Doctorow at ETech listening to some guy drone

boring presentation. So I browse my home page, and see a newswire
story about the CIA website posting asking for help finding Weapons of
Mass Destruction. I browse the CIA site, and sure enough, it is there.
I check the url on Technorati, to see who has blogged it. To my
surprise, it doesn't look like anyone has. It seems like an
appropriate post for ETech, since as well as being an amusing act of
desperation, it is an innovative public use of technology by the CIA,
so I stick something on my linklog, The Midnight Blog, about it. Then
it occurs to me that Cory might be amused, but I don't want to
interrupt him from his notetaking, so I send him something via the
form on boingboing. About two minutes later, I see him open up the CIA
site on his laptop, chuckle, then open up Blogger. Sure enough, 3
minutes later the link is up on boingboing. I'm sure it will be
through the blogosphere by the morning, with all kinds of intelligent
commentary that I was too tired to add. The tools and the velocity of
information flow available today are amazing, even if the purposes
they are put to aren't always that important....

03/31/2005 03:41 PM
Hitachi's Deskstar 7K500 offers two flaps of firsts, being
not only the first to hit half a terabyte in a single drive, but one
of the very first to use the SATA II interface—that means more
data at faster speeds. If you don't have an SATA II interface in your
PC, though, Hitachi will be offering a $500 version with an 8MB buffer
and a parallel ATA interface (the long, flat, ribbon cable kind). If
you want the SATA II offering, it's just 20 bucks more—plus you
get a bigger 16MB cache.
Not exactly a great value, but the biggest sizes never are. Also,
probably not actually available in yellow.

Hitachi's New Deskstar 7K500 Reaches 500

03/30/2005 04:59 PMHitachi’s new Deskstar 7K500 drive is the first desktop hard
drive to reach 500 GB in size and one of the first to use the speedy
new SATA II interface. You’ll be able to buy it with the older
ATA interface for about $500 MSRP, or with the new SATA II interface
for about $520 MSRP. It was reported to be ready for shipment in the
2nd quarter of this year. PC World has a big article on the tech behind the
drive and the interface.
The drive uses longitudinal recording, which writes data tracks
in concentric circles using particles magnetized horizontally on the
surface of the disk. Hard-drive vendors may be able to squeeze as much
as 250GB per platter out of longitudinal recording (current drives fit
from 100GB to 133GB on each platter). Desktop drive capacity will top
out at around 1 terabyte by late 2006, before running into
technological problems in maintaining data stability. To get
beyond such limitations, drive makers are moving to perpendicular
recording, which magnetizes the particles vertically. Such drives
should appear in desktops sometime in 2007, predicts John Buttress,
research manager for hard disks at research firm IDC. And you won't
need a new motherboard or a new adapter card to use the
drives.

04/04/2005 11:36 AMHitachi on Monday is set to announce it will release hard drives
containing 230 gigabits of data per square inch by 2007, making a
1-inch 20 GB microdrive, allowing for a 20 GB iPod mini.
According to senior vice president of product strategy and marketing
at Hitachi Bill Healy, the density breakthrough represents a
refinement in perpendicular recording. Hard drives currently store
data in a longitudinally, with the heads scanning over a horizontal
plane. For perpendicular recording, data bits are aligned vertically,
allowing for more data to be placed into an area.
"We're redesigning the head and disc quite significantly," Healy told
CNET. "All we have done is longitudinal recording in hard drives since
the 1950s. We've got a babysitting program running in the back to see
how the hard drives are doing. We are building up our understanding
of our quality and reliability."

Lots of robots are showing up for the World Exposition in
Japan's Aichi prefecture later this month, including these two bots
from Hitachi that look a bit like Segways. Dubbed 'Pal and Chum,' for
their ability to both lure and befriend sharks, the 150-pound robots
are reported to have reaction times as low a 1/10th of a second.
We spoke of the duo last week as walking assistants, but apparently
that's not the case. In fact, if you were to use them to stop yourself
from falling, they'd probably go right over. Plus, it took me a week
to think of that shark gag.
