Job Numbers in an Election Year
Job Numbers in an Election Year
08/10/2004 12:47 PMI'll grant that often you can say anything you want with statistics,
but in
these
letters to the NY Times editor (in response to
this
article), one statistic really stood out:
For the last 54 years, spanning 14 presidential terms and
11 different presidents, six of the top seven job-growth terms were
presided over by Democrats, while Republican presidents were in office
for all seven of the lowest job-growth terms.
Is there a lesson to be learned from this for the working men and
women of America?

Wartime (and Election Year) Polemics
Wartime (and Election Year) Polemics
05/23/2004 12:03 PMFrank Rich (NY Times): Michael Moore's Candid Camera. Of
course, Mr. Moore is being selective in what he chooses to include in
his movie; he's a polemicist, not a journalist. But he implicitly
raises the issue that much of what we've seen elsewhere during this
war, often under the label of "news," has been just as subjectively
edited. Perhaps the most damning sequence in "Fahrenheit 9/11" is the
one showing American troops as they ridicule hooded detainees in a
holding pen near Samara, Iraq, in December 2003. A male soldier
touches the erection of a prisoner lying on a stretcher underneath a
blanket, an intimation of the sexual humiliations that were happening
at Abu Ghraib at that same time. Besides adding further corroboration
to Seymour Hersh's report that the top command has sanctioned a
culture of abuse not confined to a single prison or a single company
or seven guards, this video raises another question: why didn't we see
any of this on American TV before "60 Minutes II"?

Cities try to get needs noticed in
election year (USATODAY.com)
08/11/2004 11:59 AMUSATODAY.com - Many cities are trying to stem job losses and replace
aging roads, bridges and water and sewer systems - and do it while
they're devoting more resources than ever to homeland security. Mayors
of the nation's large and midsize cities say that such concerns have
largely been ignored in the presidential campaign.
