Is Google Any More Than Their Brand?
Is Google Any More Than Their Brand?
05/03/2004 01:45 PMWhile this Wall Street Journal piece mostly focuses on the eventual
limitations that search engines face (the fact that they're not
actually artificial intelligence beings, and thus can't really
"understand" searches) it does make an interesting point at the end,
that in a "blind" taste test, where search results from major search
engines are presented without any context as to which search engine
provided them,
most people couldn't tell the
difference. This, columnist Lee Gomes suggests, means that Google
is nothing more than a successful brand. I'm not so sure. First,
Gomes gives no details about the so-called blind taste test (and, in
fact, it's possible that no such test ever occurred and he's just
assuming what the results would be). Second, simply looking at the
results list isn't what makes or breaks a search engine. It's often
what's found at those links that makes it clear whether the search
engine was useful or not. Also, different search engines have very
different features, and some of those additional features make one
more useful than another. So, while it may be true that there are a
number of good search engines out there (and that Google's results
aren't always the best), such a blind taste test with no details
certainly doesn't prove that Google is just a brand.

Again: Al Qaeda - "The mere mention of al Qaeda conjures
images of an efficient terrorist network guided by a powerful criminal

years to come—whether Osama bin Laden is around to lead them or
not." Foreign Policy, May/June 2004.

03/14/2005 05:40 PMBob Frankston talks about two important Supreme Court cases coming up
— Grokster and Brand X — with an emphasis on the latter.
In Brand X, as I understand it, an ISP sued because it was denied
access to a cable company's broadband lines. At stake is whether cable
companies, granted munipal monopolies or near-monopolies, will be able
to create walled gardens. (Bob provides an excellent set of links so
you can read it about it on your own and correct my
misrepresentation.) Bob notes elsewhere that these cases are
well-timed for discussion at David Isenberg's Freedom2Connect. (I'm

Big Brother Brand Car Insurance
Big Brother Brand Car Insurance
08/18/2004 12:46 AMA British car insurance company is
offering a
pay-as-you-drive policy that includes a black box for transmitting a
driver's mileage data -- which means cheaper insurance rates for
people who don't drive much. There is a similar "black box" policy in
the US, but the driving behavior is stored for review by the driver,
and the driver just gets a discount if he/she chooses to pass the data
onto the insurance company. These policies have been suggested in the
past, but usually are quickly shouted down by a somewhat horrified
public. Still, the insurance companies are trying again. The flip
side to these cheaper policies is that drivers are giving up their
"freedom" to drive a bit recklessly, and it's not too much of a
stretch of the imagination to foresee a point where driving behavior
could be constantly monitored by wireless sensors. As long as these
insurance policies are all voluntary, the companies say no one can
complain about Big Brother, but there's a point at which "voluntary"
doesn't become so voluntary when most insurance carriers offer such a
policy, and those who "voluntarily" opt-out are charged much higher
rates. Either way, "choosing" to break the speed limit could get a
lot more expensive soon.

AT&T Says AT&T Wireless Broke Their

AT&T Says AT&T Wireless Broke Their
Brand
08/06/2004 06:45 PMIt never really made sense when AT&T spun out AT&T Wireless that they
let the mobile company keep the name. It was clearly very confusing
to customers who
still think they're the same company and it
was a clear risk to AT&T's brand -- as well as their ability to offer
their own wireless service at another point in the future. While it
was clear that AT&T was just trying to cash in on the hype around
wireless, the fact that they didn't realize that wireless had to be a
part of their future was a bit scary. Of course, among the many
things that did happen was that AT&T Wireless faltered and did,
indeed, harm the overall AT&T brand name. So, while they're in the
process of (maybe) selling out to Cingular, and AT&T wants the name
back, many are questioning
whether
that's a good idea. AT&T Wireless has such a weak reputation
right now that starting a new mobile phone service under that brand
may be an uphill battle. AT&T is now suggesting that
AT&T Wireless broke their
agreement by screwing up the brand and being so poor at customer
service. Right now, honestly, this looks more like a negotiating ploy
concerning the return of the name, because if the Cingular deal does
go through, then it shouldn't much matter any more if the old AT&T
Wireless can't use the name any more.

Stewart Brand, pro-nuke?
Stewart Brand, pro-nuke?
04/08/2005 12:19 PMDavid Pescovitz:
In the new issue of Technology Review, Whole Earth Catalog founder
Stewart Brand
outlines a surprising new plan for saving the environment, including a
case for going nuclear:
So everything must be done to increase energy efficiency
and decarbonize energy production. Kyoto accords, radical conservation
in energy transmission and use, wind energy, solar energy, passive
solar, hydroelectric energy, biomass, the whole gamut. But add them
all up and it’s still only a fraction of enough. Massive carbon
“sequestration” (extraction) from the atmosphere, perhaps
via biotech, is a widely held hope, but it’s just a hope. The
only technology ready to fill the gap and stop the carbon dioxide
loading of the atmosphere is nuclear power.
Nuclear certainly has problems—accidents, waste storage, high
construction costs, and the possible use of its fuel in weapons. It
also has advantages besides the overwhelming one of being
atmospherically clean. The industry is mature, with a half-century of
experience and ever improved engineering behind it. Problematic early
reactors like the ones at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl can be
supplanted by new, smaller-scale, meltdown-proof reactors like the
ones that use the pebble-bed design. Nuclear power plants are very
high yield, with low-cost fuel. Finally, they offer the best avenue to
a “hydrogen economy,” combining high energy and high heat
in one place for optimal hydrogen generation.
The storage of radioactive waste is a surmountable problem (see
“A New Vision for Nuclear Waste,” December 2004). Many
reactors now have fields of dry-storage casks nearby. Those casks are
transportable. It would be prudent to move them into well-guarded
centralized locations. Many nations address the waste storage problem
by reprocessing their spent fuel, but that has the side effect of
producing material that can be used in weapons. One solution would be
a global supplier of reactor fuel, which takes back spent fuel from
customers around the world for reprocessing. That’s the kind of
idea that can go from “Impractical!” to
“Necessary!” in a season, depending on world
events.
