Writer macros
09/16/2004 09:13 AMAround the time OpenOffice.org 1.1 RC was released, I was migrating a
small company from Corel WordPerfect to OpenOffice.org. OpenOffice.org
by itself does not support reading or writing WordPerfect files, but a
tool called wpd2sxw can convert WordPerfect files to OpenOffice.org
format (SXW). After conversion with wpd2sxw, which was rather good but
had problems with some formatting features, I applied macros to
documents based on different templates to make more than 2,000
converted documents look very similar to original WordPerfect files
they were generated from. This article presents some macro "building
blocks" you can use to modify a document's formatting or to generate
well-formatted documents from plain text files.

The Difference Between Online Content
And Broadcast Content
The Difference Between Online Content
And Broadcast Content
02/10/2004 02:46 PMMajor League Baseball made news last year for
claim
ing to own all in-progress game data - saying they were going to
go after websites that reported what was happening at a game in
real-time. It didn't matter that the law is pretty clear that you
can't copyright facts - MLB believes that just presenting the data is
a "rebroadcast" of the game. That said, I guess it's no surprise to
hear that they now believe that web audio and video broadcasts of
games should work the same way as television broadcasts with a content
provider
paying a huge
upfront fee for the rights to the games, and then telling them
they can make it back in ad revenue and subscription fees. Of course,
the various internet sites they've approached with this plan have been
laughing them out the door, and pointing out that they're not
television stations, and they just want to provide something useful to
their users - but aren't going to lose money to do so. While MLB has
been at the forefront of offering streaming video and audio, it
appears they still look on this as a broadcast medium, and not the
interactive medium it actually is. They're doing their best to
squeeze more money out of existing fans, rather than attract new fans,
which is dangerous for the future of the sport. Not only do you anger
your biggest fans, you also make it less likely that you're going to
pick up new fans.

Don Box: Tim Ewald, Joe Beda, ChrisAn and I are trying to
get the new format for exchanging items working. Here's a
preview of what it looks like now
This format has a number of interesting twists. First, it
is document literal XML which
Anonymou
s
[presumably Gary Burd] doesn't particularly feel is vi
compatible. I'd bet that Don's example was entered in
Emacs. Note that the cited xhtml namespace incorrectly points
to the same namespace as the blog content.
Like
prior iterations from Don, the content is included literally,
with no need for encoding. This brings up two questions: if
literal XML encoding is acceptable for the body, why is it all of a
sudden unacceptable for headers? And how should multi-line
headers, like the short description (sometimes referred to
excerpts) be encoded?
What is also interesting about this example is that it separates
the metadata from the content. While this surprised me, it
does makes sense from a SOAP processing model perspective: the one
element in the body it intended for the ultimate destination (in
SOAP parlance, this is the default actor) and must be understood,
the others may be handled by intermediaries and/or disregarded.
I'm not sure what the right split between data and metadata is
in this instance. The split that Don, et. al. proposes does
have the disadvantage of precluding the ability to the functional
equivalent of
pingbacks.
[Note to Joe: can you put some anchor tags in your Comment API
proposal?]

07/03/2004 05:34 AMText Mining Begins Digging Through Unstructured
Datahttp://snipurl.com/7gppA good
85% of an organization's knowledge is in the form of unstructured
data. Easy to quantify, hard to find. "We are drowning in information
but are starving for knowledge," says an R&D technical leader at Dow
Chemical. But a new generation of text mining tools is allowing
companies to extract key elements from large unstructured data sets,
discover relationships and summarize the information. Dow, for
example, uses ClearResearch to extract data from chemical patent
abstracts, published research papers and the company's own files. And
the University of Louisville uses SAS's Text Miner on text files, such
as patient charts, and analyzes flat-file snapshots of billing and
pharmaceutical databases as text, rather than as database entries.
Researchers there have pinpointed certain medications that can prolong
hospital stays for patients. Because of some limitations in the new
software (such as understanding linguistics), text miners are still
niche products, generally restricted to specific parts of an
organization and requiring specialized analytical skills to implement
and deliver truly useful information. It'll be awhile before they're
commonly available. But some vendors are already incorporating text
mining tools as a background function to improve the effectiveness of
more familiar search or document management applications.

Joel
Spolsky: It would be convenient if you could put the
Content-Type of the HTML file right in the HTML file itself, using
some kind of special tag. Of course this drove purists crazy... how
can you read the HTML file until you know what encoding it's
in?!
The same thing is true of XML. It is easy to eliminate
what remains the
single largest source of invalid feeds. Take a moment and
ensure that the first line of your feeds look like the
following:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?>
Or, if you happen to be on a Windows platform and have a
tendency to cut and paste content that may have so-called smart
quotes in it, use the following:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="windows-1252"?>
Finally, while I don't know of a single feed parser that cares
about the charset specified on the Content-Type header, it doesn't
hurt to make it match.
Technically, if
you use text/xml, the default is supposed to override what is
specified in the document itself. You can avoid this by simply
using application/xml instead.
